Do you use Saxon? Did you know the back story about it? Here is the original Saxon video I made- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EMPpqnoytlM.html

It is so interesting to hear from a teacher who really cares and how much that makes a difference it makes in students lives. I don’t see that in the school my son has gone to, it was just a job for them and the teachers were just going through the motion to get the pay check. I am now homeschooling my younger kids.

We call it fluency. As a school teacher and homeschool mom, I feel it's one of the most important skill. It's why the Robinson curriculum is correct in having kids learn the number facts

Wow! That was an incredibly interesting interview, especially what he said about interleaving and automaticity of skills. I love that he debunked the popular home ed school of thought that over-learning is somehow bad. We often hear the it referred to as, "drill and kill" where as he says, "over-learning is good!" Timed written tests are powerful tool to help children build long term memory and speed in order free up the mind for more complex problem solving. And when he quoted John Saxon saying that the power of achievement in the quantative disciplines means that there's nothing one can do....woah, that was powerful...! Amazing interview. Left me with a lot of food for thought.

The Brenda story made me cry. 💜💜💜 I only had one teacher like him and he was my English teacher. Mr Johnson. I loved math and hated English so much I doodled math equation s in my English note book. until my 11th grade English teacher actually TAUGHT me English and the history behind all the weird poems that made no sense to me before. I memorized those sonnets and can recite them today because I understand what the writer was saying.

Excellent interview! Thank you, Karen, for arranging this interview. It was very interesting and informative. We are long-time Saxon users. My oldest took the SAT in March and scored in the 93rd percentile in Math, and she's not a math person. I attribute it to a lot of prayer and the Saxon math curriculum. Thanks again!

Congrats! I'm very new to this, came across the history of Saxon video that Karen put out 2 years ago, which brought me to this video. Was wondering what Saxon math you used? I have a 6th grader but I know she talked about using certain editions?
@stlilymov4
@stlilymov4 3 года назад
@@MK-yh7ed We use the 3rd edition. I think Karen uses the 2nd edition. I purchased both the 2nd and 3rd edition of Saxon 5/4 and compared them. The 3rd edition has Warm-up exercises and Investigations which are deeper, hands-on exercises. My kids have always loved the Investigations. I compared a couple of lessons in the 2nd and 3rd editions and I found that the wording in the lessons was the same except the 3rd edition had a few more words or sentences explaining the concept. I don't think you can go wrong with either edition. The key is prayer and consistency. Hope this helps:)

That is fantastic and very encouraging to me. My daughter is 13 and does not perceive herself to be good at math, but she is very bright and has an amazing mind for science. I am switching to Saxon this year so that we can lay a strong foundation and change that perception. Do you mind sharing how far your daughter got into the curriculum? What was the highest level she finished?

When he says 'don't skip any books" I wonder what to do with a child switching to Saxon from a hodgepodge of Math Education.. Should we start at 45 and try to knock out the first 2 books quickly before moving on to his grade level? Or just jump in to 76 and hope to fill in the gaps as they come up?
@ourhouse
@ourhouse 3 года назад
Have them take the Saxon placement test and start at whatever book it recommends. There is one on the RC order page under Saxon books and you can probably find it online just searching for it.
@nbobrick17
@nbobrick17 2 года назад
Should I start using the math facts warm up sheets even if my child isn't done memorizing them yet? I didn't organize her cards according to your math fact chart that you made (which I wish I did). I just took chunks of the rc cards and mixed all the operations, so I have no idea "where" she's at so far.
@ourhouse
@ourhouse 2 года назад
In that case you might want to wait until she’s mastered them all and just add them as a warm up before she starts her math 54 lesson.

Does anyone know what he’s referring to when he mentions “review sets”? Is that just the regular problem set?
@ourhouse
@ourhouse 3 года назад
Around what time stamp? Each lesson breaks down to a recommended facts practice prior to starting, a few practice problems of the new material introduced, and then a problem set of about 25 problems made up of review material with the new material together.

Which tests are ‘timed written,’ is this the warm up facts tests or the tests which are after every five lessons, and If so what’s the time goal here for the tests which are after every 5 lessons. Id my child, hypothetically speaking as just starting, spends X time, say 45 mins, perhaps that shows he’s struggling, as opposed to a time of 20 mins or so? X
