It's low key adorable how Ted's expression, such as it is, completely changes when Elsa says his name. If they're following the comic book canon, he really only gets annoyed with evil people so she might've been safe. Also, Man Thing plushies would sell.
@@johnstovall7503 That too but in the comics, he mostly burned bad people so it seems like he has some control over it or the writers just contrived it that way to keep him an antihero. He didn't tend to harm innocent people. Unfortunately, they'll probably never show us his time as the Grandmaster's champion on Sakaar since his face is on that tower.
@@johnstovall7503 technically it's negative emotions in general that get his attention. But fear itself is the one motion Man-thing himself can't stand, hence doing everything in his power to dispose of it.
Considering that Man-Thing has a connection to the Nexus of All Realities and that we are in the middle of the Multiverse Saga, that may very well be the case.
It kind of reminds me how Manny was handled in the original Ice Age film, due to not having a visible mouth most of the time they had to work a lot more on his eyes to sell the expression. I also like the detail that his pupils spreading out when he’s angry/feral which reflects the glassy eyed look in the comics, but being more condensed when he’s calm/lucid which makes him seem more human, likely reflecting his origins.
Normally when you take designs from Comics 100%, you risk them looking a little goofy in a grounded world. But I think Teddy gets a pass by virtue of him not being human and debuting in a monster movie style special.
Marvel keeps surprisingly pulling it off, the comic accurate new suit for daredevil, mysterio, & now both Man thing & Werewolf. The new Falcon/Captain America suit didn’t translate well tho imo
I like how they found a way to incorporate him into live action accurately without making him seem to disturbing or uncanny and gave him a unique way to “speak”. The 2005 version looked way too edgy and gruesome to be taken seriously
@@py16667 you could also add Wanda’s Scarlet Witch costume to that list, surprising how one of the first things Elizabeth Olsen was told when she got the job was “forget the comics, you don’t have to wear that stupid crown” only for it to finally show up and look awesome in WandaVision and MOM
Idk if someone who burns you to death just because your sad angry or afraid of them good hearted. I certainly know if I did that I would go to jail and be called a monster and rightfully so. But maybe I'm thinking to much into this.
@@monkeyboimehoimenoi8395 I think you missed the part where the people there were supposed to kill him, with their only motive being that they would be rewarded for doing so and not because he's done anything bad or destructive. Ofcourse Ted would retaliate, he usually minds his own business unless you threaten him or the safety of the area he protects
@@Jjo_Han-wen saying usually implies there are times when he isn't acting that way so idk your point, second the the lore is pretty clear. Any who know fear shall burn at his touch.
The 2005 one is legit scary and creepy as hell, but he's way too slow. & he's more of a villain rather than a misunderstood monster. I prefer the MCU version, he's way more faithful to the comics: less scary and more gentle but can be aggressive when agitated. This special made me realize why Man-Thing is a fan favourite, and it delivered. His future as a hero is definitely bright 😍😍😍
The one from 2005 sucked, I literally can't remember anything from it after watching it so long ago, it was that bad. I will do a review on it one day, once I get a good editing system & such. But will not be looking forward to it. I hope this special means we could see another Werewolf By Night special, & a Man-Thing, Tomb of Dracula, & The Monster of Frankenstein Specials.
I like how they had a mix where he can be scary and a menace to others but he also has a heart for others. I do hope we can see more of his scary side though.
His real name is Ted Salas, a scientist who worked on a version of the super soldier serum, injected himself with it and crashed into a swamp turning him into Man-Thing
@@jesusvelueta3683 Easy, a 50 min special that has less budget than an actual movie has better effects, acting and overall story while a huge big budget Marvel movie thats supposed to be better, has mediocre acting, and lackluster special effects
@@py16667 So we're just throwing out valid reasons out the window then, How is it that Marvels older movies filled CGI look way better than Phase 4 movies such as Thor Ragnorok?
They did a pretty good job in not only adapting this character, but also fitting him into this short film’s central theme of some monsters being people too (which is even more fitting for Ted considering he was actually human once in the comics, possibly still was in this continuity). It’s made all the more interesting that seemingly because of this portrayal of the character, I’ve seen more people refer to him as Ted rather than just Man-Thing (his human name is even in the title of this video). Here’s hoping that if they do another Halloween centered one-shot, it’s about the origins of Man-Thing, as the tragedy of Ted Salas’ transformation leaving him isolated and stripped of his identity could be a perfect contrast to showing him safe and happy with Jack as his one friend in a world he has no place in.
Just, the moment when Elsa says Ted’s name is… *chef’s kiss* Her almost quizzical expression, the face drop from Man-Thing, the still nervous but accepting way Elsa just…goes along with conversing with a creature that could smite her where she stood. It’s goddamn poetry!
