Twenty One Pilots songs are confusing, but you can hear the meaning of every single one in this video!
I love Twenty One Pilots more than the average person, and I'm an adjunct English instructor at a large Virginia university, so I thought I'd apply my literary analysis skills to every Twenty One Pilots song that there is and explain them all for you! I talk about the meanings of the lyrics from Self-Titled, Regional at Best, Vessel, Blurryface, and a few singles.
This explanation video took me a while to film because I had to memorize every song and meaning in order and then film it while walking. Apparently, I'm kind of out of shape because I kept losing my breath and having to start over, but I did make it and was able to explain all of the songs.

To the people who are skeptical as to whether or not so many of TØP's songs are written to or about God, I want to explain that his lyrics are intentionally subtle and open to interpretation (as he explains in Kitchen Sink, Clear, and Message Man), but according to his father (who has been friends with my parents since college, and has attended my church a few times), almost any time that Tyler is addressing lyrics to an ambiguous "You", he is referring to God. He is okay with songs meaning different things to different people, but the heart of his music is his faith.

i am not a christian, and i struggle to believe in god. but, i just love how i can find my own meaning of their songs and relate to them, even if it isn't the actual intended meaning. it has helped me so much. i love that they didn't stay in their lane, and went wherever they wanted to otherwise we wouldn't have this type of music. (I'm sorry this was the first thing that came to my mind and i thought it was funny.)

Vessel starts with "Ode to sleep" where he tries to sleep, and ends with "Truce" where he says the night is over, which might mean the entire Truce album was Tyler's thoughts through a single night

It’s so obvious now. How did I miss some of these meaning? I guess there is a definitive meaning, which is these, but in the end, you can see it in your own way and however it relates to you. Awesome video dude and made me realise what some of my favourite songs truly mean to Tyler.

What if, in The Pantaloon, Tyler is talking to the same person who killed themself in Taken by Sleep? I know Tyler talks about how he's taken by sleep, but it's about a person who killed themself, putting Tyler in a room of depression he can't escape.

The Pop Song Professor I know this is like a year old but I have different opinions on the songs Air Catcher and Trapdoor. Air Catcher - I think Tyler was personifying sin/satan as an attractive woman rather than the focus actually being a woman. Here, sin/satan is trying to seduce him into loving sinning, falling. This would explain the lyric "I won't fall in love with fallin'" especially considering he was just stating in Fall Away that he doesn't want to fall away. He also tries to tell sin off by saying that it would beat the Moon in a pretty contest, but he didn't even notice the Moon to begin with so it's not much of a compliment. Trapdoor - In my mind it's about a man who is the subject of gossip, in which everyone else believes. All the stuff Tyler says at the very beginning of the song (he pretends he's okay. . .) about this man are some of the things that were gossiped about this man. The part of the song where Tyler says, "finish this waste of a life" are basically how other people are treating him based on the gossip said. I always think of the old man in Home Alone when I hear this song, that's probably where I got this idea from. These are very loose arguments, but if I want so lazy I could go into more depth. lol “wrong” is a strong word, especially considering tyler is so pro personal interpretation. i can see where he’s coming from on all of them (although ruby was a cop out and not an analysis at all), so his interpretations must not be so off the mark.

so it's not really a cover but not an original either, it's sampled meaning the background vocals were already a thing but Tyler (and Josh? I don't know if Josh was in the band when Tyler worked on this) put drums and piano on it and obviously wrote his verses. if you say that's a cover then HeavyDirtySoul is a cover too

I like how Tyler’s lyrics are versatile so that we can apply our own meaning as well. I am and always have been agnostic so my struggle with religion has been limited so I can still find a little meaning in that aspect of his music but I can also apply more meaning to his songs that are unique to me and my experiences and I think that’s pretty neat.

i believe that the whole eye closing is a double entendre meaning the evil eye of dun closing and blurry face sleeping, considering almost all of their songs have some kond of bad meaning like depression and losing faith in god perhaps the next album will be about the good parts of life the "good eye of dun". but hey thats just a theory, A SONG THEORY

Am I the only one that doesn’t see how self-titled is so religious? Especially in March to the sea. I see in that song, Tyler describing society and how we all seem to go along with what’s seen as “trendy” and “cool” and he does that too. Until he realises with the help of someone else that there’s more to it than that, but he also shows how easy it is to fall back into a “March to the sea” once again.

Tyler is very very poetic (obviously) so everyone takes it a different way, however, as most people know, he is very religious (especially in self-titled, so it’d make sense) What I think it means is that everyone is either, learning that religion isn’t real (in most public schools, or by parents themselves) and they’re all going down the same path of sin that will pretty much lead then straight to hell. Tyler joins that line to fit in, but he hears a voice, possibly an angel or Jesus himself, telling him to believe, and leave that line. It’s a back and forth battle. I could go more into detail but this comment is already pretty long. But feel free to take it however you want. ❤️

I can see where you are coming from except there is one line that really confirms the religious aspect. The line is "follow me" which clearly alludes to Jesus telling others to stop and "follow me". The rest of the song talks about Jesus revealing the faults of the world, and the end when he falls back in line seems to mean that even when Christians become saved, Christians have to still live in the world and are still tempted by things.

I interpreted March to the Sea being about depression/suicide and struggling with suicidal thoughts "Heaven forbid they see you cry" Some people suffering from depression don't want their depression to be apprent, so in this case, they look down "And then we fall asleep" Sleep can be used as a euphemism for death "And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase:" Depression isn't always intense sadness, but can also be a lack of emotion "'This line's the only way'" Suicidal people often feel like suicide is the only option "'Follow me instead'" Could be wrong here, but I heard this as his will to survive talking. This will and his suicidal thoughts are what cause the "wages of war" and eventually, after seriously contemplating suicide and walking into the sea, his will to survive saves him this time and takes him farther back in the line.

I think I noticed something in car radio, when he says "I ponder of something great" these thoughts are coming to him in the silence, maybe his pondering is wondering about afterlife or something after death. Maybe his podering of something terrifying is the doubting of his faith, a second guess on what might happen after you die, I have had moments like this and it hurts the hell out of my head and drives me crazy, its a very violent thought that messes with you, and sometimes this comes to me at night or whenever there isn't music quiet is violent. Though its mainly about dark thoughts I feel it has more faith to it then people realize
