If you're going to pretend like it's the first time you've heard it, you both shouldn't nod your heads in time and let it be obvious you know the beat before it even really starts... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Ez5-fxLKj0.html

Wow you are really an idiot. What fun would that be. Reacting to a Allan Holdsworth video knowing the song? Why not do something people actually watch? It's called musical intuition you complete idiot. I have been listening to Holdsworth music and prog for years and we are both musicians. Do us and the people who love this channel a big favor and stay off!

@@janderson2000 If we react to a song we have heard before we actually say. Check songs like Watchtower - Aquanet etc. So no. The only one that looks like an idiot is you with your unnecessary speculation. If I wanted to lie about a song I would do Hotel California that's going to get us thousands of views. Also we don't make any money with these videos. I pinned your comment so people can see just how stupid you are but I'll take it as a compliment that I know enough theory to fool someone to thinking I've heard it before.

@@NicknLex LOL such denial...and anger from you. lol Thanks for the pin. It let's people know how fake you are. BTW, the only thing you had to say was, "yeah, I heard the intro but that's all" to explain you knowing the beat BEFORE it even started...." ...but you weren't that bright. Just denial. lol How embarrassing for you. Holdsworth fans aren't as easily fooled... And if you can't make any money from having 37K subscribers....that's another issue. In my opinion, Jimmy Johnson was Alan's greatest musical foil. He disappeared for several years, then came back. He is very cordal, great guy! That core was Alan, Jimmy, and Chad.

I've been playing guitar for 40 years now and am a huge Holdsworth fan. I remember way back in the day that the great Eddie Van Halen cited Alan as big influence. No higher praise. Outside of guitarists/musicians, almost no one knows Holdsworth's music which is so unfortunate. Thank you and kudos to you for reviewing one of the greatest modern musicians to bless us his amazing body of work.

In the last two concerts of Virgil's at Bird's Basement, Melbourne he included many of Allan's songs out of respect for the man. Talking with him I found he had a great admiration and was very sad about his passing. I sponsored the Earth album on the now defunct 'Pledge' platform as many other enthusiasts did....I very much doubt Virgil would block you from playing Allan's music.

I just looked, and this song has been on a RU-vid channel called "Nick from Earth" since October - so you're probably safe (unless that other Nick has a special arrangement with V.Donati.) Also check out all the playing Allan did on Chad Wackerman's albums, and the 1997 release he did with Yngwie Malmsteen bandmates Anders and Jens Johansson called "Heavy Machinery".

I was fortunate to see Allan in a small club in San Diego in 2014 or '15. His phrasing and emotion just pour out of his soul and through his guitar. Like many "geniuses" he always seemed dissatisfied with his playing, never good enough. I hope he at least had a glimmer of the joy he brought to his listeners. I first heard him on UK, and immediately became a fan. Didn't he say he originally wanted to play saxophone, but had no facility, yet understood the guitar better? His stabs at violin playing (eg "Forever Until Sunday" from Bruford's One of a Kind album) are enlightening, and his occasional acoustic guitar (which he felt didn't allow his style to work) are brilliant. His musical brain was just on another level than us mere mortals. He is sorely missed, but he left some incredible art for us to experience.

Hi Nick and Alexia! I've been following your reaction videos for a long time and I think it's great how you two young people enjoy the prog and fusion music from the 70s and beyond! It was through you, Nick, that I became aware of Allan Holdsworth and only then did I realize what a world-class musician he is. In connection with Allan Holdsworth I would therefore like to draw your attention to an album by the 70ies band GONG, especially the album "GAZEUSE!" - which, by the way, is only called in Europe so, in the USA it was released under the name "EXPRESSO" - and so the album also has different covers in the US and in Europe! So, Allan Holdsworth plays on the Gazeuse aka Expresso album!! Although I know the album since 1976, I only noticed this after hearing about Holdsworth through you. Gong is best known as a spacey hippie troupe, but this changed after Daevid Allen left around 1975. From the previous line-up, saxophonist Didier Malherbe and drummer Pierre Moerlen remained. Under Moerlen's leadership, the strange, spacey mysticism of the early "gong" was a thing of the past. Instead, fine, percussion-heavy jazz rock was the order of the day, as can be heard on the Gazeuse album. Allan Holdsworth gave a guest appearance on this album after a short stint on "Soft Machine". I would like to draw your attention to this album Gazeuse aka Expresso! In the title track "Expresso" or in the song "Night Illusion" you can immerse yourself in the virtuoso playing of Allan Holdsworth. Maybe it's even enough for one of your reaction videos ... #nicknlexrequest: Try 'Expresso' or 'Night Illusion'. (This Album is not on Spotify!) Kind regards from Switzerland

