The first time I heard Allan Holdsworth was on the Tony Williams Lifetime album "Million Dollar Legs." This album came out in 1976. My friend played the album for me, when it was still new, and my life was changed, forever. It was the most amazing guitar playing I had ever heard. His solo at the end of the song "Either End of August" from the Bruford album "'Feels Good To Me" is my absolute all-time favorite by AH. It is SO filled with emotion, that there are times when it is almost too overwhelming to listen to. Steve Howe is a nose behind Holdsworth as my favorite guitarist. I know that he is one of your favorites too. BOTH are giants!! I know there are people who think otherwise, but to me, Holdsworth was the greatest guitar player of all time. I was truly grief stricken by his passing, and I don't know if I will ever get over the loss. Thank you Nick and Lex, for the Holdsworth, Steely Dan, Yes, and for all of the other videos of performers that we share a love for. OH! And I am glad to see that none of your things were actually STOLEN!! April Fools Day is WAY too stressful, for me...

Alan is a wonderful guitarist, the bass player blew me away too. Absolutely excellent jazz fusion pouring into my ears... Have not heard this particular cut before... Just incredible. Another player you think ... "How many fingers does this dude have?"

The ethereal synthaxe underpinning Skúli Sverrisson's bass....how sublime! The opening with Steve Hunt's piano is also special. Then we are treated with a masterclass of fusion guitar that I doubt many players could even contemplate to try. A purity of complex chords and melody that just blows you away. Thank you Nick & Lex.

Nick, I am in possession of a concert performed at The Old Town Bar&Grill in my hometown of Eureka, California recorded on DAT transferred to Maxell Metal cassette transferred to 2 cdr’s and the obstacle is only the fact I don’t know how to upload it to RU-vid so you can hear it. It sounds amazing considering how it was recorded literally on the lap of the owner. This was on the Metal Fatigue Tour in 1985. After the show I shook his hand which was pretty special. I have seen Allan 3 times.with his band and once in UK.

This is just one of many examples of Allan's amazing body of work. Not for nothing was he so revered by other giants such as Zappa and Lane. Allan was a force of nature. To him the music was everything. To reduce his playing to technique, as many do is missing the point. His whole approach was about making the guitar do things to support his music concepts. He was forever searching and looking to translate the ideas within his mind. The results were deeply personal and idiosyncratic master works. His work did not fit easy classification and it was always a financial struggle. But thank goodness he was able to create such great music despite the narrow confines of the music industry.

There have been a few new live albums just released. Every one of them is absolutely stunning. When I first heard Allan’s music I couldn’t make heads or tails of it. It was completely alien sounding. It took a couple years to my brain to crack the code as a listener. Cracking the code as a player is another challenge altogether, virtually impossible to figure out pre-RU-vid era. His chords and solos confused the ear and brain in such a unique way. I’ve never heard music so utterly beautiful and indescribable. None of my peers, family or friends could appreciate this music. I was alone in my love for his music for at least 20 years. Over 30 years of listening to him and much of the world still hasn’t caught up to him yet. The improvisational nature of his music makes his music sound like a living, moving and breathing organic being. No one ever came close for me. This song and his music is part of my soul. The build up in the solo at right about 13:55 in can pull tears from my eyes. I can count on one hand how many musicians can do this to me…

Lately I've seen quite a few people reacting to a prog giant, who will say something like: How do I not know this already? I feel that way about this. Although I long knew of Soft Machine, Gong and UK, and loved their work, I didn't connect it with Allan. But now I have, and I thank y'all. Those Coltrane runs and bestial wail screaming from his guitar was transcendent, other-worldly. Other players were in the groove too. As a North Carolinian, I know that while no one can replace John Coltrane (or Roberta Flack), emulation is always welcome. "Love, Devotion, Surrender" with Santana, John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham, also pays homage to 'Trane, and is also at this high level of music. Gracias et Danke schoen! PS Have y'all done Gong? They are really groovy.

