We first saw the Rad Mini Step Thru, Debbie, on your channel before we even thought about ebikes. After watching you, Judy and I bought two Rad Mini Step Thrus. When I transport my Rad in my Subaru I don’t fold the bike in half I just fold the handlebars down. I then use a folding dog ramp to roll it up and in, or roll it out. Easy for me to do it by myself. I have about as much chance of lifting a 70 pound bike into my SUV, as lifting the SUV off the ground. John you’re too maxi for the mini. I think the Rad Rover is perfect for you, especially with the fat tires. Why spend 3 to 4 times that for a status brand that will be less rugged? The step thru, in my opinion, is the better choice for these 70 pound behemoths. Thank goodness they have stopped ridiculously calling it a Girls’ Bike. In fact, if people were logical, men would ride horses side saddle and women would ride astride. And guys would only ride step thru bikes. Unless they wanted to risk going from a baritone to a soprano after a bad stop!

I just ordered a Cyrusher Kommoda, because people rave about the comfort of its dual suspension. I’m a 71 year old female and I never worry about any limits because of my age. Great video!! We need more women reviewing these bikes. !! Nice job! Very informative! Thank you! PS I was going to order a Rad Mini, but they stopped making them. I think that was a huge mistake, on Rads part. But, I’m also not sure if they are thinking about all the women who purchase ebikes. Men want super fast, we want comfort and easy. Merry Christmas!

@@FromShetoMe FYI: Cyrusher has a new ebike called the Ovia. It has quite a few improvements over the Kommoda, but while talking to a salesman, and watching their review, he encouraged me to go with the Kommoda, because I am 5’2”. In their description of the Ovia, it says it’s the same inseam size as the Kommoda, but I don’t think so. The Ovia is taller and longer. I loved the red one, but after many hours of deciding, I trusted the salesman and I went with the Kommoda.

I finally decided to get the mini step-thru for my 67 year old wife after hearing your explanation about not feeling comfortable astride your husband's mini. I have the Rad Mini, four years in. This was an excellent review. It is heavy . Folding is unwieldy. I always take the battery off to save weight. Loading is easier with two wide Velcro straps so wheels don’t flop around. I use Green Slime to fortify the tires. The Cloud Nine seat makes the bike very comfortable and would be good for a woman. Love the videos.

As usual a great video. We have two Rad Mini Step Thru bikes (Foldable) which we got for use in Trailer Camping. The plan was to fold them up and put them in the back of our SUV, for transit, and then unfold them for use. We recently sold our Oliver Trailer, in favor of a Pleasureway Ascent, which we will also use as our Daily Driver. We can't recommend the Rad Mini ST more, they are very nice. The plan is to now mount the two bikes on the back of our Sprinter using the 1Up Super Duty Double Rack (with loading Ramp) with their RacAttack Swing Out Arm Assy. We had to modify the Rear Fenders (by 10 inches) to fit the 1Up Hold Down Brackets. During transit we plan to lowering the Seats and Handle Bars and covering the Bikes for security and protection from the weather. One of the accessories we will mounting on the 1Up Rack, is their Cargo Add-On attachment, which we will use to mount a Storage Box on to carry a Grill and Fire Pit. Is it possible to attach Pics to a RU-vid reply?

II have watched dozens, literally dozens of these folding bike reviews, looking for someone who actually used them in real world type RV/travel solutions, especially off road situations like Utah back roads and this is the best review I have seen yet. Really excellent real world scenarios. I also really like that a female is doing most of it. Two Tired Teachers also do a reasonable real world job, but yours is the best I have seen, by a long shot. The off roading was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much.

I've seen where foldable Rad owners put the bikes into big storage tubs to both store, load and transport. They slide the tub up a 2x4 length making it easier to load & unload, then tip the tub on its side when out, take the bike out, unfold & ride. Looks easier for a 1 person trip.

We bought 2 of the new RadExpand 5 bikes which are similar to the minis but a few pounds lighter. The HDX 70 gal tote works well. Otherwise, it is easy to remove the front wheel and put it in a smaller tote. Just be careful to protect the rotor, if you take that approach.