I pledged for this music to be made and waited over a year for it to arrive, as part of the Tales from the Vault album. Listening to it again, especially when Allan began his solo every hair on my arms and back stood up and tears stung my eyes. 🥲 Nick, you explained Allan's approach here perfectly. It's so much more poignant to know that he died the following year. And this was the last time that I saw him in Leeds, in Yorkshire (the next city over from Allan's home town Bradford) in December 2007. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qxx9iAJdhco.html

This wasn't the last recording Allan did. Earth was from 2015 and he did two tracks in 2017 on MSM Schmidt's "Life" album - Trance & Vista: Very worth looking into - Virgil is on Vista and so many great players on the album: Jimmy Haslip (also the producer); Dave Wreckl, Scott Kinsey - tons of others. I first heard it over the house system at The Baked Potato and Holdsworth was unmistakable! I also saw Virgil this June playing with Bunny Brunnel's CAB just before he left to move to Italy.

Hey Nick, don't forget Tony MacAlpine in Planet X as well, for the 1st 2 studio and 1 live album :). A question for *Virgil Donati* if he sees this; Was Holdsworth doing the "Keyboard" parts (some were obviously him)? As he used various (synth) effects and the "SynthAxe" possibly, as some of the textures sounded like the album "Sand". I am total agreement with you Nick about the sound and composition, yet I really loved it because you hear "textures" and layers in the background you don't usually hear on Allan's own compositions. Virgil is a MONSTER on drums, and those off-beats and poly-rhythms are insane! While he keeps time hitting the cymbal that Lexi picked-up on, she has a great ear! If Virgil, or Marco Minnemann, or Peter Wildoer (my personal fave, but my 3 fave auditions) became Dream Theaters drummer, it would be a very different sound vs the Mike Portnoy era . . . I would have loved that. It would re-invent the band. I got to meet Virgil at the famous _tiny_ venue "The Baked Potato", and who played literally in-front of me 5 feet away! He was super approachable and said; "Yeah, this place is our 2nd home" :). - That was great! Going to watch the video you guys suggested! Another "shot" to you Nick, from your Holdsworth Brother \m/.

Here's what Allan said about this tune in 2015: "I decided to do an arrangement of Virgil’s tune Earth. I found it compelling so I re arranged the tune (not the form that remained the same) just a little re harmonization here and there. So there you have it. The other version is very different as you will hear. In fact I think I arranged myself out of it because of all the cheese I put behind the guitar solo first (that I had to play around)." I read this as Allan doing all of the synth parts.

Mr Donati - who does some awesome drumming here, by the way - could do a copyright claim so that monetization will go to him (or the label). That way we can all continue to enjoy a very happy Marley in the background 😃 and Lex reacting to Nick getting totally carried away by Holdsworth's guitar 😄
@NicknLex

All artists do copyright claims so all money from all videos we do go to the artist, but even so, they can go an extra step and give a "strike" to avoid their content being available for free. Marley will be happy regardless, but we would be sad! haha :) Glad you enjoyed!

I realise that this is somewhat off genre posting here, but I remembered a recommendation for another superb instrumental: Earthquake by Uli John Roth (1979), who I consider to be the first modern electric guitar shredder. I know you've done Sails of Charon by Scorpions, and this track takes those soloing ideas and takes them to the stratosphere!
