Those black and white D-Day bands were not painted on aircraft until the early morning hours of D-Day. D-Day was well underway when the Germans first saw those bands! they were painted with water based paint and it was expected they would be washed off afterwards. But they proved such good identification they remained on aircraft till VE Day.
