When I was first introduced to the movie, I felt bad for Mandy, like, everyone just liked her superficialy, but it didn't seem like anyone wanted to REALLY know her. I thought she was alone and I felt sad for her. But then I got to the ending and I was SHOCKED
@@jack_rabbit seriously.. the way Amber Heard was casted as the pretty manipulative psycho is crazy accurate. Also the fact that Amber called her character "vigilante. hero for bullied kids", should be a sign something is seriously wrong with her.
I love how timeless this movie feels. The fact that it was shot in 2006 and released in 2013, but looks like it could have been filmed in any year between the actual filming and release year. But also paying tribute to 70s/80s slashers with the cinematography and editing. And even today in 2024, there's really not a lot that screams "this is so 2006".
The clothes, makeup and hair scream it to me. I was sixteen in 2006 when this movie was made. I felt like this was a mid 2000s time capsule to a t but make it indie.
No it very much looks like 2006. The way it’s shot, the fashion, the music, the dialogue, etc. That’s something I love about the movie it’s so nostalgic
The reason the release was delayed so much was because it was way too ahead of its time, also the two main characters attempt to kill themselves near the end (but they change their minds)
I love how the other girls around Mandy look like the It Girl of the time, sleek hair, make-up, accessories, dresses... the entire palette; only Mandy has "beach wave". hair, no or little makeup, no jewelry, and clothes mostly in light colors and simple clothing. As if she was not on the same planet with the others and didn't need to be.
I started the video without having seen the movie. After watching it, I don't believe Mandy views Garth as her equal. From the beginning, it's clear she would never follow through with the pact with Emmet. She perceived him as weak and pathetic, likely aware he was spying on her, given that he views her like everyone else. Mandy Lane is a narcissistic sociopath who manipulated Emmet as her tool. The satisfaction on her face when she declares, "We should only be friends" and ends Emmet while he pleads reveals her sadistic nature. She likely felt powerful knowing Emmet's last thoughts were of his own inadequacy, realizing he was merely a pawn in her plan. She doesn't see anyone as her equal, not even Garth, who was simply a convenient way out and her alibi in the situation.
Maybe she doesn't see Garth as an equal, but in the movie, he is presented as the only one who does not fall on her beauty and charming manipulation and at least she respects him for that. Besides, he and she are the only ones who are left alive, she saved him so why she did do that, save him? Obviously, his sigma male allure attracted her to him. In the end, he is the only one who is "worth" according to her weird moral compass, skewed by the wrong understanding of Fridrich Nietzsche. In any case, he is the only real man in the movie.
To answer your question, it makes perfect sense why she wanted to kill herself even though she felt Superior to others. She has a similar mindset of an incell like Elliot Rodgers and Bryan Kohberger, (and similar to the Columbine killers as you mentioned). They believe they are superior to everyone else and frustrated that no one seems to recognize this. Basically they have an extremely high ego with extremely low self esteem, and are very sensitive to criticism. The only one on this list who didn't k!ll themselves after their murder spree was Bryan. So yes, su!cide is typical for this type of personality. Great job as always! Def will be checking out this movie 💙
We have no proof that Bryan is an incel. It is a self-identified label- aka you're an incel if you claim it. Kohberger is just a plain old misogynist, or as we used to call them back in the day, male chauvinist pigs! So puzzled as to why Harris and Klebold would make the list of incels... they obviously wouldn't be incels bc they died before Y2k & more importantly, their ideology (ie. the webpage filled with their violent fantasies) didn't focus on women. They hated people- full stop. Men who are unwilling to respect women as autonomous human beings, who think women possess less depth and intellect as men- does not make one an incel (IMO, based on the research I have done).
Did Eliot Rodger really feel superior to others? I can't help an impression that all talking up of himself he did was something he learned from therapy or self-help book. Like I think it's basically affirmations to try to hold back overwhelming self-hatred. Also, Eliot Rodger was highly atypical as an incel. It seems his main problem wasn't that he was lonely but because not being desired fuelled his self-hatred. When it comes to Columbine killers, they were basically Nazis. They believed that only the strong have right to live. I think that they hated themselves because they couldn't live up to their own ideals because of being physically weak and mental health problems.
@@fuzonzord9301 Elliot had grandiose narcissism. If you read his manifesto, it’s much more clear. People like that absolutely hate it when they cannot live up to their own ideals
You never saw the movie, yet you think you can answer some questions. High self-esteem over nothing because you don't know the material. Watch the movie and then try to spread some wisdom.
