I'd love to be able to hike faster since time is limited out on trails. Most of us only get weekends or a few days at a time so covering more ground can lead to more adventures. At the same time, life isn't a rush, I thoroughly enjoy taking my turtle pace time and still covering the same trails! Like everything in life and outdoors - variety is the key.

I'm fortunate enough to have the fitness to run a trail like this in less than a day. I've even run through the night a few times to go like 130 or 150 km and 6-8km of elevation gain in one go, but that's most definitely sufferfest territory. I'm probably going to get into this style of multiday fasthiking / trail running eventually. I'll have to come back to these videos for inspiration on the sleeping and cooking systems.

Great upload! I got tired of those Pro Meal bars pretty fast. The base for all of them is brown rice sugar and oats so they all the flavors kind of start to blend together. You can also do better for calorie density. Pro bars are 4.3cal per gram which is a bit less than a Cliff Nut Butter bar. Not sure if they're making their way to Canada but I've recently got hooked on YES brand bars which are 5cal/g and the primary ingredients for each are whatever the flavor is as opposed to being primarily cheap syrup (sugar) and grain. Another good option are the single serving packs of nut butter and making your own cookie on a Honey Stinger waffle. This latter option is a much higher calorie density than a Pro bar and gives you a slightly more balanced source fat, carbs, and protein. For example 32g pack of chocolate sunflower butter has 18g of Fat, 8g of carbs, 6g of protein. Combined with a Honey Stinger you get a 360 calorie 62g snack (nearly 6cal/g) with 25g of fat, 27g of carbs, and 7g of protein. Tastes way better too.

My last section hike on the AT, I met a mother/daughter team doing a thru hike NOBO. Mother was fastpacking. She had a child's school backpack with a couple bottles of water and snacks while the daughter was in total thru hike mode. The mother was met at the end of the day at a planned road intersection by her husband who was in a class B Sprinter van. Daughter tented at a shelter every night.

Nice trip idea and video, but fabtastic scenery for doing this! That's a bunch of miles in two days. Thanks for showing this, outlining your gear, and narrating your progress. Let me know if you want to try the Timberline Trail here in Oregon. We've got a 41-mile loop around Mt Hood that has a high point of 7,300 feet, (2,000 feet / ~700 m?) lower than what you covered, and a low point of just 3,200 feet (~1,000 m?). It is really fun to do a two-day loop with 9 challenging water crossings, many smaller crossings, and a few snowfields to cross. A friend celebrated her 30th birthday with a 24-hour climb to the peak (11,245 feet/~3,500 m?) and then ran the trail. The most enjoyable part is beer at the lodge when you finish!

Great video. A few comments.. Looks like you live in Mission. I do as well on 22nd and 4th Street For the hike I just finished the Rockwall solo 2 weeks ago over three days and two nights. I also went north to south. First night at Helmet for day one, day two was Rockwall Pass, down to Tumbling campground , then down Tumbling pass. Spent the night at Numa campground and then final day grinded up Numa Pass, down to Floe and then exited. Honestly I would never recommend anyone do this trail south to north and am certain North to south is so much better. Mainly because of the nightmare that would be ascending Tumbling Pass. Going down it blew my mind. Like to grind the Floe Accent on the first day then grind Tumbling the next day is just a lot of suffering. Also I absolutely loved ascending Numa on the third day. It was 6km to the Numa Pass from the campground through that beautiful forest and I would hands down pick ascending Numa vs. Ascending Tumbling. North to south really is the only way to go. Looks like you had just as great of weather as I did. I felt really blessed to have had such perfect weather over my three days on this incredible trail. It really was a wonderful experience

I do the 72.4 (117 km) AT miles through the Smokies every couple of years in a single day. I've tried both ways with my best time being a bit over 18.5 hours and my worst a bit over 24 hours. Skipping the sleep and cook systems kept me under 10 lbs with almost 6 of it being fluids. Lots of electrolytes and a couple of fresh pairs of socks is key. That, and having a ride versus having to drive out. Food was just two 1 lb summer sausages and three large oranges.

I discovered an awesome energy gel with a lot more calories than most of them, because it includes nut butter and coconut oil. Spring Energy Speednut. 250 cals for a 52g gel. I love them for long endurance events like hiking and backcountry skiing. Plus an added bonus: they are runny enough to still squeeze out in the winter!

Check out Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim at the Grand Canyon, 46 mi, 12-13k ft of elevation gain. Do it when it is cooler but it is a very doable in a day. More of a mental and technical challenge (having fueling, hydration, pacing down) than a physical one if just trying to finish.

So, I'm very intrigued, sir. As a former New Yorker, I take long purposeful strides, quickly. I average 3.5 mph over the course of a usual 3 hrs. This is with 15 lbs of food water chair and tarp. I am in Sandy Eggo so I try and get my 10 miles in before midday. When I backpack, my total weight is around 20 lbs. I am able to keep the same pace but with big elevation gains, I struggle. I think because I'm not getting acclimated fast enough. I want to do more of what you did today but am fearful of not taking enough breaks/not eating enough.