Man Thing was a creature that always terrified me as a kid-- like a folklore piece, he warned me of the consequences of being evil and abrasive. Then I grew up, and I saw him in live action. He was the gentle giant who punished those of wicked taste. It was kind of comforting, in that sense and another.
He was bad cgi in the comics too? Oh wait, I forget how many people, especially marvel fans, think we’re in 2004 or something and if the effects exceed spawn then deed done? I don’t understand this mindset
Glad people are not complaining about him behaving different from the comics. I love Ted, hope he appears more often, given Man-Thing's connection to the multiverse
Oh my God I love hw they did Man-thing in this XD one of my most favorite characters in the marvel line up. I hope hasbro makes a marvel legends of him an were wolf by night. For the MCU.
@@mrcritical6751 well that’s just freaking incredible…I didn’t know at all. Figured it was just amazing CGI…oh man So when does Man-Thing and Groot team up?!?
I love how can Ted be a brutal beast or a gentle giant they did an amazing job with him hopefully we will see him and Jack again perhaps in Midnight Suns movie.
Is about time they Man Thing in the MCU last time he was a monster villain in a horror movie under the same name I do hope Man Thing and Werewolf by Night team up again in the future with the Avengers or other monsters superheroes like Blade,Moon Knight,Morbius,Frankenstein's monster, and others.
"Whatsoever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch." To be fair, he's not doing it on purpose, it's just a fact. He can't shut it off. I like this version better than the usual portrayal of the Man-Thing in the comics, where he's almost always portrayed as driven purely by instinct, with no real memory of ever having been Ted Sallis. In this version, there's seemingly some (perhaps childlike) fragment of Ted still in there. He responds to his human name, understand the things other people say to him (mostly) and seems to be capable of forming friendships and remembering interactions. It makes for a more nuanced character. Comics Man-Thing is usually more of a force of nature than a person with a character arc.
never read the comic book of "Werewolf at Night, " but along with Moon Knight, i really enjoyed these two Marvel works even more so for having no pre-knowledge or expectation about them. the cinematography and production design for Werewolf at Night were also top notch. I kinda hope Marvel might consider doing more of these under one-hour-length movies. too many series end up padding themselves to fill programming requirements.
Despite being a short film, Werewolf By Night is better than a lot of the recent MCU films. I especially loved Man-Thing (Ted). I hope they continue exploring the dark side of the MCU by featuring other Macbre anti-heroes and villains such as Ghost Rider, Blade, Manphibian, N'kantu, Elsa Bloodstone, Satana, Shuma-Gorath (the tentacle cyclops in Doctor Strange and the Multi-verse of Maddness was actually an obscure kaiju known as Gargantos), and Morbius (loophole is that he isn't played by Jarred Leto. Therefore, it's a different and more proper version of the character).
I been looking forward to seeing how Man Thing would look and he did not disappoint, ever since thor ragnarok I always wondered where he was and he looks amazing more I want to see more of Man Thing
Reason why Man Thing is called Ted is because it was a scientist called Ted Salas who worked on a version of the super soldier serum and have injected it on himself but he crashed into a swamp and become that
I did not expect to see him in the MCU. They’ve done an amazing job. I wish there was more stuff like Werewolf by Night instead of…whatever it is Marvel does nowadays.
Can we appreciate just how fucking violent him grabbing and melting people is in presentation? Like it would have been easy to just make an effect of people turning into ash, or catching on fire, or melting into goo. But no they really went for it, he grabs them with hulk-like force and they immediately burst into flame(not catch alight, burst) on contact THEN start burning and writhing in pain. I mean 1:52 like wow.
As a long term M-T fan, I like what they did here. It's all too easy for him to become a two-dimensional tool used by the writers, or other characters in the story, to kill at necessary points in the story, a bit like a mummy arriving and doing the killing in horror films. As such, he can be almost an absence of character - an emotional reactor to events only. In this story, by giving him the ability to understand friendship and loyalty, it gives him a little more rounded humanity, makes him seem more real, and even allows for humour. A TV series or a film with the character portrayed in this style would be a must-see for me. :-)
He looked phenomenal, both design and execution. In the black and white scenes he sometimes looked a little artificial, but not enough to be distracting. In that full-color ending scene tho he legit looked real, you can almost smell rotting wood and swamp grass through the screen lol
Man-Thing/ Ted Sallis was a failed scientist devolved from his attempt to recreate the Super Soldier formula, a bit more expressive than comics. His late wife was an AIM spy who was killed in Iron Man 3