Debbie, My wife and I also have the same Rad Mini''s carried in the same Hollywood rack as you... mounted on a swing away hitch, as you... mounted on our 2020 Pleasure Way Plateau Fl, similar to you!! (whew!) Yes we also love all of the above. My point of discussion is about loading and unloading the Mini's. We have found it very easy for ONE person to do this. First I pick up the front of the bike and place the front tire into its holder, the rear tire is still on the ground.. Although that puts the bike at a strange angle, it is manageable. Then it is now simple to pick up the back of the bike and finish loading the rear tire into its holder. Repeat with my wife's Mini step through. I'm 65 and only 5'9", so...no superman. My wife was also able to load them herself (when I threw out my back on a recent trip to the Keys). She's 64 and your size. You might try this method. I was worried about loading after watching one of your videos from a yr or so ago, but this method COMPLETELY eliminates the "loading/unloading" stress. Hope you have as much luck with this method as we have.... Rad on!!! Love your videos! Ron & Marla

Thank you for making this video. At 70 years I am considering an e bike to keep me cycling. At first i considered the Rad Rover. It sounded perfect until i watched a video on just how big a bike it really is.. The 26 inch wheels are actually 29 inches tall with the large fat tries, and when you place the Rover next to a regular mtn bike, it towers over it! So, I started looking at the Rad Mini. Being a typical male, I preferred the regular look of the Rad Mini, but after listening to your descriptions of the bikes, I'm beginning to realize that for me at 5ft 5inches, the Step-thru may be perfect. I notice in the video that when we see you actually riding the bike, it does not look small at all.

Very well done comprehensive review of the rad-mini. I've also had mine for 3 years now. Have riden hunderds of miles in a wide variety of conditions. Am very pleased with the bike. I'm 6-1, not quite as tall as John. I researched ebikes pretty thoroughly before deciding on rad. For all the reasons you mention I went with the mini. The folding feature was another reason I wanted this bike. I use this feature quite often. Because of the weight you need a serious rack and usually professional installation. This can cost as much as the bike. I can fold the bike up and it fits well into the back of my Subaru Crosstrtek. I usually line the floor with heavy cardboard and cover the bumper area with an old towel. As you stated they are heavy bikes. I'm managing now but may need a rack at some point. Again, thanks Debbie & John for your excellent content! Very best wishes to you and followers!

If bent too much your leg can get cramps, but then these are eBikes so your legs get rest when not pedaling. I’m staring 75 in the face (March) and I’ve decided that my best ploy was to marry a 6‘2‘ husband! He can pick heavy things up and set them up somewhere much higher than I could ever manage. When I pull down the factory bike rack that came with our Travato, I scratch my head wondering how I would do it alone. But since it has a 100# limit, if we ever decide to get a second ebike, I’m considering getting a hitch cargo container and a folding Rad Mini. One Rad on the bike rack and one folded in the cargo carrier. (Look up Maxxhaul 70107 hitch carriers on Amazon to get an idea of what I’m talking about. There are gazillions of different brands and sizes. I just happened to see Maxxhaul first.) There are really nice, really expensive Ebike carriers that have ramps to go down to the ground, which is another option. I think Yakima…

I stumbled across this rack for hanging 1-2 regular bikes on your RV ladder on Etrailers: www.etrailer.com/RV-and-Camper-Bike-Racks/Surco-Products/SP501BR.html Not sure if an ebike would work as well ( the smaller folding ones have shorter seat tubes - and you’d want to remove the heavy battery, but the battery mounts might be in the way - dunno), but one ebike would weigh under the rack’s maximum 75# specs. But even the price on this is going up! A few months ago when I first stumbled across it, it was around $65. And rvupgradestore.com has a lot of bike racks. Probably mostly not for ebikes, but they have one rack that’s $180 that’s made for a small motorcycle. With ramp! That would certainly work for a fat tire Ebike. Ultra-Fab Ultra MX carrier)

Hi , another great video, thanks very much, You have excellent presentation skills. I would like to make a few suggestions re: bike choice. Before anyone buys a bike with smaller diameter tires I would recommend they rent a standard mtn bike and see if the 27.5 inch diameter tires gives them a more stable ride in rough terrain when compared to the smaller tires on the RAD bikes. We have learned through trial and error that the narrow seats that are generally sold with a mtn bike are worth considering. The wide seat is very comfortable at first but on longer rides and/or frequent rides they can cause some nerve pinching. My wife experienced this and the local bike shop suggested she go back to the narrow seat that the bike came with. She switched the seat and problem solved. Once again, great videos!

Good suggestion. I guess we figure by the time folks get to be our age, they've tried all kinds of bikes. But that is not a good assumption. I have a neighbor who has never ridden a bike.

My husband and I have the RadCity regular and step through. I agree that having the step through just feels better with how heavy the bikes are. I’ve never had to bail completely, but we live on a hill so you have to exit quickly to keep the bike from falling. The other thing I like about the step through is that I’m only 5’ 2” and it’s perfectly comfortable for a person of my height. I like being able to have two feet on the ground and I never feel unstable when stopped.

