Sincere question: why are you getting rid of the grass in the aviary? Birds like to pick through the grass for insects, grubs, and the like. EDIT: Thank you, everyone, for your input! I'm still hoping to get a definitive answer from Jake or Becky. 😊

Probably since they have a history of pests that have killed some of their birds it is likely to cut down on ticks and lice, along with anything bigger that could be in the grass like snakes and weasels, but I am just speculating
@Pixel__Hearts
@Pixel__Hearts 2 дня назад
I think in a previous video they mentioned that the birds will kill the grass and it will just become mud and they want to avoid the dirt+mud combo with gravel or wood chips
@Straw_.B3rrI-on-claws
@Straw_.B3rrI-on-claws 2 дня назад
They should cut the grass in the aviary but not all the way down, if it's cut the way you normally see around houses then they can still forage since it's more natural
@Pixel__Hearts
@Pixel__Hearts 2 дня назад
@@Straw_.B3rrI-on-claws that makes sense but look at the video, the area the mobile chicken coop was sitting at it was completely mud, the chickens just killed the grass entirely. I think it’ll just be easier to maintain in the long run, rather than having to mow the grass around a bunch of birds

Several comments and questions 1. Watching Becky,❤ running after that trailer coop just shows you that she❤ is the backbone of your whole Homestead.❤ 2. I miss the rooster Johnny Cash. Have you renamed any of your roosters Johnny Cash again? 3. The optimum of security gate issue and possible solution. At my home my security gate had a gap just like your front gates of aviary. What I did was to put the foam covering for pipes which is found in the hardware store. They are sold by I the foot. It has adhesive on one side. Just to attach this to the bottom of gate. Closes that gap permanently.
@2watertight
@2watertight 2 дня назад
To address the gate into aviary a concrete apron under the gate which can be 6 inches wide or a couple of yards. . This will not only stop predators but also stop vehicles wearing tracks making the gaps bigger.
@xcachanillax

Something relatively fast growing and evergreen, if it will grow where you are, is a leyland cypress. I planted quite a few around here before I even thought of having my own flock and they are perfect. My birds jet under them all the time to hide from hawks. After they are established, they grow several feet per year and the low hanging branches provide excellent cover. Anything else with similar traits would work.

Roots of floating plants (duckweed, frogbit, redroot floaters, water lettuce, water hyacinth if an outdoor summer tub) are excellent hiding spots for fry. So is milfoil, hornwort and cabomba.

In zoo aviaries, they use a kind of brush on the bottom of the doors or a rubber flap similar to weatherstripping on a door in your home. The edge makes contact with the surface of the ground and sweeps the ground when it opens and shuts. This protects the small birds from escaping and keeps outer animals out.
@edythemerchant1933
@edythemerchant1933 2 дня назад
You might try burying chain link fence under the ground next to the exterior fence outside. That should slow the predators from digging under the fence. Hurts their paws.

Plants that expose roots to the water are the best for algae control. Exposing submersed foliage is good, too, but nothing beats the power of water hyacinth or water cress to strip nutrients from water. Usually a combination of oxygenators and floating plants with roots in the water is sufficient to combat most algae.

This question is slightly unrelated to the video, im not fully through im about 4 minutes in, how do your mandarin ducks sleep on perches? My ducks perch on my arm sometimes and somehow but i thought ducks couldnt sleep on perches because of their webs on their feet. Edit: also i think you guys should get call ducks or brahmas, or try chicken shows. I dont remember yall having any call ducks or brahmas on the farm or jubilee orpingtons Edit 2: omg this comment is so long- 6:35 but what i do is i take them out if the nesting box a lot, but a friend i met from a chicken show says that putting cold water on their brood patch works too, that way they cant sit on eggs and incubate them.

Here’s my suggestion for keeping predators out: we have had chickens almost 10 years. We ran five foot chain link fencing (aka dog fencing) along the ground around our coop and run. Bent it up and bolted it to the coop. Not sure how you could do that part but… this will stop any digging within five feet. They would have to dig down and up to the doors from five feet away. Not much can do that but an occasional mole. Good luck!
@whitehouseonthehill
@whitehouseonthehill 12 часов назад
We have the aviary fencing in the ground already, that’s not a problem. Just the gates underneath, but we can’t bolt fencing from the ground to the gate or we wouldn’t be able to open the gates.

I don't know how possible it is to do at this point but putting a path of pavers under the doors would keep animals from digging in there. I think you dug a good bit of the fence pieces down already? So that should all be good if you hadn't some form of wire mesh going down about a foot and then going out at a 45 angle another foot-ish towards the outside should keep anything from successfully digging in.
