Thanks for being patient residents, I fixed my HDD and got this video finished. Hope you enjoy it! Which of these monsters is your favourite? And wish do you hope to see in the upcoming Gamera Netflix series? - Alastair
This is incredible to see! Every kaiju fan knows about Godzilla monsters, but the ones that faced off against Gamera are barely mentioned around the kaiju community. It’s amazing to see a proper look into these creatures.
I definitely think Gyaos will return. It's pretty much the King Ghidorah of the Gamera series...being his top rival and also the only enemy to appear in all 3 eras. I could maybe see Iris coming back as well and being the King or Queen of the Gyaos.
Gyaos is almost a certainty for the show, as it's Gamera's most well known enemy. I would love to see the return of Iris, Legion, and especially Barugon.
I really love the Gamera monsters They’re so unique with their strength and abilities I’m glad dangerville is mentioning these beasts They deserve their recognition
Heisei Gyaos is definitely my favorite due to the design. But can we all agree that Gamera did Zigra bogus, literally playing music on his body and then killing him😂
1: Should Viras and Zigra count as Seijin (aliens)? 2: I really hope that the "Gamera Rebirth" anime series would include new kaiju (especially ones who can be allies with Gamera).
I love the coverage of the Gamera monsters Dangerville. The only things missing is the fact that Heisei Gamera can draw upon mana, has a bond with a priestess, and can absorbed energy projectiles with their chest cavity
Legion is hands down gamera's strongest opponent, mainly based off the fact gamera was forced to use his ultimate plasma attack. An attack that he didn't to use due to the consequences it had afterwards.
Legion gets the advantage in numbers, but after the battle with them gamera has evolved. He evolved to the point he is not even faced with attacks from the hyper gyaos. It stands to reason that the 1999 gamera would beat legion. In terms of raw power, Iris is the toughest, legion has the numbers.
Honestly, the Kaiju I’d love to see in this anime would have to be a mix of them all. Gyaos is an obvious one, as they seem to tie into two other Gamera enemies, Iris and Zedus, though Iris was hinted at being a mutated Gyaos from the DNA sample. I’d love to see those two, and Jiger, Viras, and Zigra as well. Barugon would be nice to see, though I’d like to see him be more like his manga counterpart, that was of the extended or spin off for the Heisei Gamera series.
I really like this video! I feel that Gamera is overlooked and overshadowed by Godjira, and not holding it against the big guy either! I loved all of the Gamera movies, I'm surprised there are TWO movies I never saw! Viras and Iris, missed those two...so now I have more Gamers movies to see! Thank you Dangerville, keep up the amazing videos and here is hoping that Gamera Rebirth will be good!
I'll be honest - the giant flying turtle has always been my favorite kaiju. I'm looking forward to seeing what Netflix does to him, but considering what they're done to other properties, I'm really worried.
"Possibly Gamera's most famous antagonist: Gyaos". Dude, you could not be MORE right. If Gamera is ever added to the MonsterVerse, which I SINCERELY hope he will be, his "rival alpha" HAS to be Gyaos. There really is no other option to fulfill that role.
I have to disagree with you here. A singular Gyaos is no match for Gamera. This was made clear in the Heisei films. Iris would make a better rival because it's not only on the same level power and strength-wise, but there's also the theory presented in the films that Iris was literally made to be Gamera's rival.