Thank you for the detailed info on Rad bikes and general information about traveling with and using an ebike. All your videos have been very helpful to me in setting up and living in our new Class B and locations to visit. I am preparing for our very first extended trip. Up to now we have only camped a few days at a time to get experience with how to use all the bells and whistles in our RV. We’ve had over 30 years of tent camping experience but camping in a RV is totally different. We live in Virginia and look forward to traveling west. We’ve decided that our first cross country trip would be on the 4,900 mile Lewis & Clark National Historical Trail that passes through 16 states. After my husband and I read “Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West” written by Stephen Ambrose we thought this would be the perfect first cross country trip for us. We will wait until COVID-19 is no longer a threat to begin our journey. Stay safe, healthy and enjoy new adventures in 2021.

Good video. Thanks for the review. Well I'm not personally interested in the rad, as I have a custom built electric fat bike with a mid drive motor, my girlfriend needs a bike to ride with me. I live in a RV full-time and love my e-bike. Although I could definitely see the step through being a huge advantage as I get older, I'm having more trouble with my hip. Swinging. Swinging my leg over the seat can be difficult which is why I put a dropper seat post in. When it works great. It's great. But they're a little bit touchy. You touched on all the points that I wanted to see so thanks for that. I sent this video to her to check out as well.

Thanks Bob. There are tons of bikes in that price range and I'm guessing they are all very similar. John will be graduating to a big boy bike before the year is out. But in the meantime, they have given us lots of pleasure. The only problem your girlfriend may see is that they are so heavy. That makes the step through even more important.

Thank you for an informative and well-presented treatment of the topic. What is your opinion of bike alarms as a security measure? Do campgrounds tend to frown on them because if they go off in the middle of the night it would disturb other campers?

My wife and I both have the Rad Rover fat tire off road bikes full size. She has allot of trouble getting on and off because of the bar on the bike. Now they make a full size fat tire with the step thru so we will be purchasing one for her. But we absolutely love ours. We do so much more exploring because of the e bike. If it was a regular bike it would be to hard as all our riding is off road so makes for wonderful exploring.

If anybody is wondering about the style of motor on the neighbors Radcity bike, that's a direct drive motor. That style of motor offers more efficiency at higher speeds and gives you some regenerative braking, (though the utility of regenerative braking on a bicycle is up for debate). If your primary use case for an ebike is commuting on pavement, then the direct drive is a good choice because you can go further, faster. The other style of motor is known as geared hub. That's the style on most Rad bikes models because it has way more low end torque. Torque is important if you want to have a good experience powering through sand or snow, or going up hills. No point putting fat tires on a bike if you don't have enough power to plow through the sand on a beach!

Judy and I bought two Rad Mini Step-Thrus because of your original Rad recommendations. Step thrus are not logically girls bike. If people were logical, men would ride horses side saddle and women astride. And a boys bike would be a step-thru especially if you’re a male who doesn’t want to go from a baritone to a soprano after a too sudden stop on a boys bike with a high bar. To carry the ebikes in either our Subaru Outback or Forester, we only put the handlebars down then wheel the ebike in and out of the rear hatchback on a folding dog ramp. Easy for one person of limited strength and agility (I’m 78) to load and unload the ebikes in two minutes. Many Rad Mini owners put their folded ebikes into a 50 gallon Craftsmen container and can better maneuver then in and out, or store them. Try Cloud 9 bike seats that are very comfy. John at his height really needs a Rad Rover. Unless he fears the stigma of low cost when compared to a Specialized ebike. Incidentally, Rad has excellent customer service.

I like your way of thinking. Made me laugh thinking of John Wayne riding side saddle. A dealer recently told John there aren’t any bikes for his size so we’ll stick with the mini. They are a blast. Thanks for the seat recommendation, I’ll check it out.

Debbie, thanks for the great video! Yours is the first I've found that comes close to paralleling my future adventures. Also, several great ideas. I stopped using my tow car with my motorhome because what I really want is to explore areas like those you showed in this video. You mentioned your own future and getting a bike with full suspension. Do you have your eye on any any particular bike or a short list? My inseam is only 27" so a step-through an perhaps low seat angle will be necessary to get my feet on the ground for full control. I'm looking at bike racks with ramps or constructing my own ramp. I'll subscribe and follow your adventures.

Thanks! John will probably be the first to get a new bike and he is looking at the Pedigo. One thing we don’t want to be constantly worrying about is theft. A good full suspension bike would be a target so we’ll see. But if we had a larger rig with storage then John likes the Specialized bikes. You might want to subscribe to Bolton Ebikes for better info than I can provide. Good luck and please pass on any tips you discover in your research.

@@FromShetoMe , I’ll take a look at Bolton. There’s a Pedego near me; I rode their Boomerang Platinum last week. Not sure the tires on it or the Interceptor would be sufficient for some of the trails. Don’t see myself doing some of the rougher places you were at in your video - as a solo traveler I need to be more cautious. I’m thinking I might need a fatter tire than either of those Pedego’s offer. I’ve considered a pull system in my rig’s ladder for transport to avoid lifting the bike lol. Have fun!
