Tell the eBay seller USPS will give him free Priority mail boxes. He need not use old recycled Amazon boxes to ship shoes in. I ditto another comment to restore some shoes that have ok soles but look terrible. The pair you started with was already 95% ok. That's good enough for most folks. Let's see you bring a 40% shoe up to 99% like you did with these. For that I recommend JB Weld epoxy and Shoe Goo.

Question: is not Necessary use another Brush to polished the shoes? Did some wax residues will be on the Brush, and Mess up the Shoes? What trying to say is you use the same brush and different wax colors.

I buy nearly all of my shoes off of eBay and fix them up with Saphir products. I've purchased and restored probably 12 pairs and couldn't be happier with the savings and time I put into my shoes. Definitely something to be proud of and enjoy.

A lot of people have commented that "we should have picked a more difficult pair." I understand the idea, but in reality there are so many good pairs of AE's on eBay that you shouldn't have to settle for a pair that's in terrible condition. I just bought two more pairs of AE's for future $50 eBay Challenge videos, and it was actually more difficult to find pairs in bad condition than it was to find them in good condition!

The Hanger Project I've had great success rescuing tires (but not super damaged) Allen Edmonds, Johnston Murphy Aristocraft and Florsheim Imperial shoes that have found in thrift shopa for 2 to 5 dollars. Along with some basic creams polishes and waxes. Along w some edge dressing and some overdue time w quality cedar shoe trees, they came back quite nicely. Great video, enjoyed the content:-)

Thomaz Nadeau the approach can also yield great shoes with other serviceable makes such as Johnston Murphy Crown Aristocraft (then made in USA ones), florsheim imperial , Alden, and hs Trask for the other USA made options to consider :)

This was a thoroughly relaxing video, thanks! It is impossible to explain to someone else the therapeutic, meditative qualities of cleaning, maintaining, and polishing one's own shoes, especially if you are someone like me who has some vintage pairs of shoes from companies like the original Hartt Shoe and Boot Company from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. They were, at one point, owned by Church's, and the quality is pretty much the same. Working on them is an utter joy. Thanks for the ongoing videos. David

Best shoes I ever bought on Ebay were a pair of Very dark brown Florsheim Imperials which cost me $22 and are beautiful. Although the postal costs from the US seem to have shot up in the last few years they would still have been a bargain at double the price. I have invested in Saphir and can agree it is head and shoulders above the usual High Street polishes. I am currently renovating a pair of Jones Maginot Derby shoes which are shaping up nicely and cost me the princely sum of £4.20-about the price of a good cup of coffee. Ebay has it's detractors but there are still bargains to be had which, with the kind of knowhow you show here, can live again. Thank you.

You have inspired me sir. I've been watching your videos and I was at a local clothing exchange and saw these cheap Aldos that had real nice walnut color for eleven bucks, half off the normal price. I said what the hell, and bought them. The leather is stretched out on the upper so I tried a sneakerhead method to minimize the creases with a damp towel and clothes iron. Worked pretty good, looks a little worse than the ones you just finished in this vid. They were quite wrinkled and felt loose when I tried them on. Your videos had me salivating for some Allen Edmonds and I hopped on Ebay and saw what fifty bucks and some quality products can do. I'm already fighting a serious shoe addiction and I think I see a new habit forming. If I can make up my mind on what AE I want, I will be stopping by HP and probably start off with something like the fifty in products you mentioned in a response below. I was amazed at the results I got with cheap products. Sorry for the length, but your vids are the first that actually had me produce my first successful mirror shine. I've only been trying for the last 5 years. But, using cheap products takes a long time, (for me). I have to confess, as an experiment on the other shoe, I used about 4 separate layers of wax and a hair drier on the other shoe and would heat until first layer melted in, then using my drill with a very light buffing wheel and light touch, started buffing. Of course, mine is not nearly as meditative and relaxing. Thank you for all the tips. Subbed.

One thing about Renovateur. I believe in such cases, where colour rejuvenation is important it's best to use it after a coloured cream. Logic behind this is that a dry leather takes inside more and deeper. So coloured cream has better chances to penetrate deep and perform a better colouring. After cream did it's job to further nourish the leather Renovateur may be of help.

And don't forget to factor in your cost for the 5 Parisian products at almost $25 per jar and the $15.00? pair of shoe laces, and your cotton chamois and the genuine horsehair shoe brush!! Forget the labor charges, you would be doing all of this shoe "repair" during conference calls which are making you plenty of *AD's already! Thank you very much but I will stick with my not so shiny 27 year old Rockport Pro Walker shoes with a monthly "massage" treatment of Propert's Boot Cream and a regular passover of Fiebings Saddle Soap to "nourish" them and keep them "soft and supple". They have served me so well that I think I will give them a proper Viking funeral at the end of this summer when the soles finally give out. Now I must go and watch the "Gentleman's Gazette" video to ensure I am "Dressing Your Age" correctly. Down here in Florida, I have customarily dressed in T-shirts, shorts, and flip flops and do not even consider breaking out my "big boy pants" unless the temperatures drop below 50°. [Hmmm, I wonder if Mr. Hanger Project is dressing appropriately for his "Shoe Restoration during a Conference Call" project??] *AD= Almighty Dollar

Kirby, I can't tell you how much these videos have helped me improve my wardrobe. Just a question about Allen Edmonds lasts - in your opinion, which of their last number do you think will last the longest? I am looking between last # 65 and #42 and the way in which one typically walks. It seems as though last #65 may handle the usage better because of the way in which the show is created with the toe naturally pointed upward. Last #45, like so many other shoes, looks like it may have to bend more. Long question, so any reply is very appreciated.