What a solo ! I don't know if Nick knows this but Rick Beato has an interview about Allan with keyboardist Steve Hunt. Drummer Gary Husband later played keyboards for John McLaughlin. I became aware of Allan Holdsworth in 1976, when I saw the Velvet Darkness album (which he hated) in a record store, and picked it up because the album cover talked about how George Benson heard him in a club, and got his record company to record the album. The cover also mentioned him playing with Tony Williams, so after checking out Believe It I had to research his earlier stuff. There was no internet at that time, but I guess there were articles in guitar magazines that listed who he had played with.
@NicknLex

I have not seen Rick Beato interview yet. I love those players. I knew about Allan trying to get his first album out of print too. I like it. All of his solo albums are just too good. Even his later stuff like flat tire. If I had to choose for a desert island album it would be sixteen men of tain.

@@NicknLex I was unsure of exactly how much of his old stuff you knew, so I was going to try to surprise you by putting an Allan Holdsworth violin solo on an upcoming marathon, (you might know me more as RG), but it could be months before I can beat everybody to the punch for requests, and I took that piece out of the marathon lineup because I just don't like what the other musicians are playing behind him. You can tell it's him by his note choices. Just in case you haven't heard it : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ibOkGqUWGoY.html There isn't much Holdsworth I don't like throughout his career, but one of my favorites is "City Nights" from Secrets.

So my suggestion in the email description was; "Prelude/Ruhkukah" as this is the _typical_ wild fusion side of Allan. And Gary Husband on the Drums just as wild and all over the drums. Tullio, Postlude, and House of Mirrors were my next choices, but I can understand why you chose this one, as it doesn't overwhelm most listeners. Ruhkukah is probably my fave track from Holdsworth, but the "Prelude" was the _set-up_ for the next track (Rukukah) ;). - MORE Holdsworth please!

If you want to hear and see a jazz musician of the highest caliber we highly recommend to listen to and watch this live video of Barbara Dennerlein and her band (Mitch Watkins on guitar who plays the 1st solo, Rick Keller on sax who plays the 2nd solo, Tony Reedus on drums who plays the 4th solo and Barbara Dennerlein on modified/midified Hammond B-3 who as always does the job of two musicians at the same time (keyboarder and bass player), although in this video you could actually say she does the job of three musicians at the same time even because she first does an organ solo, then she does a piano solo (actually organ too, but she has the sound of piano, vibraphone, trumpet and, for the bass pedals, acoustic bass sampled into her organ), and then she does call and response with herself on organ and piano, while all the time she plays a really complex and fast bass line on the pedals which she also varies a lot. The video is from a 1992 TV-appearance; Barbara was 27 years old then. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tsW3V4rrRsw.html There are lots of great videos of her on RU-vid in various formations, from solo performances up to performances with big band; in some of them she solos on a pipe organ, in some she does bass pedal solos, but in all these videos she is brilliant. Barbara played with a plethora of some of the greatest jazz musicians around the world. She has always done her own thing except for the short time she was a member of Friedrich Gulda's Paradise Band. There were 3 great keyboarders in that band at the same time; besides Barbara and Friedrich Gulda (who is best known as a classical pianist but also played jazz duos and trios with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul, who was the 3rd keyboarder in the Paradise Band).

I'm from New Orleans and I saw Allan Holdsworth on the Synthaxe tour. Prior to the show, he was sitting at the bar, and, literally, drank a six-pack of bottled beer in 10 minutes! He proceeded to walk on to the stage and did things with the guitar/Synthaxe that I have never seen any other human do. ive seen Genesis, Yes, Al DiMeola, Paco Delucia and John McGlaughlin, and countless other guitarists, and Holdsworth is the KING! You guys should explore the Todd Rundgren catalog as well. Respond if you want any suggestions in that realm. Love you two!