@@saiga5476The Monsterverse would have different lore. Neither Gamera nor Iris would be created by any people in the Monsterverse, and they can make Gamera or Gyaos as strong as they want. Gamera Rebirth also seems to be showing a Gyaos swarm and one individual that can rival Gamera based on the trailers and marketing But even so you're kind of wrong. We see Super Gyaos in GOTU put up a great fight against Gamera (the other ones in that film are referred to as sub adult). Also Showa Gyaos was one individual and was one of Gamera's hardest fights. Now yes in Revenge of Iris, Gamera takes on multiple Hyper Gyaos (bigger than Super Gyaos) and wins handily. Gamera had just become that much stronger following the events of Advent of Legion. Base Gamera would be more equivalent to one Hyper Gyaos
@josephgibson5902 Who did more damage to Gamera, Irish or Super Gyaos? Super Gyaos may have put up a great fight, but it was never actually dominating the fight. Iris, on the other hand, had the upper hand against Gamera until the final moments of their fight. As for Showa Gamera Era, I'd say both Jiger and Guiron were harder battles for Gamera. And as far as what you're saying about the minsterverse being able to power the monsters however they want, yes you're technically correct. However, it's also a futile argument to make since it also doesn't help making the argument for Gyaos being the better opponent either. And it would really be in the interests of Legendary to keep to the established lore as best as they can, as everytime reboots and remakes veer away from he established lore from the original source, there is always backlash.
@@saiga5476 Iris scales better because he fought a stronger Gamera than Super Gyaos did. Technically there was a point where Super Gyaos was winning the fight, but Gamera used the fire to heal and win, and technically I wouldn't necessarily say that Iris was dominating until Gamera had to divide his attention on saving Ayana and got crucified. In any case, asking me to defend Gyaos solely on this basis is unfair . To briefly pivot to Showa Godzilla as an example, he was at the height of his power in terms of tanking attacks and throwing people around in Terror of Mechagodzilla. Titanosaurus dominated a fight against him. Meanwhile, Godzilla could defeat Ghidorah and Gigan with just Anguirus by his side at this point. Iris was stronger because it was better for that particular story that it be the case. Of course King Ghidorah is still stronger than Titanosaurus. Godzilla had just figured out how to beat him. Gamera was made to combat Gyaos so he'd be at an advantage already. I only say this to indicate that how a fight went is not the end all be all. G3 is ambiguous as to Iris's origin. I know Matt Frank retconned it, but one of the possibilities presented in film is that Iris is a very highly evolved form of Gyaos. How does that affect your argument? For Showa Gamera, I said Gyaos was "one of" not the. I agree that Guiron and Jiger were tougher fights, Jiger more for having too many special abilities and Guiron for just being that strong. Those three all took three rounds for Gamera to beat, compared to one for Viras, two for Zigra and Barugon. Since none of these have reappeared except for Rebirth, Gyaos has the highest marquee value to bring in as Gamera's opponents You're generalizing reboots. It's all execution. Heisei Gamera is literally an example of changing lore with little to no backlash because they did it well. But more importantly there's a very simple reason why if the Monsterverse brought in Gamera and Gyaos, Gyaos would have to be equal size and strength to Gamera. It's redundancy. Rodan is much smaller than Godzilla and not an equal. To have Gyaos be essentially an evil Rodan that way would make both feel less significant. But you're not proposing that. I think you want Gyaos swarm that has only really been seen at the end of G3 and in the 2015 short (GOTU, Guiron and The Brave featured smaller packs of three or so). Gyaos being a mindless man-eater that swarms while repopulating quickly and individual ones are not a threat but the horde is-- that's Skullcrawlers already. I'd prefer Legendary keep developing the Skullcrawlers than bring in Gyaos as like literally the same thing but with wings. So sure bringing in Iris might be more unique, but the execution of Iris was so specifically good in G3 that I hesitate to be as on board with lampooning it for the Monsterverse. The way it seems to me, and I could be wrong, is that you're taking for granted that Iris would be a better villain here, without actually thinking of how they would write it effectively. For example, I would actually argue that Legion is the strongest and best Gamera villain for having different stages and being overall the most powerful one that drove Gamera to the brink of death. I do not advocate for Legion to ever appear again because like with Iris, Kaneko's team was so meticulous with the lore and creative questions of "how would extraterrestrial life really realistically behave?" So we got the pneumatic air pressure within insectoid creatures that colonized through pod rockets with a queen that shed its wings as some insects do, and that's part of why Legion is so incredible. You take those parts away from Legion, and she's worse, same as if you take away the lore from Iris, I think we can agree there. But what if they keep the lore and just do it worse, execution doesn't land for whatever reason? Does that not diminish the characters and their impact? It's better that Legendary would either find a way to fit Gyaos into their lore or make up a new opponent from Monsterverse lore than half-heartedly try to meld Gamera lore with Monsterverse lore when those are incompatible Edited for typos. This is a longer response than I expected. Apologies. Actually wait you obfuscated, and I accidentally let you. Your initial claim was that no individual Gyaos is a match for Gamera. Even if there are stronger monsters, we have examples of individual Gyaos being a match (not defeating or killing, you said being a match) for Gamera
If Gamera somehow makes it into the MonsterVerse, kaiju fans will finally have their biggest dream come to life. The big three, all on screen together.