If you watched his tapes you'd know he felt very superior to the men and women he killed. He felt they they were dumb and folish looking for CHADS( the term incels use for normal/mature men). See incels tend to be narcissistic. Narcissist only care for them selves and see themselves as greater than other, but are very insecure deep down inside. Incels mask their insecurities through superiority. There's a whole deep dive on the midset of an incel and redpill ideology. Personally, I see Mandy as something similar. She loves attention, but acts like she's better than the people who give it to her. Then she uses a guys who gives her the most attention. She uses excuses like " they're creeps and using me" despite her being similar. In the end she considered one man to be worth the trouble to save, because she wanted him and saw him as a self-worth boost. "But behind this mask of extreme confidence, they are not sure of their self-worth and are easily upset by the slightest criticism." - mayoclinic.org @@fuzonzord9301
I was obsessed with this movie as a teen ! I'm not sure what it was but the atmosphere in the isolated house, full of teens was so COLD when it really shouldn't because they're supposed to have fun and be young etc yet they don't enjoy themselves, only pretend to. The wide shots of the house and the feeling of nothingness/emptiness, the sun still rising no caring about their fate while they were all scared and having mental breakdowns. Such a cold movie yet such a familiar tone (depression/feeling lonely and scared/having this distance with other people yet wanting to be close to them/realing most relationships will be guided by our selfish desires and not true appreciation of one another)
I really liked the atmosphere too. From the very first shots there's a profound awkwardness that permeates the entire movie. Whatever the teens are up to never really feels glamorized, especially if it involves Mandy, it feels uncomfortable and icky at times. Plus Mandy's ethereal aura but absolute stiffness really sells that she genuinely isn't all there, she feels very distant to the others, even in very close scenes like Bird kissing her or her helping Chloe in the bathroom.
I remember seeing this and that shotgun scene really stuck with me. It's such a personal, vile, visceral way to kill someone and it made my jaw hurt. Underrated gem.
This is definitely an unpopular opinion in the horror community, but I LOVE this film. It is dark, twisted, and you find Amber’s character evil but sympathetic at the same time. I think they cast this film perfectly. They had Mandy have blonde hair, blue eyes, doe eyed, and dressed in light colors. She looks angelic and ethereal. But there is something broken inside of her, and we don’t know if it’s because of her objectification and people’s desire to posses her…..or if something more dark inside of her makes her this way.
I love seeing this comment i am dying for a sharp objects video!! I am not in the mood to hear only mens opinions about it which is all i see on youtube lmao.
ah yes, the groomer handbook. its not just harvey weinstein doing creep shit, its everywhere in tv and movies. i think this shit is so bad for vulnerable people who are not mature enough to understand why its fucked up.
I used to read scripts for a living and this is one of the BEST analysis of the movie that I've ever seen. The one thing that isn't mentioned, and that I found off-putting about the movie, and perhaps one of the reasons the movie never really connected with audiences, despite the surprise ending, is that it's hard to identify or empathize with any of the high school characters. They're all essentially loud, shallow and/or vain, without any real redeeming personality features to offset the negatives. Bowling pins just waiting to be knocked down. Therefore, I had no emotional investment in what they say or did, or ultimately, even whether they lived or died. I wish the script's writer/director had found a way of navigating that obstacle/problem better than it did . But this was an excellent review and now I'm going to try and seek out the screenplay and afterwards, re-watch "All The Boys Love Mandy Lane". Thanks for your thoughtful critique.
This weekend my only objective in life was to be happy and finally enjoy myself because I had shittiest job week of my life. Yesterday I want shoping for skin care, watch the new Sofia Coppola movie, asked for 2 dishes at one of my favorite restaurants, and dessert and a cocktail. Today I ate at a new restaurant I have been waiting months to try (it was better than I thought), bought a cherry german beer, ate my favorite chocolatea, saw my girlfriend and made creppes. And the cherry on top, I get to do my skin care with one of your videos. Thank you so much!💕
Thank you so much for shedding some light over this massively underrated yet terrific movie. I absolutely love it when horror movies take a hold on tropes and cliches and then use them in their favor to convey some sort of social commentary, to me, this is one of the best feminist slashers out there
I personally really like the movie , I wasn’t aware of the content in the script. It definitely makes it more specific to Mandy’s character and why she does what she does . Great video ! ❤
It's interesting how little self-awareness Mandy has, overall. I mean, she thinks about herself in comparison to the others a lot and contemplates Nietzsche, sure but she has no understanding on how her emotions impact her actions too. She's hateful of everyone for having to change how they behave outwardly due to their insecurities but her own insecurity is so severe it drives her to commit serial murder to justify her self image as a wolf.
