I use weed membrane, but once you put wood chips on top, within a year or two you'll have weeds growing in the woodchips. I speak from experience.

Dam! I thought I’d come up with a master stroke 😊 3 to 4 years I’d be alright with, but 1 or 2 sounds rather disheartening

As others said the weeds will grow on it unless you sweep it clean frequently. If you don't it's a mess by the second year and hard to get back up.

You are really lucky I went to the allotment today just to check if it was water logged at it was what you say about rise beds is not right my poly tulle has rise beds and all this rain even the beds are flooded were we are the council has diverted the beck and now we get all the water I put chippings down on my plots and they are even floating in all the water it's going to take weeks before the water goes down and then I will see what I can do with it

I wouldn't go near weed membrane. If you are covering with wood chips and beds you will initially suppress the weeds anyway. Then the paths just need topping off to continue to suppress. Weeds will find their way into the wood chips so you will get weeds regardless. Weed membrane will break up or snag over time and will find it's way into the top layer as I had and you will continue to pull strands of membrane for years to come. Loving the garden content by the way.

Weed membrane is anything but weed free .Just whack a thick layer of heavy duty plastic and cut holes to plant or just use woodchip .Its far easier to just hoe woodchip and top up as needed .

Thanks for this, Is weed membrane pretty useless then? A couple of people have said this… I think it’s either black plastic or just a tonne of Woodchip..

@@graemeslosttheplot The weeds grow in to the membrane very quickly Graeme and then it's hell to remove.Ive just spent days ripping it up after one year ! Just as effective to put a thick layer of woodchip down .Ive used heavy duty plastic on some beds and that's lasted . For fruit or squash I wouldn't worry about raised beds ,
