Maria Shriver is one of the most intelligent, well-known, and beloved women in America.
I’m honored to call her my friend and im so grateful to have her on my show for a wide-ranging exchange about:
Incredible life lessons, personal growth and development, reflections on family, self awareness, why we often behave the way we do... and an extended discussion about her work as an advocate for advancing research and a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Maria has accomplished so much in her life. She has maintained a high public profile as a member of the Kennedy family, a producer, network television journalist, and as the former first lady of California. She is also a multiple Emmy award winner, best-selling author, philanthropist, and women’s rights activist, among many other notable achievements.
You’ll want to hear what Maria has to say about creating self-confidence and identity, and how you can apply the lessons she has learned to your own life.
Maria also reveals some unique insights about what it’s like to live in a famous family, and the dynamics of what it’s like when every one of your relatives is a high achiever.
If you’re a woman, Maria speaks directly to you on the need for feminine empowerment and strength, balanced by kindness, compassion, sexuality, and overcoming stereotypes that have challenged women in the workplace for decades.
We also have a thought-provoking discussion about who we want to be in life, and how our perceptions and what we value changes as we get older. It’s a question all of us should ask ourselves frequently.
Perhaps the most important part of our talk centers around Maria’s work with the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement, a group she founded to raise awareness about women’s increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
If you or somebody you know suffers from Alzheimer’s, you must listen Maria has to say on this subject.
00:00 Intro

5:49 The Power of The Pause

17:23 The nuance feminine energy has in the topic of personal development
21:32 Who we want to be is important at every stage of our lives
23:53 What does Maria used to believe that she no longer believes?
26:13 The type of person Ed & Maria wants to be now versus before

48:55 Normal memory problems due to aging vs Alzheimer's

I too am 50 years old. And I have a printed photo of Jesus drawing in the sand as he thinks on the question presented to him while in the presences of the adulterous woman. I have that photo as a reminder that I want to be a person who pauses rather than reacts. Funny how many things I have gotten better at doing over the years. However, this task.....I am finding it difficult. But will keep trying. Best to you on your attempt Ed.

I got frustrated with a slower driver on my way home from work not so long ago. I paused and asked myself, "What am I in a hurry for?". Revelation, you gotta love it!

Who doesn't love Maria. I follow her Sunday paper. The reflection on self confidence really hit home for me and deserving the success and achievements from hard work and work ethic. I am in a male dominated industry....what she shares about strength ....really love her.

Wow, what an amazing interview! "The power of the pause"-just being and not doing. That is so strong! I am definitely THE ONE in my family but not monetarily rather humanitarily.I broke the cycle of silence and shame and I truely believe that I'm very brave to live my life as I choose to. I love Maria's: always checking in who is running your show? Is it your inner 6 year old child? Who do you want to be? We are different people at different stages of our lives. I'm in such a hurry but where am I rushing to? I liked her mother's saying "Life is a marathon not a sprint". What resonated with me the most that her children/family are in the first place even though she is such a successful woman in so many fields. My children have always been in the first place and I am most proud of bringing them up well to be good caring human beings. From this interview I learned about the whole connection between menopause, low estrogen and Alzheimer's which was new to me. Thanks for this interview Ed and Maria! God bless both of you! I will definitely listen to this again! #MAXOUT from Israel

Wow that was great! My grandmother passed from Alzheimer’s. We had to put her in a nursing home because my mom was single and worked full time to makes ends meet. She also had to go to the nursing home Before and after work to care for my grandma because the nursing home did not have enough staff to care for her properly. It’s very sad all around. And I love that she does work with special Olympics and best buddies because my daughter is envolved in both. This definitely hit home. Thanks for doing this !

@@EdMylettShow The entire video was great! However, the part where she shared her struggles with confidence hit home. I too grew up in a high testosterone environment with three brothers, and Italian/Lebanese catholic family. Im 44, single for 6 years now, and have two daughters full time. Its a struggle everyday to stay focused mentally for myself and for my business, but also as the example for my daughters. I never want to dictate to my girls who they should or should not be. But I always want them to be true to themselves. There are a lot more ideas in this world and things are accepted that were not accepted for me as a young girl growing up. So its difficult for my mind to grasp understanding. I feel I wasn't always allowed to express my true self and I always did what was expected of me as a young female. And well, long story short...finding a balance between kindness and healthy boundaries while also staying true to myself is a HUGE struggle. Being an example as a mom and an individual (positive influence) in the world, has its difficulties to say the least. Lol (Sorry not much of a short story. Lol)

This was very informative! I think her perspective of working your way up in any field you embark in. The perspective of learning each aspect and building along the journey building self confidence and knowledge verses the quick path. Pace that is secure verses quick Arrival. Her concept of pause and timing. Thinking verses just action. Always unconditional love! #maxout

Thoroughly enjoyed this convo. Thank you! At the same time, I was surprised when Maria mentioned "sexiness" in her list of feminine attributes or strengths. To me, the idea that a female person is supposed to be sexy is a hangover from the old days of "a woman has to please her man." I don't expect sexiness to be an attribute in men. It's even been my experience that men who focus on their "sexy" quotient are actually quite emotionally insecure. So can we drop this pressure to be sexy, please, and keep it between the privacy of a couple in their bedroom... or wherever?

Well : women are more pre- occupied with personal appearance and household cleaning than men. What these two both have in common is an inordinate use of chemical products. And these products are most often made with constituents that are corrosive, poisonous and toxic when inhaled. Who knows what damage they do over long periods of time.