So would you say that Mandy Lane is a hypocrite dominated by her darkest emotions who thinks of herself as a wolf who's above everybody when she's no different to the sheep she had killed?
I adore this movie. I watched it the year it was released and I was a teen back then so many themes in this movie stood out to me. Body image issues and the competition between girls in high school. I remember being as smitten as I was jealous seeing Mandy lane and the way everyone gawked at her. The ending of this movie is pretty awesome.
Loved the analysis, and I wonder why these sorts of movies aren’t popular because everyone seems to be hating on the mainstream girlboss Mary Sue female lead movies right now. Also I find your accent really lovely….are you european?
I think the pill scene with Chloe was intentional, or at least it can be read as such. Chloe and Emmet are the two who are most mesmerized and consumed by Mandy throughout the movie, and they're the only two who die by Mandy's hand. The others show waning signs of interest in her, with Bird and his "I'm not like other boys" spiel and then not trying anything again post initial kiss, Red originally callings dibs but then doing nothing noteworthy to her and Jake exploding at her angrily when he is refused, and there's Marlin who barely acknowledges her as is. Chloe, on the other hand, keeps notice of Mandy throughout the movie, and she is the only other person who genuinely professes what she feels for Mandy (practically telling her she's jealous of her beauty and all) besides Emmet.
I loved Mandy Lane so fucking much she had the same rage I’ve possessed since girlhood ended. That last line of her saying she wants to finish high school first before she finishes him off is burned into my brain
I was annoyed the movie wasnt more well known. I rewatched it last year and thought it was a decent movie, related to her character at the beginning. Amber did a good job in the movie too and didnt expect the ending
I remember when I saw All the boys love Mandy Lane at age 13, it was Amber Heard's 1st movie I saw as a kid, who would have said many years later her Mandy Lane's role represented what Amber was really like in da real life "narcissist, manipulative and a toxic person" all the adjective she was over the trial with Johnny. That's what happens when you admire celebs, you dunno what they're really like behind the scenes, so I'm glad to know no one wants to work with her no more post-trial.
Thanks for the analysis Honestly it's not a great movie but I did like the characterization of the teens and some of the ideas. I read a lot of reviews that cheered on the teen's deaths but I agree. I didn't like watching them die. I also thought the lesbian subtext between Chloe & Mandy was kind of interesting. I wish they did more with it but it was an early 200's movie. though I do wish Marlin had survived instead. How cool would it of been if the slut character triumphed at the end?
Yea I was surprised by how overt the sexual tension between mandy and chloe was in that one scene. The eye contact, chloe staring at mandy's lips and the super close up shots of their faces and how mandy was touching her made it feel so intimate. I thought it was the director trying to show that mandy had the same effect on girls. Would be cool if someone made a movie specifically about that "do I wanna be her or be with her" feeling that a lot of lesbians experience
hey,i love your videos and seeing a female take on female characters, not just male interpretation through the male gaze. i’d love to hear your take on betty blue (1986), it’s one of my favorite movies ever with a very interesting female lead played by beatrice dalle. i just thought i’d drop the idea here!
Ik this is like a month later but I wanted to I love and look forward to you're posts. Also ik you like doing horror movies but have you ever thought about doing i believe in unicorns. Just a thought lol love your vids!
@@Amelia-qf2eqnope, wanna do some actual research on the case? a british court found that depp physically abused her on at least 13 occasions. and look up his texts with paul bettany, depp fantasized about murdering her and r*ping her corpse
@@Amelia-qf2eq He gets it. One day, people will re-tell the story of what happened. It’ll be like Britney Spears - everyone will pretend they weren’t aware of the abuse going on, though it happened largely in sight, cheered on by an irresponsible media. Amber’s not a perfect victim. But guess what, no one is.
I remember watching the movie after being recommended it because I had a true crime crush on Amber Heard. Fun fact: Amber Heard was an Ayn Rand fan as a teenager. So, that role has fit her perfectly.
Do you think you could do a video about poor creatures ? I know it's a new film but I'm struggling to wrap my mind around it and I would love to have your impressions on it ?
Honestly, after seeing Emmett scantily clad, he's a fair bit broader than the skinniest person I've ever been with. There's truly nothing wrong with that body type; it may not be the most popular but those who like slim men exist. Like all the rest, it's sad he wasn't given the opportunity to grow up and become a better person. Without Mandy, he may or may not have done anything like this; it's hard to tell, but regardless his insecurities were unnecessary.
