For Windows PCs that were created before ACPI came into play (such as PCs you needed to turn on with a switch), they had a 'shutdown complete' screen. This video will show every single Windows 'shutdown complete' screen since Windows Chicago up to Windows 11.

Yeah. My Windows 95/98 computer has a switch instead of a button. So you have to manual shut it down every time. Feels really nostalgic. This is why I love retro computing and gaming :P

Exactly mine had a control panel. I had to flip a switch for each on the control panel Main power, monitor, tower, peripherals. But for some reason I couldn’t just flip the switch for the main power. I had to do each individually wonder why

@@DZac I tried setting up Windows 7 without ACPI and it told me that it needs it so unless you have a modified version that removes the requirement, I think this might be a lie

That WinME Dev Beta one is too wordy and looks like more of a BSOD error than a shutdown screen. I think they dropped this because there's no way to convert their existing PCs to ACPI-capable.

Basically old computers could not turn off by themselves at the time because of limited technology, so users had to manually switch off the computer. The "safe to shutdown" feature prevented system files from becoming corrupted.

Old computers didn't have ACPI. ACPI means a computer can actually turn off by itself. Also there were plenty of computers that had to have a on/off switch as well.

It does show up if you enable it in Group Policy. This should work on Windows 10 and 11 as well: windowsreport.com/safe-turn-off-computer/

Honestly Windows needs to have a similar feature implemented these days. For some reason, if you have fast startup enabled, it'll fade the screen out seconds before it powers the system off. This doesn't happen if you have fast startup disabled.

Nope…. VMs turn off when you shut down from the start menu. They turned the feature back on from the services menu.

I think it's the subliminal thought that you can turn your computer the "unsafe" way and something will go wrong edit: the win98 is just creepy. the black screen and the text with no sounds just make it look like you werent supposed to see this

I hated it in VMs where NT 4 wouldn't be able to be turned off with ACPI, unlike windows 95+ where it does turn off (weird as I thought 95 couldn't turn off with ACPI).

Your virtualization software *may* have detected the "safe to shutdown" message and turned off the VM, I don't recall windows 95 being able to shut off the computer.

What was the last build of Windows that was able to be setup on a machine without ACPI? Windows Vista cutted off support for computers with no ACPI

@@carlosbarreto475 Build 5001 doesn't require it, but that was so early on that for all intents and purposes it's Windows Server 2003 SP1 RC with a XP Pro SKU.
