Thank you im a uneducated construction worker but love history. Started with american than learned about the enlightenment. In europe and know greek and Roman. Listened go the republic a couple times this really helped me break it down. And the same problems plagued politics for thousands of years simply amazing. But i feel like our politicans in alot of ways were better educated decades ago.

Nonsense; I would not trust a person if he did not have enemies. Having enemies indicates that you have a strong position on moral or political matters.
@jmhdsn
@jmhdsn 2 года назад
I thought it was interesting because it seemed to imply that your “enemy” is defined by yourself. The person may not have your best interests in mind, or may be actively working against you, but you have the ability to contextualize their actions in relation to yourself, and it doesn’t have to be adversarial. Easier said than done, though.

I think you’d like Pierre grimes’s lectures on Plato. Type his name then type “Parmenides” right after. He has dozens if not hundreds of lectures here. What’s the difference? Pierre is a mystic and thinks Plato was on to something. So, he makes the best argument he can for him. Whereas, as good as he is, sugrue is an academic. I don’t know that he actually bought in to the transcendence of the GOOD-ONE. but I’m just guessing. Regardless, Pierre Grimes is pretty good.

Here's the thing. Philosophy and other social sciences can be percieved by a beginner. For some bizarre reason it's considered like "high class", like something you need a lot of degrees to understand. Natural science ok, a beginner will only be able to get a "popular science lecture for non scientists". But social science? You can walk into a pholosophy course in an Ivy League university and be as good as the other students. You'll have a problem in a low grade level college if you try to understand what Calculus II is about of course. But philosophy? History? It can be done. If you have the time (and money?) try to get into a university for such a degree. I assure you, you'll be among the best of the class.

Since virtue is knowledge for Socrates, the benefit that you owe to those who like you and to those who don't like you... the benefit you owe to all men.... Is education. So the point of Socratic interaction, of Socratic dialogue is the improvement of the people he is speaking to..." Professor Sugrue, thank you for literally practicing what you preach. When I re-read the republic, and right there in the beginning, it’s there; I realized that what Plato thought to be the ideal city-state, was a simple one, wherein everyone had just enough for their needs. And so worked hard enough and long enough to supply those needs, and no more. Meaning he described the Just city early on. But this was called a city only good enough for pigs. The whole bit on the 3 parts of the city, comes when you remove justice from it; to an extent removed. Where lies and force and misinformation are needed to “make it work”. Make what work? “A luxurious city” Then I realized that there are a lot of people who give me shit about my liking plato, because Plato does talk about some tyrannical tendencies. But now I see, that’s only “needed”, if I can say it’s needed, when Justice is removed. In other words, when the proper arrangements of the parts, and relations of each to each other are removed, and replaced with relations that are incommensurate and disproportionate or unsuited for the members of the whole.
