Even the best of friends have arguments and nothing was truer of the United States and Britain during their joint effort to defeat the Axis powers during World War II. Though the countries maintained a united front, both diplomatically and militarily, the relationship between Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt was not always as congenial as it appeared. Dr. Mark Stoler examines the diplomatic and military history of these two countries during the second great World War.

I like that Dr. Stoler started his lecture, stating that he was wrong about his initial assumptions regarding the complexity of the project.

Thank God Alan Brooke was the pre-eminent general in 1942 and 1943 preventing a massacre of Allied troops

I like how the lecture starts by saying Britain and the us became allies for the same reason as any other countries then at about 24 minutes admits the 2 main us interests in the west we're identical to our (UK) interests, ie control of the Atlantic by GB or the USA and a Europe which is not controlled by 1 power

This is also the exact same reason britain will most likely get folded into the united states trade network. Because our interests are so similar, and because of our commonality, it makes little economic sense for us to not economically colonize our former overlord.

Yeah and just as he says Churchill has a bias to believe in the “commonality and bond of the English speaking peoples” there are people who have an ideological bias of their not being that special bond of history, culture, and blood. Maybe Roosevelt being of ancient New York Dutch stock, ideologically republican (small r) and progressive, cozy with communists, maybe he didn’t feel an affinity of blood to the Brits but there are millions of Americans and some even in positions of power who would have agreed with Churchill and promoted the “Common bond of English people’s” and this goes back to the very founding of America when there was a pro-French/republican and pro-British/blood faction around the time of the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars.

Shame the Soviets, and now the Russians belittle the effect of Lend Lease. I am a Brit (Cymry am bwth), and while we may have had, and indeed still do have... discussions... between the US and the UK... it was, and still is a special relationship. Nos da and sweet dreams....

Whats that saying? Two peoples separated by a common language. Truth is we’re pretty much stuck with each other for better or worse
