Old thing I used to do in Minecraft was make sand and gravel unable to fall. Worked like a charm!

One thing to note, hardcore is really easy to cheat. If you die, all you need to do is go to spectator mod, open to Lan to enable cheats, and then change the game mode back to survival using cheats. If your death is really bullshit, most players won't even consider this actual cheating, but anything past that and people will judgmentally glare at you.