A bit kate to say this but your introduction to Gamera is amazing like telling a Legends story and I always loved like the way you say it maintains hype of the vid and the character your explaining its AMAZING
There's also Space Gaos and Hyper Gaos. But anyway, I'd love to see any of the classic Kaiju from Gamera return along with new ones. Even unused concepts such as Garasharp and Leomon
It’s kind of funny. My mother interoduced me to Godzilla, but it was my dad who introduced me to Gamera. First time watching the 90’s movies, I was in awe at how amazing they were. As for who will appear in the Gamera anime, it’s not Gamera without Gyaos.
I would really like to see some new original Kaiju in the upcoming series, especially if they end up being allies of Gamera cause lets face it it's about time he had some. But the one Kaiju I think everyone knows will be coming back is Gyaos since their the most popular villain of the series. but two classic Showa monsters I would like to see make a comeback are Barugon as they were the first opponent Gamera fought and it would be awesome to see the dreaded Death Rainbow again. the other being Zigra, I know not the most popular choice, but I feel that there is some potential with his character due to his ability to mind control people, plus I always thought he looked cool.
Thanks for taking the time to create this Dangerville. I am trying to write how I would create the Monsterverse (with Gamera kaiju included) and this will be another resource I can go back and look at easy peesy.
There are a few more Gamera kaiju. You guys should look into Gamera Vs Garasharp. It’s a official short made for a laserdisc Gamera set. It has two new kaiju in it too. Being Garasharp herself and Marukobukarappa. They’re a big part of Gamera canon too with Garasharp being in the canon prequel comic too the Heisei Trilogy. Also there’s a unnamed tentacle monster in the 2015 Gamera short film as well. Love the video though. Been a massive fan of Gamera since I was a kid.
As someone who knows almost nothing of gamera i really appreciate this I only recently heard of them from the wikizilla youtube channel and seeing them soon get an anime made me want to know more
You know what I find funny back before I knew that my now favourite Gamera kaiju iris was a real thing I had a dog and we decided to name her iris and now whenever we’re on the topic of Gamera I always think ‘what a coincidence’
Great compilation review! I love this kind of kaiju bestiaries biographies and lore! I am already intrigued in the restart what new or old kaijus we will see !!
I freaking LOVE Gamera. I had named my pet turtle Gamera as a kid. I saw the Heisei Gamera 1 and 2 back to back at a Sci-Fi con, the movies werent dubbed or even subtitled yet, so the guy who had them translated for us while we watched. Such a good memory
Barugon was always my favorite, shortly followed by Guiron, so I’m definitely hoping they come back along with some new monsters. Honestly I’m not sure why Gyaos of all things turned into Gamera’s archenemy, I don’t get the hype but if/when they come back they’ll be welcome I guess.
I love Barugon, but Barugon as a species would never make sense as a nemesis to Gamera. Barugon's weakness was water. That means the species could not have reasonably spread to other regions of the earth. Meanwhile, Gamera and Gyaos are both capable of leaving the entire planet and traveling into space. Which means that even if multiple Barugon hatched at the same time and even took over whatever country/continent they were on and could have a huge numerical advantage over Gamera, there would have been no stopping Gamera from just saying "screw you guys, I'm going home" and leaving. That doesn't make for much of a rivalry.
