They put stuff on baseballs or scuff them up so when they throw the ball they put a great deal of spin on it causing it to travel in very strange ways a ball may go straight then suddenly drop or veer to the left of right causing the batter to miss. also the corked bat is very debatable, you may swing it faster but there is much less mass so the energy may be less.also hitting it long has very little advantage, there are plenty of balls caught that have been hit very long.
