Not Australian, and yet this song speaks to me so strongly of leaving home and the heart string struggles of living away from the place where all your memories were born.
what an amazing track track, and here I am, some 7 years later and it all still resonates. I wish I'd never heard the last 3rd though, not cause I don't like it but just cause it's crushing!
On a drive from St Lucia to Surfers' In my old university car We had the windwos down for our aircon The door was so hot that you burned your arm It was the tail-end of a summer And the heat washed in with the breeze And you were searching for something to sing to As the radio played another terrible song But lucky for me, you found a tape with Tallulah on And it's been a long time Since I've seen all my old friends But I really love my new friends I feel I've known them a long while Then last summer you wrote me a letter On the back of a surf magazine You said you didn't have any paper And maybe you wondered what could have been So I sent you a postcard from Berlin of a fatman eating a sausage And hid the fact I was hiding As the DJ played another terrible song But lucky for us, we found a bar with the Matels on And it's been a long time Since I've seen all my old friends But I really love my new friends I feel I've known them a long while I'm wondering if I've already heard all the songs that'll mean something And I'm wondering if I've already met all the people that'll mean something But I find myself daydreaming of the places where we used to stay I used to brush them away St Kilda, Coolangatta, Bondi Beach and Coogee Bay I like the sound of their names And I wonder if you would wanna go there with me When I'm finished over here If you're not finished with me
On a drive from solution to surface In my old university car We had the windwos down for our recon Though it was so hot that you burned your arm It was the tail and over summer And the heat washed in with the breeze And you were searching something to sing to As the radio played another terrible song But lucky for me, you found the tape with Tallulah on And it's been a long time Since I've seen all my old friends But I really love my new friends I feel I've known them a long while Then last summer you wrote me a letter On the back of a surf magazine You said you didn't have any paper And maybe you wondered what could have been So I sent you a postcard from Berlin of a fatman eating a sausage And hear the fact that I was hiding As the DJ played another terrible song But lucky for us, we found a bar with the matels on And it's been a long time Since I've seen all my old friends But I really love my new friends I feel I've known them a long while I'm wondering if I've already heard all the songs that'll mean something And I'm wondering if I've already met all the people that'll mean something But I find myself daydreaming of the places where we used to stay Used to brush them away Sinkilada, Cool and Gata on the beach and ? Like the sound of their names And I wonder if you would wanna go there with me When I'm finished over here If you're not finished with me
+gnomad57 I generally cringe when ppl miswrite lyrics but he can't really be blamed for not knowing the Aussie geography. I always think of Cabramatta when I hear her sing Coolangatta (my friend Matt was hooked on heroin when we visited Aus together and the bag of dope he'd brought on the plane had dissolved in his anus during the flight, so first thing after touching down we did was plan a trip to Cabramatta to meet a contact of his to get him some dope before he started getting sick. Logistics, baby! LOL). E. Morris is so wholesomely beautiful. I want to rest my weary head in her ample creamy bosoms and cry about the world's injustices.
Uh, that sounds like quite the trip. I'll only add one more lyrics correction - "air-con" is short for Air Conditioning in the first verse. "We had the windows down for our air-con, the door was so hot you burned your arm." I think we all get that visual - summer's over, one llast drive to get home or to school or to someplace new. Great song. And although I may have already met all the people who will mean something, I definitely have not heard all the songs that will mean something.
Besides I don't think Harold Pinter is particularly right about Genocide and I think Harold Pinter should be sent down for his remark, about The U.S.A. and that Harold Pinter should not be using "The Nobel Prize" as a vehicle for his own misuse after all 1812. As well as this Tchiakovsky is a friend of mine and he's not Russian and is that 1812 Mr. Pinter you ignoramus Mr. Pinter ...
