In this video, I explain the esoteric approach (inspired by Leo Strauss) that Allan Bloom takes in interpreting Plato's Republic, with various examples.
For my own reflections on this, see my followup video:

Plato was one great mind, it is an honor to follow in his footsteps. You do a fine job drawing out the subtleties, and raising important points. Listen to me, you who are a true student of philosophy. The key to understanding Plato is understanding the knowledge he himself had, but is all but lost by our modern world. One really ought read The Ra Material. The topic of _densities,_ for one, correlates precisely to the divided line, the cave, and so on. The allegory is more literal than one might think. I leave you to discover if what I claim is true opinion with an account, or, a snare. The discussion of the two paths is central, too. Go forth! Someday I hope to make a presentation on this matter half as good as yours. Thank you.

I have always had this feeling that Plato wrote Socrates to be this sort of Don Quixote type character, in the sense that its absurd to try and embody perfect ideals in an imperfect world, but have always been dissuaded from truly believing that because how serious and literal professors and people speak of him and the views his character is espousing. Just like Cervantes I believe Plato is pointing out the tension between this desire for perfect mental models we generate, so to speak, and the impossibility of actualizing those models in the natural world. I feel like they are missing the joke. Do you think this was the intention or am I just dumb lol?

I would largely agree with you. Plato is incredibly playful; I think there's so much delightful irony in the dialogues, and not just in the obvious places. Only, I do think the historical Socrates was really like he's portrayed by Plato, more or less (his character is similar enough in Xenophon, after all). Plato had the luck to have a living model of this type of character, which he could then use in all his writing. And I would also insist there's a core of seriousness to Plato, beyond all the irony.

Due to their desire to remain in complete control over Athens, the Thirty sought to exile or kill anyone who outwardly opposed their regime. Socrates remained in the city through this period, which caused the public to associate him with the Thirty and may have contributed to his eventual death sentence, Wikipedia

The “What is Accomplished” section sits well - The video I watched before this was on how the “New Atheists” were midwits.
