My gear has changed slightly from the video but the light pack reflects changes. I’ll do another post hike video to catch any last minute gear changes that I’ve made.

Did it twice.. If there’s no rain in the forecast I’d leave the tent and jacket behind , only take a poncho that can do double duty. I slept about five hours total. Food is most important.. there was plenty of water available.. Mental focus is by far the most important, once you lose that the game is over. Fitness and conditioning are important but will only get you so far. Last time I was 64. Best of luck to you!

I appreciate you taking the time to make this video, as well as your food bag video. From my own experiences, the ANF section of the NCT teaches you two major lessons: how to hike through suctioning mud and how to hike through hallucinations! 2023 is my second attempt at completing the full 100 miles, and I look forward to seeing your name in the trail book hours ahead of my own! Best of luck to you and be safe.

After you showed the tarp and sleeping pad, I was afraid you weren't taking a bag or quilt at all. I feel better now. 😅 Looks like a lot of thought went into this. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for putting socks first, for all us sock lovers.

Socks make the hiking world go round!! Lol. Thanks for you positive comments! Much appreciated! I’m only sleeping 3-4 hours twice during the 50 hours so I can make the miles… I hope!!!

Love this video, As a 52 y/o man contemplating fastpacking, this video makes me feel a little less crazy. I was looking at the UD 30 pack, but now I think the GG Kumho is the one I want. Keep up the great work!

I’ve got close to 300 miles with the pack now if I include training runs. About 150 miles with it on overnight ventures. I’m really liking it!

I’m not into trail running but I picked up a scrap of foam underlayment for engineered flooring to put under my pad. It’s almost 1/8” and it was free. Bright yellow-hard to overlook

It’s always good to take advantage of stuff that is already on hand. We don’t always have to spend money to get gear that works….. nice one!

I would add in a second BeFree water filter to your pack list. Unlike a Sawyer, which is serviceable in the field, the BeFree is really bad when it starts to clog and you can’t do much about it until you get home - that’s been my experience, at least. Not so much of an issue if you’re just filtering spring water but if you’re pulling from ponds, it’s something to consider.
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks Год назад
That’s a valid point. It will be all spring water so I should be fine. I’ve used my BeFree through hundreds of miles. I don’t think I’ll need another. You right about filtering water with more particulate in it… I have a QuickDraw that I uses for those situations because it can easily be back flushed in the field and it rarely clogs anyway.

Damnit....you're the guy who's sleeping on the plane before they taxi to the runway. I've never been so lucky. I'm looking into tarp camping. I'm wondering how you did with the tarp. Bugs are always an issue but my preference is higher altitude in the sierra. I'd love to try it out on the Sierra High Route were bugs should be manageable and weight is everything. We're of a similar age. Great videos you put out. Really solid kits. Thanks. (any interest in the high route?)

Thanks Tayson! There’s quite a few items in my kit from your company Outdoor Vitals! Love your developing clothing line man! It’s the best well though out clothing line in the backpacking space. I just ordered a second filter from OV to minimize stop times. After using my fastpack, i’m reallying into the small dual water bottles on the shoulder straps. I’m looking forward to your water bottle holders hitting the market now so I can use my 14 oz. Bottles up from on my pack straps.. .that fast pack has really changed the way I feel about pockets on my straps. .. if they make sense and I don’t have to carry a huge hard bottle in them

So how’d the gear do on the 100 mile hike? Im interested in that pack?
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks 8 месяцев назад
The pack was really impressive. When running it felt like a part of my body. It was highly functional and facilitated the hike rather than hindered it if that makes sense. I just finished filming a review that I’ll be posting in a few days.

You didn’t go into detail on the first aid kit. I’m hoping you have blister care, antibiotic ointment, Benadryl, ibuprofen, Imodium, maybe Allegra.
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks Год назад
Yep.. got all that except for some of the stuff I’m allergic to. My gear is fairly dialed in because I’ve done up to a month in the Sierra with only remote re-supplies or no resupply.

@@juanbackpacks I lead a trip in Michigan over Memorial Day weekend and one of the participants got stung two days in a row in the lip, which swelled up as a result, and he also was bit by something in his sleep - probably a spider - and his hand swelled up to where you couldn’t see his knuckles. I was happy to have Benadryl with me but sorry that I left the EpiPen at home, as if his luck continued he could have gone past the need for simple Benadryl.

I often wonder if I’d be just as warm down to 50 F sleeping in my hiking pants and having them tucked into my socks, and just wearing a down jacket for extra torso warmth. If my butt got cold, I could throw my rain jacket over my waist. That would save weight over a bag, and be more versatile than a quilt.
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks Год назад
Ha ha. Good point. The puffy idea is great but like you alluded to, the lower body might get cold. A compromise might be down puffy pants and down socks. Might be lighter than a bag and keep you warm in that scenario.

10k mah power bank seems like a lot for 48 hours but honestly this kit is dialed
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks Год назад
Thanks for the positive feedback. You are absolutely correct but the NB1000 is lighter than many other power banks of half that power storage. Also, I have a Garmin watch, InReach, iphone and two headlamps. I actually flopped down on the ground the first night at like 3:30 a.m. and was so tired that I forgot to shut down my InReach so I needed some extra juice for that. .. plus the two headlamps recharging from hours of night hiking. It’s a give take but my biggest fear was to run out of juice for my headlamps because you can’t complete the 100 miles without significant night hiking.

If the forecast is 0% rain, are you still planning on taking the rain jacket? Lows look like they’re around 50 so the Kuiu should be plenty.
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks Год назад
I agree but i always like taking rain gear. I believe I can get my base weight down to 5lbs and my food weight down to 5lbs or just under. I’m sifting through my great today and making final decisions. I’m fine in the 10-13 lbs range…. We will see though I’m going to do a full final load and see what the scale says today.

@nedanother9382 Год назад
I would recommend gossamer gear for packs 6 days a week and twice on sunday. I have the G-420 and the Mariposa for when I hike with my wife. Great packs at a great price. There are details on the shoulder straps that make a huge difference over many popular packs.
@andymytys
@andymytys Год назад
At 10k calories and 120 calories an oz, you’re over five pounds of food. Given your water bottles you’ve probably got another 2.5 pounds there, if not 3. I think your maximum weight will be closer to 13 pounds than 10.
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks Год назад
Those are solid estimates. I’m only carrying 18oz of water because of the speed I’ll be moving and the good supply of water. I’m prepared to carry more if I need. I made this video before I made my final food choices so that is off. I’ll likely be between 11-12 because I’m not going to carry 10k. 10k is reasonable for something like this but I just don’t see myself being able to consume 10k. I’ll do an after video to show what I actually ended up doing.
@andymytys
@andymytys Год назад
@@juanbackpacks the beta I’m hearing from locals is that water levels are way down and some sources are dry. I’m planning on keeping my dirty 1-liter bladder full and drinking out of my 16 oz bottle, but as soon as I break into my 1-liter that will be my signal to refill at the next available opportunity.
@juanbackpacks
@juanbackpacks Год назад
@@andymytys thanks for the heads up on water sources. That’s great intel for sure! I have the ability to carry extra water if need be. I keep my electrolyte intake separate from my water intake so that helps if I get little behind on my water. I’ve done big waterless long stretches in the Sierra in extremely dry conditions. I’m not too worried about it. I’ll adjust on the fly. I’ll be capable of carrying 24 oz of drinkable water plus a back up of 1 liter if needed.
