www.uniquecoloring.com/ - In this episode of Unique Coloring, Daniel J. Middleton draws and discusses the life of Colonel Allen Allensworth, an escaped slave who fought in the Civil War and retired as an officer and chaplain prior to founding the first and only historic black town in California that was fully financed, governed, and populated by black people.
This Allensworth biography features me drawing another grayscale coloring page for my black history adult coloring book.

Extremely Informative Episode! I thought US Army Col.Charles Young was the 1st African American to obtain the rank of Colonel in the US Army. Col Young was posthumously appointed to Brigadier General by Pres Biden. Sadly not surprised the Town ULTIMATELY FAILED! Too many forces arrayed against it!🤔😡🇺🇸
@UniqueColoring
@UniqueColoring Год назад
Charles Young was promoted to that rank in 1916, see this link: www.nps.gov/chyo/learn/historyculture/charles-young.htm. Allensworth retired as a Lt. Col. in 1906! Simple math on this one. The media has that fact wrong.

Im a direct descendant of the allensworth community my great grandfather owned the only store in allensworth!! My grandmother had her 1st child there my aunt, I found out about the water poisoning from BGS ibmor and asked my grandmother about it the look on her face was priceless and sad! You should definitely interview her! Her history is worth remembering and honoring. I regret not talking to certain family members about their experiences when I had the chance. I visited Allensworth about 30 years ago and stayed friends with the park director for many years before he took a post at San Luis Obispo. A stunning testament to what Black people can do - and, to all the forces that convene to oppose us. Deuteronomy 28:15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: 28:16 Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. 28:19 Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. 28:20 The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me. 28:29 And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee. 28:34 So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 28:43 The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low. 28:44 He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. 28:47 Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; 28:48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee. 28:49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; 28:50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young: 28:64 And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. 28:65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: 28:66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:

I think you did an amazing job with this! Some of the timeline could use refining. Like the new train stop in Alpaugh in 1914 and the details of that. The start of the water issues in 1912-1914. The fact that the Pacific Farming Company did initially put sufficient wells in and then 17 years later demanding more due to growth might have been unreasonable, depending on the contract. The details of Allensworth and the town taking ownership of the water company subsidiary, yet still struggling to find or fund the solution. Context regarding the arsenic problem in the central valley from pumping too much water too fast from the aquifer. Your video was too beautiful to add in the context of the true hardship of Jim Crow and the conditions of Allensworth after the water problems went unaddressed. Residents would take turns using their water rights for farming and on many several occasions the residents attacked each other due to the desperation of trying to make a living their just off farming, which essentially no one could. They survived, they existed but sadly it was not a self sustaining place or community. Rugged area in a rugged time. When the state declared it a historic park, the state paid market value for the property which was low but legally that was what was allowed sp they also offered to help with assistance to relocate those that needed to leave. Extremely strong, amazing people.

Used to go here to celebrate every Juneteenth growing up as a kid. It’s crazy that most people in California don’t even know about this place.

I was born in Los Angeles, CA. My wife, children and I visited this site. We were filled with so much pride and hope for the future. Our history is so hidden from the mainstream America. All they want to show is the negative actions of Black People. What about our rich American History?

What a great video! I had no idea about Allensworth, CA. I’m grateful to have learned about those courageous and industrious African Americans who didn’t wait around on our nation to “give” them anything. They built their own!!! Thank you for posting this labor of love. I can’t wait to share this insight with others. 🙌🏾💪🏾😊

I had no idea and thanks to the current political climate that began under tRump, our children won’t learn this in public schools. It’s critical that Black families continue passing down their histories to their children. Thank you for sharing. 👏🏽👏🏽

Thank you for the history. There is a lot of stories out there that no one really talked about....Rosewood, Black Wallstreet for example. At first i thought the picture was of Denzel Washington playing Sergeant William Harvey Carney of the 54th Massachusetts Colored Infantry who carried the flag in the assault on Fort Wagner, on July 18, 1863. After severely being wounded twice, he was awarded the Medal of Honor 37 years later for his valor in this battle. Again great story.

This is the kind of history that should be taught in school s predominantly black. Black children dont know their history and has been to made think they dont have any. It should be made known to these children that their people has had a huge showing in shaping these united states of America in which they live. Thanku for bringing more black history front and center this important imfo can impact young lives.

Can the water officials back then be sued by the generation of those that fled Allentown for violating their Constitutional Rights of Life and Happiness? The water was their way of Living and Their Contentment was staying in a town without racial prejudice While they at it, sue the railroad company.

I thought it was pretty cool myself. When I looked it up on the map before watching the video. I was wondering where the water was going to come from seeing as how it wasn’t near a source. I wish they would have chose a better spot or wish one was available. Maybe it would not have to be...just history. Not so long ago either. 👍🏾 good job!

This was so informative, glad I came across your channel and this episode. I’ve lived in CA for many decades and don’t recall hearing of this, I am glad the town was made into a national park. I’d love to visit. I hope it is in good shape and continues to offer visitors history and context of the time. Thank you. (I agree with other commenter/s this could be a great film but I think including Allensworth’s earlier life as well. Amazing story)