One more quote that I know you'll enjoy reading. This is from an article, and I'll try to include the link for you. "No better way to start the album than one of prog rock’s classic pieces of music, a 13-minute suite composed by Jobson. The first part, sharing the suite’s name In The Dead of Night, is absolutely one of the best album openers I know. A great synth riff, Bruford’s fills on the roto toms, the irresistible 7/4 groove, Wetton’s lyrics and vocals. Jobson on the piece: “In The Dead of Night was probably the song that came together the quickest and easiest, which is probably why it became U.K.’s signature song. I brought the piece in as a virtually complete three-part suite-mostly written out on sheet music-but it turned out to be one of those songs that everyone just started playing and it immediately worked.” The highlight of the song is Holdsworth’s unforgettable guitar solo that starts at 3:08. Bruford was full of praise of that solo: “Allan delivered a knockout blow on the first cut, 94 seconds of liquid passion married to a blinding technical facility that was to go down in the annals of rock guitar history. It remains one of the most perfectly formed, intelligently paced, and brilliantly executed guitar bliss you are ever likely to hear.”" musicaficionado.blog/2019/03/13/u-k-s-debut-album/

Non Brewed Condiment was the first track of Allan Holdsworth i listened to. That was like being struck by lightning. His music has changed the way i listen to other music profoundly. His technical ability on guitar and synthaxxe is unparalleled, but that's not the most amazing feature. It's the emotion in his playing. There's so much heartache and longing in his lines and chords. He always surrounded himself with brilliant musicians that enhanced and complemented his music. In the process he created music that is timeless and as vibrant as the time it was recorded. When Allan left this planet, the world became a colder and less colorful place

Hello again. I have watched a number of your reactions. Enjoyed them enormously. I just wanted to say if you're unaware of Loggins & Messina, then you need to check out a couple of their albums. Full Sail and Mother Lode. They had a killer band.

Hi Guys! I would like to suggest another guitarist to both of you, if you don't know him yet... I think you should try the song "Blue" from Terje Rypdal, from his album "Blue". It is simpler that Allan Holdsworth, but I find every note of that track so full of maitrise... and I am sure that you will love the melody, and the overall sound of the track. A great introduction to Terje Rypdal.

Just amazing! And a great way to break in that shirt - you wear it well. And you’ve certainly earned it with your passion for Holdsworth. Loved the drumming too. Knew UK, Soft Machine, Tony Williams Lifetime (did I send that LP?), Gong and solo work … but I’ve definitely amped up my feelings for his work because of this channel. When you listen with a mega fan’s ears, you hear more beauty. Thanks 😊

Loved Allan since the early 80s. Amazing unique player and composer. But in all honesty there is no such thing as a best. There are hoards of incredible instrumentalists and composers.

Saw AH at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly in Summer of 1987 for Atavachron and Sand. Have you ever seen/heard AH play the SynthAxe? He was playing this for certain songs when I saw him for this show. Quite an interesting instrument.

Reminds me of Soft Machine style from the 70s. Jazz based rock;cool music to relax to. There you go, another band to check out, if not already heard them. Soft Machine Seven in my opion is a particularly good album.

Excellent work by Allan as usual. I don't understand why he seems to be so marginalized when compared to all the other common;y named great guitarists. Listening to this tells you how phenomenal and influenchal a player Allan was. Not many reactors are showcasing Allan Holdsworrh, so thank you both !

Question : What one thing did Edward Van Halen , Yngwie Malmsteen , Frank Zappa , Steve Vai , John Petrucci , Alex Lifeson , and Brian May , and John McGlaughlin had in common ? They all thought Alan Holdsworth was the greatest guitarist of all time .

Nick. At the risk of causing controversy and upset. If you have not all ready check out Frank Gambale some consider him the greatest jazz fusion guitarist.

I love Frank Gambale and listen to him very much. They actually recorded an album together called Truth in shredding. They have their solos back to back on that album. It's a masterpiece. I actually wrote Frank a year ago thanking him for taking down a strike that his record company put on the channel. Allan respected Frank and vice versa
