I'm a Premed student and can't understand genetics anywhere more than from your channel. You are amazing! I wish you make more videos on higher-level, enhanced and new genetic concepts for students of master of genetic counseling and geneticists.
The easiest way to understand is certain gene expresses eye color. Allele is the actual color like brown, black, or blue. I hope that helps to those who are confuse.
I don't see why you have so little views, you are an excellent teacher, and you teach in a way that is actually useful, rather then just popular science.
I think that those who are serious about learning the stuff that Khan Academy has to offer would make an account on the web site. The way it classifies the videos and tracks your progress is so great!
honnestly, this whole channel was sent from God, i swear. Thank you so much for all these priceless lectures. I just type anything i need to know more about and im preety sure Khan Academy has a video for it!
My ex-husband has a Ph.D (from Northwestern University) and did Genetic Research for P&G. He made medication for them. Now he works for Pfizer. He always thought it was hard to understand genetics & immunology, which made me feel better about not understanding anything. I have a 2-year paramedic level knowledge of Microbiology & immunology.
Its like we all have pizza But you might have cheese pizza ,I might have chicken pizza Pizza - gene ( same for all) Cheese pizza - allele ( particular type for that particular person) Chicken pizza - allele ( particular type for that particular person)
This actually is not confusing. It has been made confusing by giving different names for almost same things. This also applies for chromosome, chromatin and chromatid.
For the first time Khan Academy couldn't help me with a concept, Because the concept itself is very complex that's almost difficult to be understood. 😀😁😂😑
Could we also say that Alleles are like Homologous Pairs? We can have Homologous Pairs that code for the character say hair but have have different varying traits in them like hair colour?
This video should be compressed to be 2 minutes long. 75% of the content is him saying the same thing over and over again.. IN exactly the same way, which is to say, he's saying it in exactly the same way, the same way he says it before. Over and over, about what his image is referring to. the image he's pointing to, is the same way, as the other things. Over and over again. So what I'm trying to say, is that the video should be shortened because he's saying the same things too many times. Which is to say he needs to cut that out because it's too repetitive.
This speaker has made many videos, and knows what he's doing. He is very smart. Good teachers know that repetition helps learn, and that explaining the same thing 4 ways might help 4 students understand the subject each step of the way. Also, it might just be his manner of speaking. Also, his priority with this video is to help people understand what he's talking about. He is not concerned with the fact that many students will find this video "rudimentary" and a waste of their time - he is concerned that many students would not understand the video if he were to just say, "Gene = section. Allele = flavour of section". Also, most of his repetition occurs while he is drawing, and his drawing helps visual learners. Also, he talks about more than just the basics of genes and alleles. He talks about mRNA, tRNA, rRNA, transcription, translation, X and Y chromosome determining gender (which many forget nowadays), etc. Altogether, I understand your criticism and think it is somewhat valid, but it is a good idea to see things from the speaker's perspective, and from less-intelligent viewers' perspectives as they gain a lot out of this video
now you are saying things over and over again.. its way of talking, for god sake.. if u dont want repetions..u should be going thru textbooks not these kind of videos for heaven sake
I wanted to ask a question to clarify some simple concepts. We always hear that we have two copies of every gene (one from father and another from mother). When we say that, do we mean the 5-3 strand and 3-5 strand double stranded DNA? Or do we mean that there are actually two copies of the gene, each having its own 5-3 strand and 3-5 strand?
When polypeptides are being synthesized, is the template equally likely to be from the maternal or paternal chromosome or is there a difference in probability? Does it even matter? It should, in cases of heterozygotes with one abberant allele e.g. Tay Sachs disease, shouldn't it? How does one chromosome get chosen, from which a protein is to be made when there are always two options? Or is it that both maternal and paternal chromosomes contribute?
I have a doubt, when you say you have A on your gene and T on my gene (two alleles), the A it is not supossed to be together with another pair of base on my gene? How it is a allele? Because T and A are pair of bases. I don't know if you can understand my question.
dear sir wouldn't,t it be easier to say the gene we get for eye color from our parents one from mother and the other from father are alleles to each other . am i right ? plz correct me if i am wrong .
thank you. I thought I was the only one who thought this. I watched a couple other videos and understood the difference in 15 seconds compared to what this guy was trying to explain in ten minutes in a very complicated confusing way.

How is self replicating RNA may be the basis for all complex life on earth different from a tornado ripping through a junkyard and producing a 747 jetliner? Love the information but i think your premise is flawed. Our creator/designer gave us all the necessary tools to live forever in a vast uncharted Universe and some try and look the other way. Sad to see, but in the end. Your non belief has actually helped us understand our Universe in a more logical and productive way. So in the end it all works out how it was intended. If everyone thought the same and had the same beliefs we would never be able to debate and figure out the truth together. Everything is the way it is for a reason and i feel we will eventually figure out the answer or force an intervention.
Enlightened TruthSeeker101 Well it's more like a tornado ripping through a junk yard and forming a nonsensical structure that someone claims has meaning. Are you seriously expecting him to indoctrinate his viewers with your religious belief though?
You can't deny that everything in this Universe has a cause. Everything! Our creator is outside of this Universe which negates the need for anything prior. Everything looks ordered and yet came from disorder. The creator is inside of you as well. So stop looking out into the world and look inside of yourself.
Enlightened TruthSeeker101 Well there are uncaused events. The Big Bang is likely to be one of them if you study up on the hypothesis that it occurred from a zero energy state. Outside of the universe yet inside of me? That doesn't check out. Do you have proof that it was your god that created the universe and not some other god?
@@cryptkingdom4509 I hear what your saying and can't disagree. I simply think it's more probable than not. Atheist have done a lot for the human race so i have no problem with there view. We all need each other and need to set aside our beliefs for the future of humanity.
Kind of like gum right? If you take a classroom to go get some gum, everyone would have had gum. These are the genes. Inevitably kids would have chosen different flavors of gum so the different flavors are the Alleles. Makes sense.
