Wow, that piano playing was gorgeous! Cheers for the tour Paul 👍

Yup, I'll second those thoughts Pauly... So much so that you should definitely get back into piano. I didn't recognise the tune, but assume it was something 'we' should recognise. I've often thought I'd like some kind of keyboard to sit on my desk in the same way as yours. However, I've not played since I was a wee tacker & get so confused looking at the options and quickly get back to looking at guitar gear. 😂 I think for making music (serious or fun), a keyboard is almost essential. Perhaps you may suggest where to start or what to look out for? Cheers. 🎸🎸🎸

Thanks Paul - i guess its a good “rut buster’ too being able to focus on a different instrument for abit - but…. Guitar is just so much better hahaha

I keep meaning too but that good old excuse of time and the fact i do prefer guitar means months pass in-between ever playing it 😪 I suppose the first thing is to decide what size you think you want, personally i wouldnt go smaller then full 88 keys but…. Its not necessary. Then to decide do you want something thats a stand alone unit using its own built in sounds or something thats a controller for software. My go-to budget full piano set up would be something like the M-Audio Hammer 88 plugged into a computer running one of the various plugins you can get. Youll get sounds and keyboard action that would cost £1000’s as a standalone unit…. But thats only me and someone else may prefer something totally different. My go-to money/volume/space no object option would be to have a relatively new acoustic piano constantly mic’d up but…. I cant lol.

@@Paul-D Thanks Pauly... I've literally got no idea, just something in the back of my mind that I thought could be useful. Perhaps you could do a one off for guitarists.... Cheers!

Reducing gear and focusing on less stuff feels really good! Cool to see you did the same. Great video mate.

Yeh exactly and the katana is obviously alot less money then the stuff ive sold so it means i can have anit of an open mind and budget for whatever comes next down the line. Thats the thought process anyways. I want to get back to some live playing and that always chucks up a cost here and there for improvements/workflow/transport haha.

I agree completely about the versatility and high-quality tone of the Katana Artist Mk 2, Paul. I now use the combo as my main stage and recording amp and find it superb. The build quality makes it seem less a permanent amp than most Marshalls and Fenders perhaps. But in terms of sound and connectivity it deserves more respect than it gets, I feel. As regards your comment on mics, I suppose all of us are used to thinking we hear amps directly in recordings but they’re always mediated by mics, if they’re analogue and have physical cabs and this opens up a whole other area of discussion. Thank you for a really interesting run-down of your gear.
@Paul-D
@Paul-D 11 месяцев назад
I guess i never really consciously thought of the build quality compared to other amps ive had but now you mention it, thats definitely how it feels - good but somehow less permanent.

It's good to have your agreement on this, Paul. I wonder what the reputation of the Katana might be if it was built like a JCM 800! @@Paul-D

yeh I suppose theres always the katana mk3 which can't be too far away haha. There is actually a solid state boss Waza amp head that ive seen very very little of. Time to do some research on that haha

I have the same wah, product info says the below so I think it's a slightly tweaked version, also made in Japan. I like it as I found it had a similar sweep to the WH10 with non of the compromises of the WH10: - Based on the specs of the classic original VOX wah from the 60's the VOX V847-C Custom Wah faithfully brings the legendary wah sound into the present day - The frequency range of the wah has been set lower, the Gain boosted and the Q-Value (the sharpness of the wah's peak) has been adjusted to deliver a more powerful sound. With true bypass the signal does not pass through the circuit when the unit is turned off, ensuring that its timbre character is not affected - The V847-C also has a warmer tone than the original that provides not only a more powerful wah but a still tasteful, warm wah effect
@Paul-D
@Paul-D 11 месяцев назад
Ahh well that explains why i like it so much. I thought it was the same because i bought it in person from the show not from a generic music store but from a Vox employee directly and he said it was just a V847 silvertop hahaa.

Just snagged the last Keeley AT mod pedal here in OZ. Had to get one after seeing your video about it in your rig. Cheers mate.

Nice one mate, i tend to run mine on the phat mode with the drive around 10 o clock stacked onto a pushed sound

Cheers Pauly, loved this. You've answered my quest. Ive been looking for a Phat pedal and I think the Keelet AT mod is the answer after seeing your set up. Loved it. Well done.

I promise its way better sounding then i made it out to be here too haha. Its got all the gain you could need without sounding “pedally” if that makes sense. But with alot of emphasis on the bottom end compared to alot of more mid focused drives.

I would definitely go for the head and if you check out used zilla cabs or something they sell for like 60%+ less then they cost new.

Thanks for sharing your gear Pauly, I was hoping you'd do that, knowing you are a tone fiend with good taste in gear. If you want to use a 10-46 string set thats more flexible, Pyramid and GHS make sets with thinner cores, so they bend easier. I find using 9-46 sets works well on the Gibson scale guitars, the wound strings being slightly heavier balances it better, for me anyways. I've been going to 9-46 on Fender type guitars (Shijie in my case), and it works well on them too. The semi-hollow guitars do seem to prefer slightly heavier strings, but I like to bend the plain strings and 10-13-17 plain strings are too stiff for me anymore. You also mentioned the SB59 with SD'59 pickups sounds too "modern"? I mentioned this in another comment somewhere I think: I've read several times in forums that people change the AlNiCo-5 magnet to AlNiCo-2 (or 3,4) and that makes a HUGE difference. Since you know how to flip magnets now, you could also inexpensively change the magnet and do a video maybe? I'd love to see that if you do, and it might make that guitar much more musical sounding to your ears...? Always enjoy your videos, us tone-fiends never get enough - no? Cheers mate!
@Paul-D
@Paul-D 11 месяцев назад
Ahh i didnt know about those strings, might be good to try those and ditch the top wrap thing. I did give it some thought about swapping out the magnet for alnico 2, but was more drawn to swapping the pickups to ones i was familiar with and knew what to expect from. But… for now im just thinking to leave them as they are and have that option of a more modern sounding pickup compared to my other 2.

That boost pedal sounds more like a compressor than the compressor pedal did, at least that's how it sounded through youtube. Thanks!

Yeh take the sounds with a pinch of salt here, the single 57 even way off axis colours the sound too much in a more unpleasant way thats why i dont tend to use it - maybe i have the 1 dodgy 57 🤣 thanks for checking it out

Next time you hear a good sounding amplifier, chase the speakers inside the cab used and buy/ try them in your cab. Also i like final fantasy 10 music but not my favourite final fantasy lol
