Rachel, you have to read Razorblade Tears now. It's by the same author and it's about the fathers of two men who were in a relationship and killed in a hate crime coming together to hunt down their sons' killers because the justice system is failing them. And they have to deal with their own homophobia and racism along the way because it was an interracial queer relationship.

SA COSBY IS A GENIUS like I think he is the best current working writer. Something I value about him was using this book as a jumping off point to talk about racism with my grandfather. He is about to have a half black grandson and my mom, sister and I have been trying to help the older more bigoted family members learn so my brother in law doesn't have to be the one to shoulder that burden from my sister's white family. And SA Cosby's book is blatantly about race and religion and police brutality. But is an incredible thriller. So my grandfather who adores thrillers got into this book and this opened his eyes in a way that bigoted news sources fed to 80 year old white men never will. Him realizing that his great grandson will have a very different experience and it was something he was ignorant to really got him emotional. And that wasn't something I expected. It's not shy about its message at ALL but it's still brilliantly accessable even to old bigoted men.

I also gave this book 5 stars. Your review expressed my feelings for it amazingly well. Thank you. I am especially drawn to books set in the area where I live - Southeastern Virginia. I had stopped watching this video once you got to the spoilers and put the audiobook on hold from Libby. This book was so heavy, but so worth it. I mostly read romance these days (decades, really) but I cut my teeth on horror/thriller/crime novels in my preteen and early teens, so this really spoke to my roots. Since I mostly read romance I don't read the books you typically cover, but I love watching your videos for your insights and your frank discussion on race, inequality, etc. I appreciate you Rachel.

This book sounds really good. The serial unaliver is reminding me of John Doe from the movie Se7en (which I still haven’t recovered from) and I always found horror to be a metaphor on what can happen if certain issues or ideologies are left unchecked and end up taking over a mundane society.

I definitely couldn't handle actually reading this right now, so it was really nice to be able to hear you talk about it instead. The book sounds incredible and I definitely relate to losing faith from tragedy. Though for me it was more questioning if I even HAD faith to begin with since I was so young during the loss that it felt more like I was a kid doing what they were told because the adults said so. I want to try out some S.A. Crosby books when I'm in a better place for sure! He apparently also has some fantasy out there, though I'm not sure what kind and for what age range, so maybe I could do some more research and see if that's an option for me. Thanks for the video! 🧡

I paused the video before the spoiler section, checked Libby and yay the audiobook was available! Within the first chapter I was HOOKED. Never read anything by Cosby before, but I already love his writing style and the narrator is 😘👌 The synopsis reminds me a bit of a book I read a long time ago, A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash. Another Southern crime book with religious trauma at the center of it. Probably not as good as this (it was the author's debut, and I read it years ago) but maybe worth checking out if you want something similar

If I may ask what is a snake preacher?
@BandFairy
@BandFairy 2 месяца назад
Snake handling churches are a small denomination of Southern Pentecostal Christianity. The belief is based on a couple passages in Bible about the Might of God protecting you from the venom of serpents and they kind of took that and ran. Pentecostals are also the ones who speak in Tongues, so the while experience is pretty intense and can be a bit traumatic. They're also typical secluded and insular, which is why "snake handling church" or "snake preacher" is used derisively.

I was really irritated about Darlene until the end where she leaves. I just felt she was written with no personality and stereotyped the "good woman" by the writer. Then after she left it was clear she was written that way because that's how Titus saw her. He didn't see her personality, he just gave her this "good woman" status and used that as a reason to stay in the relationship.

S.A Cosby is from my hometown, and I can 100% understand where his frustrations come from. Our hometown literally feels like it's going to boil over with the religious fascism and overwhelming racism and sexism. I read this a bit worried about the violence and while there are some descriptions that are graphic it did not feel gratuitous. I read "pretty girls" by Karen Slaughter and the graphic descriptions of violence in that book put me off that author for life. I can't forgive her for what she exposed my mind to. It also felt like unessessary whereas in this book nothing is described unessessarily and there's nothing graphic just for shock value.

From the comments I've seen, I'm starting to think this author's work is described as "muscular" because the author apparently is able to even convince deeply bigoted idiots to get empathy for people who are "different" (other faiths or no faith, black, queer, whatever).