Gyaos became the archenemy for a few reasons. Gamera vs Gyaos made money. Gamera vs Guiron didn't have the budget to make Monga so instead spray painted Gyaos. And then finally Kaneko considered bringing Barugon back for GOTU but ultimately went with Gyaos, and the rest of history
@josephgibson5902 That argument doesn't hold water. They literally made a single Gamera the guardian of the universe to fight against an entire generation of Gyaos. A single Gyaos is simply not a match against Gamera. As much as I love the species, it just isn't strong enough to be a true nemesis for Gamera on a one on one basis. Iris was the *only* post Showa Era kaiju to truly hold its own one on one against a full strength Gamera. Daiei created Iris to be Gamera's equal
@@saiga5476 no Saiga this is how I know you're not interacting in good faith. You see multiple Gamera carcasses in G3. The Atlanteans made multiple Gameras. That is also true in Matt Frank's retcon comic The Last Hope. Also Daiei didn't create Iris; Kaneko and his team did. Daiei only put restrictions to them on GOTU; the behind the scenes for these movies is well known. Also Legion held her own against Gamera as well, so did Zedus, but that was a weaker Gamera in a different continuity. Ultimately the argument that you don't think holds water was behind the scenes. You're trying to argue within continuity, which can be fair but doesn't address mine Edit: I thought this was a different conversation. I've made the appropriate adjustments to this one
@josephgibson5902 now, see, you're the one not arguing in good faith. What points did you make that I ignored? You said they made Gyaos to be Gamera's archenemy in GotU. I responded that it doesn't hold water because they then made Iris after GotU and made it an even stronger nemesis. You may not agree with that, butto accuse me of arguing in bad faith is a really crappy thing to do, especially when you hypocritical say I ignored you point and then ignored mine. I would continue this discussion if you were worth my time, but with that accusation you made, you're not.
This video was a great in-depth look at the history of Gamera especially for me bc I heard of him a few times and now I know much much more. Thanks @DangerVille Alastair!
I really appreciate that you took the time to search and find all the information about Gamera's enemies. I grew up watching Gamera and Godzilla, and they are my favorite kaiju of all time.
I'd sure like to know where they came up with the weights. Considering their sizes, those creatures must have a density about the same as styrofoam. But hey, as long as we get some good kaiju movies, who cares about things like logic? And I can appreciate the Gamera movies were not afraid to show the monsters getting hurt.
I had no idea there’s a new thing for Gamera coming. That is awesome. It’s evident Gyaos will probably be in it, but it would be cool to see some new monsters, or even new iterations of some of the old ones. The animation on Barugon’s rainbow beam would be cool. There could also honestly be a whole few episodes or even a season of Legion alone, hoping between Gamera and the humans fights
Amazing video! I've been a Gamera fan since my childhood. Glad we're getting some love for it this year. An animated series, new action figures , and who knows...maybe a new live-action down the road, hopefully!
Bro you just triggered so much panic in my mind with the Guiron cry question. Part of me has memorized every cry from Walking With Dinosaurs but has lost names for them after so many years. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I knew that roar. Thanks for giving me my daily brain storm, or panic attack haven't calmed down enough to decide which yet.
What I hope for the new anime is new monsters as well as old ones. For old ones, I would like to see Gyaos (of course), Guiron, Jiger, Zigra, Irys, and hopefully the unused Garasharp.
