Hi Kirby. Really enjoy these videos and have been following The Hangar Project for a few months now. Having bought some cheaper shoes recently I have taken the plunge now and ordered a pair of Allen Edmonds. A pair of Carlyles in dark chilli are winging their way to Glasgow Scotland as we speak. I plan to use this method for their first shine. However, would you recommend a coat of dubbin prior to beginning this shine? Also what pigmented saphire creams would you recommend for polishing the dark chilli finish? many thanks, craig.

Kirby Allison I noticed that you are not applying the mirror wax/water carefully. Is it because you are concerned about time, or it is just you ? The unevenness is so noticeable on the left shoe, left side of the toe cap.

Just bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds. Great video by Kirby explaining the need to prep my new shoes prior to wearing them for the first time and the step-by-step instructions. I never knew that new shoes straight out of the box didn't have any polish on them. I will be buying some of the Saphir products Kirby recommends from the Hanger Project. From what I've read and researched Saphir products are the gold standard.

I couldn't agree more... most men are intimidated by dressing well because they think it is difficult. Other menswear channels geek out about this and that. But the reality is that if you invest in high-quality, classic clothing, there are few combinations you pick that wouldn't look great.

Absolutely a great idea if you are walking extensively in the rain. Even a half-rubber sole. You can still add this to a nice, fully-welted shoe. Some people actually have dress shoes and boots with dainite rubber soles specifically to wear in snow and rain.

Hello Kirby, I'm primarily concerned with protecting dress leather shoes (plain, full grain) from the elements, especially rain. I'm considering getting the Saphir wax for this reason, even though it's only minor protection. But many people/sources seem to discourage applying wax to the vamp at all. If this is the case, how would one fully protect the shoe? Wouldn't the vamp always be more susceptible to damage? Is there a better way/product to make the shoe much more strongly and comprehensively (including the vamp) water-resistant? Thanks.

Hi Kirby! Great video. As an owner of multiple AEs, how often do you recommend one conditions their AE shoes if they are stored for a while? I understand the basic principle of conditioning the shoe first before polishing, but I wear my AEs depending on the season. For example, I only wear my AE boots during the fall and winter but not summer. Is it reasonable to condition the shoes every couple of months without striping the waxes or polishing again if the shoes is shiny and not scuff? I only ask before my AE sales person said I should condition my AEs every month if I don't wear them often, and then I read a comment on another video that shoe trees dry out leather if you keep the shoe trees in them 24/7. I do apologize for the long post, but wanted to be thorough first time around. Thanks.

I'm gong to be giving this treatment to my new Allen Edmonds that will be delivered this week.. I Have a question: I've got the McCallister wingtips. Kirby, thanks for your videos! I really appreciate them. Hey, I just scored a new pair of calf skin McAllisters in 10D, which is my usual size in calf J&M's and shell Florsheims, and they are a little snug (maybe even more than just a little snug!). Will these loosen up? Aside from what I already know about lateral leather stretch, these seem more narrow than other new 10D shoes I have purchased in the past. What is your experience / advice on these? I don't want to put any wear on them if they are always going to be tight.

I appreciate the helpful videos. I have a question regarding shoe cleaning: I typically use Bick conditioner and Saphir cream polish on my AE oxfords (no wax). For subsequent cleans, is it okay to simply apply more conditioner and cream polish, or should I strip off the old polish with renomat before conditioning and polishing to keep the leather conditioned? If polish should be stripped, what time interval do you suggest (assuming i wear the shoes 5x per week and polish monthly)? Again, I appreciate your videos and time responding to my question. -Mike

Hi Kirby, I recently started following you and your content is super awesome! I bought the Saphir products you use but had a question: How do you handle the seams of the shoe when applying cream polish? Do you just ignore and give those seams a coat as well? I’m asking it because I believe my seams (the treads) go from black to brownish when I apply brown cream polish and I’m unsure if it is supposed to be done like that? And if so, how do you handle excess cream polish going in those seams? Do you just buff it out?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
Really hard to worry about the seams. Just too difficult to do anything. You should be able to buff off any extra polish with the brush.
@ianmedium
@ianmedium 6 лет назад
Amazing, it’s like you added $400 worth of extra quality to the leather, they look more like bespoke leather now! Kirby, do you ever treat the arch section of the leather sole and also where the heal side on that part. I always do once a month as I find it helps with any potential cracking that can occur if one is caught out in a rain show and then the leather dries.
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
Thanks, ianmedium! Even I'm impressed at how much of a difference a good polish makes! And, yes, the waxes help protect the leather from the elements.

Hi Kirby! Thank you for the tutorial! Iam very new to shoe polishing, and i was wondering if i can use the Saphir Pate De Lux combined with alittle water in order to make the cap of my oxfords to shine just alittle bit more? Or do i strictly need the mirror gloss? Iam not looking for the same result, but just alittle bit more gloss than ‘normal shoes’ Cheers from Sweden!

You don’t need the mirror gloss. Look up the Elegant Oxford and he does it without the mirror gloss. It’s more of a cheat that will cut your time but not needed. However if you can spend the extra $25. Why not?

This seems like a great thing to do. And the results are amazing. The question I have is, how long does a shine like this last? If you're wearing the shoes a few times a week and buffing in between wears.

Great informative video, would you recommend the same for a pair of Church's shoes?

Hi Kirby, which cream polish colour have you used for those AE dark brown shoes? In your dedicated video you suggest two different colour options. Thanks

In the navy, shining my shoes were therapy. I wish I had some wax you are using.

I use a slightly different polishing method, but I love your videos on the subject. Polishing one's shoes is undeniably a meditative, enjoyable activity. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but the results speak for themselves. On an unrelated note: Consider shirt collars with a less extreme spread when you wear jackets like that. It's a detail most will miss, but I think it looks better when the angle of the collar runs parallel to the angle of the seam of the lapel.

Thanks! I about to start experimenting with some different spreads. I have a close friend that is really pushing me for a more narrow collar.

The Hanger Project Your friend is a wise man. It always looks more harmonious and elegant when the collar spread aligns with the angle of the lapel notch.

Great video as always. I’m just curious but do you know if the independence collection have better laces than the standard models? The laces on my Jefferson’s and Bartlett’s seem significantly nicer than my Park Avenues. Silly question but just curious.

I've actually never seen one of their shoes from the Independence Collection, but I would hope the laces are nicer! I need to check them out.

Hi Kirby....great video. Can I use the Renovateur even after a coat (or two) of the Pommadier cream polish has already been applied?

Absolutely. Sometimes I'll use the Saphir Renovateur for a quick condition and shine. It's such a versatile produce!

Kirby, what do you recommend for intermittent care? A saddle soap to remove the waxes and starting from scratch, or will the Saphir Renovateur, cream polish, and Pate de Luxe be ok on previous layers if done in moderation?

Do you recommend coordinating your suit color with the shade of the shoes being polished?

After buffing I always use a microfiber cloth for the last pass - it really takes the shine to an extra level. But somehow I never see that in videos about shoe polishing. I can't imagine I'm the only one doing this?

I agree, masterclass thanks! Nice music and level, even tough I could probably be without it. Will a toecap model hold the mirrorshine better than a wholecut model? I like the shoelaces thet actually stands up but even not my master cobler have them in one colour.