I did exactly the same thing with some A. Edmonds wingtips from Ebay, much worse shape though. I used something called Garrison Gold Restoration Paste first, which really made it very supple. Made a mistake in going right to the shoe polish. So I stripped it, and used your Saphir Cream to match the tint, and re-waxed. You're right that is an important step to even out the color.

Thanks for another interesting video. Do you do anything to a used pair of shoes to sanitize them? Also, do you do anything to aid in the shoe forming to a new foot, like wetting the insole so that it forms to your instep, etc.? Please do a follow up video of how you treat the inside of the challenge shoes. I just bid on a couple of pairs on eBay.

Awesome! Thx so much for the great tutorial. I’ll check out to see if you have a video on repairing detached shoe tips from the soles in women’s high quality Italian leather shoes. But, if you don’t have one made, couple you please do one on it? Thx so much! Megan

Just got a pair of Allen Edmonds' Exchange Place shoes, that I'll have to do this full process on. Noticed a couple areas with scuffs that will need the renovating cream, but overall a good purchase. On the Allen Edmonds site they are going for $197, and I paid $79.50 including shipping.

Do you ever do anything to treat/condition the soles of the shoe and/or the insole? Also, in a similar vein, do you do anything to condition suede? I can brush and treat with waterproofing spray, but if regular leather eventually dries and cracks without conditioner, what's to stop suede from doing the same?

That is a crazy amount of effort and a CRAZY amount of product. I have 20+ year old AE walnut Strands that still look great. I have use AE walnut cream polish on them 3-4 times in 20 years. I wipe them down with a soft damp cloth and then dry them after every 2-3 times I wear them. I use edge dressing as needed. They looking amazing. I have no doubt Saphir products are good. I also have no doubt the are generally completely unnecessary.

Excellent video, Kirby. I have a question. I recently found a great pair of AE loafers on eBay. One fits perfectly while the other is slightly wider in the heel, obviously due to size abnormalities in the previous owner. Could you show a method to resize or shrink a portion of the leather surrounding the heel of a loafer if you know of any other than sending them in for the rebuilding process? Thank you for the videos. Am anxiously awaiting my HP order to restock my shoe shining gear. Thanks!

I did the same thing with my first pair of real dress shoes. I bought pair of AE Park Avenues on eBay and they turned out great after I restored them. But I do have a question. What are your thoughts on treating leather soles? I've been debating using beeswax to seal them. I have some that I use to seal my boots for fall/winter.
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
The AE Park Avenues is a great shoe. Saphir has a Sole Guard that is supposed to condition and waterproof the sole. Its nice to use. But I don't think it's something that has to be done that often.

Thank you Kirby for all your knowledge. I really want to purchase a pair of fine shoes like those Allen Edmonds for very little money, as I don’t have $450.00 for new ones. However I don’t want to get burned abs buy a cheap or Fake pair of shoes. Any tips ? Thank you

Hi Kirby, If you say that the wax polish will crack, then why would you still apply it in the whole shoe? It makes sense to apply it only in the front and back because it does not bend much. I think the white lines when the wax cracks is due to a neutral wax? Or is the the same white line for a brown wax as well?
@strongyang
@strongyang 6 лет назад
I have the neutral creme and wax color as I have brown and dark navy color shoes. Don't know will it enhance the pigment of the shoes or they are only to shine and nourish them

Nothing "nourishes" dead animal skin. I find this verbiage a little macabre. The leather is tanned, preserved and stabilized. I think it's beyond being nourished. I do love his eBay shoes. What I love about the video: Kirby is renovating something old, maximizing its usefulness. I just bought some Allen Edmond shoes at Goodwill for $12.95 in my size. I used Kiwi polish. Man, they're nice! Great video, Kirby!

Hi Kirby, thank you for this excellent tutorial! I have never bought shoes on eBay but I will use this instructional video to refurbish a pair of Allen Edmonds wingtips that I have been enjoying for over 30 years. I have a question for you regarding how to treat a pair of Boots of New York Italian leather wingtips boots that I have just purchased. I live in the Rocky Mountains of Idaho and I am particularly concerned about if I get caught out in a snow storm with them and want to make sure that they are waterproofed and protected so that they will look good and wear as well as my Allen Edmonds have. Thank you in advance for your thoughts! Ken
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
Hi Ken - Thank you for your question! I would recommend using the Saphir Super Invulner. It is a nice waterproofing spray, but does not contain any of the resins or silicones of cheaper varieties. It is safe to use on the best leathers. Just spray after you've finished polishing. Once water stops beading, just reapply.

Some comments about Kirby plugging his products, but heck he has to pay for his business, the videos are free but include a little bit of subtle non pushy product placement, but thats fine. I have max respect for what this guy has achieved. I like some smart shoes, but also leather trainers.Above all his videos are hypnotic and a perfect alternative to yoga. Rock on Kirby (I would be interested in a review of your stereo system, headphones, speakers etc -

Great value for $50 and you made them look amazing. I recently bought AE 5th Avenue in dark chili and the McAllister in walnut. Great sale, $245 for each. If you buy AE shoes pre-loved, the cork is molded to someone else’s feet. Will the cork reform to its new owner?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
HI Allen - this is a good question. I've never heard of anyone being bothered by this. But I suppose it could happen. I think the cork would remold, but never to the same degree if the shoes had been purchased new.

I wear a size 17 A Allen Edmonds. I found a pair of size black, 10.5 medium split toe, AE's that were STILL online at Nordstrom for 400. The leather soles looked as if they hadn't been worn once--spray the inside with alcohol to disinfect, and 385 dollars are saved.