I know it’s unlikely but if the MV ever included Gamera, a good way to introduce him and his enemy’s is making Gamera the Guardian of that gravity void we see in GVK. Maybe that’s where the Gamera’s evolved. Right now nobody is covering that massive area. Like maybe Gamera is keeping the absolute worst trapped there like a prison. Monsters like Gyaos, Iris, Gigan, etc could be down there. Basically anything that would make sense in a hyper gravity void. Also maybe Gamera only goes after those who make themselves his problem personally. While Godzilla and Kong are E for Everyone. Maybe humans have been down there. The issue could be those monsters are escaping because humans have been collapsing vortexes all around the world without us knowing. Plus Godzilla blew a hole through one. Maybe the vortexes is what stops the monsters from entering the surface or the HE. Basically Prison Warden Gamera is just cleaning up everyone’s mess and he’s not happy about it. Godzilla protects the surface, Gamera protects the gravity void. Kong protects the HE. All 3 layers are protected.
Well because Gyoas is Gamera’s most iconic foe I.E his King Ghidorah, I suspect that he’ll be there for Gamera Rebirth but then again the show might be a Godzilla Singular Point on us and update some other Classic Kaiju from the franchise like Barugon and Guiron. However these also the possibility that there maybe some originals that will make an appearance but my first guess is going to be Gyoas.
You forgot to mention that when legions nasal horn is ripped off its face it can fire crimson whip like energy beams that can lash & even pearce through opponents!
This brought back awesome memories! I remember playing with little rubber gamera and kaiju. I loved godzilla but I had gamera toys. The Gamera shows had great heart and a little more action than godzilla. So happy he's coming back!
The heisei Gamera films were wonderful. I especially liked the score for Guardian of the Universe; it compares very well to the classic Godzilla films' themes.
You should do these more often especially with Godzilla. I’d say start with every Kaiju seen in Godzilla’s Showa Era and then move on from there to the Heisei and Millennium Eras. Amazing and awesome work as always
I love Gamera. In all honesty his Showa era movies are cheesy fun, but far from essential viewing. The 90s trilogy, however, are 3 of the finest kaiju movies ever made. Gamera the Brave is also good time, though a little more geared towards kids.
I couldn't agree with you more in your assessment of the Heisei Gamera movies. They are fine movies that leave the clumsy, badly written and paced old movies in the dust. Everybody I've ever shown them to has been most impressed, and I'm glad we're getting new Gamera soon!
The way he flies actually makes sense. The jets point slightly downward and cause a spinning motion, mimicking a gyroscope and creating stability. In order to change direction you’d just need to lean. It’s similar to a helicopter.
Gamera's rouges gallery is so underrated, Gyaos is fucking iconic and terrifying as hell Legion is just badass And Iris is basically the Anti Gamera, like how Destroyah is the Anti Godzilla, so if course she's the best
Holy damn. I never realized the insane weight difference between Gamera and Godzilla... 😱 If they were to ever engage in physical hand to hand combat... Well... let's just say it was nice knowing you Gamera 😰
I'm a Biggggg Godzilla fan,but it's about time da "Original G" mutant turtle get some respect and his foes.Good to know his rival and hopefully they bring really all his foes in this new anime.Thank DangerVille.. Gamara is one of the OGs of Big Monster suits 😆.. keep up da awesome fam,👍💯
All of gamers enemies would even give Godzilla quite a challenge when you think about it. I wonder what Mecha Gamera would be like or fighting King Kong?
I love Gamera, wish they made more, but looking forward to see what Netflix does. Now we need Gatchaman or Battle for the Planets or G-Force depending on what people have seen
There was one more monster from the Showa era whose movie was cancelled while filming: Garasharp, a gigantic cobra-like beast that could absorb heat through her tongue, breathe a poisonous mist, and had a drill on her tail tip that also created supersonic vibrations.
Just to point out that Legendary Godzilla has so much elements inspired from Heisei Gamera such as something to do with a fallen civilization Atlantis, programed to beat other kaiju that is a threat to the planet, turning from a epitome that doesn't give a damn about humans to a guardian. When I 1st watched Legendary Godzilla I imagined I am watching Gamera right away as he is clearly not the classic Toho Godzilla that wreaks havoc wherever he goes.
