Oh Linda, you are right. I watched a video and they said it took them fifteen minutes to do. I am a slow sewer, and it took me about an hour for the first one and a little less than an hour for the second one, but you have to count all the cutting, the sewing, the trimming.😅😅😅 Nice to meet you.

Such helpful information! I was having trouble with my batting making my bowl tops almost too thick to top stich through and my corners were impossible to get pointed. Cutting that batting just a bit smaller works great. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for this tutorial! I learned so much. I am 70 years old and am teaching myself how to sew. I believe I came across one of your teaching sessions to your students-making an apron. That was my first successful project. And now the cozy. I absolutely love learning with you. Thank you for all your time teaching younger students and now us older students. Stay well🧵🪡📍

Allison, thank you for your sharing on how to sew a bowl cozy... I am 70 yrs young and took Home Ec all thru high school and loved learning to sew, Mrs.Eubanks in Alexandria VA was my teacher for 3 yrs... I have respect/admiration for your skills to share and teach,, I chose to be a nurse as I knew I did not have those skills. Sewing is a wonderful skill, and I want to thank you for reinforcing the need to use 100% cotton in this project.. I made one that was that but I turned on a 10min microwave instead of the timer and had smoke and ruined my microwave, fire is a hazard. Pay attention !!! Now I am going to make another with all cotton and love your tutorial.. thanks.

I have watched so many cozy tutorials and you are correct to use a batting a smidge smaller than the fabric. Thank you for your common sense well detailed directions. I have made 9 bowl cozies and 5 plate cozies the same way. I did one using equal sizes and found the edge so bulky. I also use both the diagonal stitching and the horizontal and vertical stitching which I prefer even though you may find it too much stitching. Thank you for your great tutorial.

Since I am a newbie, My biggest issue is sewing straight, I always feel I should be able to sew fast. Watching you made me want to slow it down to get more precise! I struggle cutting my fabric straight as well and often look for discounted layer cakes! Your fabric is already coordinated and you can make 24 cozies by just cutting batting. I have a question for you (and others who may be able to answer). I love the idea of using this in the microwave as so many times, I use a pot holder to remove bowls from it. How practical is that, though? It has to get dirty from splatters. I heard you say you didn't use them this way. Thank you!

Great video, thank you! 😊 Thanks for the Tip about the batting! I've never heard that mentioned before. 😊 I also liked the Tip to check the inside of the fabric before sewing the dart! 😊 I also like that you cut the batting a tad smaller than the outer fabric! I've often seen videos when people haven't cut it smaller and then have to go around trimming off the edges. 😊 A chopstick is a brilliant tool for your sewing room! If it's wooden, you can mark it with 1/4", 1/2", 5/8" & 1" along and it also makes a very quick & handy measuring tool because it's always at hand in the jar with your pens, etc. I also use a small hair flat iron for small ironing tasks. I bought mine as a special extra when I bought something else & it's been the best Aussie $5 I've ever spent! (USD $3) 😊 It's quick to heat up and ironing ribbons, bias tape, facings & hems, etc are so much quicker to press because it heats ip fast & I don't need an ironing mat or board. It also doesn't have the steam that can some distort your fabric just a tad. 😊 To make templates for specific bowls & plates, I'm going to try just making paper templates the same as I do for baking tins, but I'll leave enough extra for seam allowances & 'slip' so that they aren't too tigh fitting in your bowls or plates and you haveenough extra to hold ontowhen carrying or taking out of the microwave. I wonder if small fabric handles might also come in handy for lifting and carrying them in & out of the microwave and onto the table? I wish I'd had you for my sewing at school ... maybe I'd have learned to enjoy sewing sooner than aged 60! 😊 Cosies for mugs of soup would also be great as gifts for winter .... as soup mugs are usually bigger than coffee mugs, but they would need a flat base. How many do you make for a set, what sizes please? I'd like to make some as gifts for Christmas and I wouldn't want to appear stingy.
@dcwatashi
@dcwatashi 10 месяцев назад
If you have some thing like a dollar store where you live, sometimes you can find the clear cutting mats and they make excellent templates much better than paper Also, just on a sidenote, when you have a lot of information to share, it makes it easier for us to read it if you put in paragraph breaks just like I did here in my comment section

Thank you! This tutorial is so helpful … I especially appreciate the tip about cutting the batting a bit smaller and than the fabric. It will make turning so much easier and the corners will look sharper. I like the tip about using less expensive fabric … these bowls will be used again and again and washed again and again. There’s no need to buy expensive fabric for this project! Question … is there any reason for not cutting multiple stacks of 10” squares? And, how do you feel about spray basting? Thanks again!
@amweg21
@amweg21 Год назад
You can cut more than one 10" square at a time if you are comfortable with doing that--for a tutorial I wanted to just show doing one at a time--myself I cut 10" strips and then cut again--usually just the 2 because I don't want the fabric to shift Spray basting: I use it for quilts but think it might be too messy for such small pieces Thanks for watching!

This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen of making bowl cozies. You are a wealth of knowledge! What size sewing needle do you recommend? I made a large makeup bag with fusible fleece using a size 14 needle and there were many skipped stitches.

@@louisevannorden2001 I had seen the video before. I end up using size 100/16 for bags because size 14 denim needle causes skipped stitches.

The package of the batting reads that it shrinks, and you should put it in hot water for 20 minutes and dry prior to using. I did this and the batting bunched up in places. Do you have issues with shrinkage after washing?
@annlikins3340
@annlikins3340 2 года назад
I soak my batting in the tub with pure hot water for 20 minutes. I don't wring it out. Instead I take the top end of batting squeezing the water out as I go down toward the end. I wear rubber cleaning gloves while squeezing. Water will still be hot. Grab a pan, bowl or whatever and put the batting in to get it to the dryer. I dry on low until dry. I can't see using the batting straight from the package knowing all cotton will shrink some. I also prewash my material before sewing.
@amweg21
@amweg21 2 года назад
I don't prewash...when you wash the bowl...just stretch it out a bit and air dry...the fabric will shrink some along with the batting...
@suefliss7210
@suefliss7210 Год назад
@@amweg21 Agree. I don't wash anything before hand. If there is any shrinkage the batting and fabric kind of shrink the same. I put mine in the dryer and when I take them out of the dryer I stretch and smooth and shape and they look just fine.

I have made many bowl cozies and watched many tutorials and this one is great! I have one question. When I match up the dart seams to sew the pieces together I have always tried to make sure the top and bottom seam allowances were laying in opposite directions in order to reduce the bulk. As I watched you pin them together it did not look as if you bothered with that. Do you worry about that or just pin and stitch?
@amweg21
@amweg21 Год назад
I don't really bother with it--if they lay in different directions I go with it--mostly just pin it and stitch--it seems to even out and not be too bulky--good luck!
@carolp1581

Press the dart seams open and match them that way. Works great! Also, you can curve the corners. And you can add another couple rows of quilting across the centers of the square.

Actually they catch on fire in a microwave because of food being on them. Polyester has a higher melt rate than cotton. Cotton will burn quicker in the microwave. Alot of the coats and Clark thread are a polyester core wrapped in cotton.

@@Pip7-px3wq No I am not. I use one all the time made with polyester thread. If you watch Clare Rowley’s video on making these. She experimented with different threads and fabrics. Polyester with not catch on fire in the microwave. Everyone tells you that it will but it is a myth. Try it yourself. It will only burn if something is spilled on it.
