Graeme , if I have too many beans I pod them and just keep the actual beans freeze them and then add them to stews pies and one pot meals, the same can be done with your borlotti beans and also your Greek Gigantes. Also you can dry them out and put them in jars On the shelf, which look beautiful or put them in bags and put them in the freezer, that’s what I’m doing this afternoon. Cos some kind soul had left some runner beans in a carrier bag by the gate “Free to a good home” . My runner beans have been awful this year cause I’ve been in for two operations etc so not been around so much. So I’m just podding the tough beans which most of them are to be honest and composting all the greenery. Hope that helps a bit.. PS, you’ve done amazingly with your beans this year and yes I think you have grown a lot. I would just stick to a couple of varieties but it’s your allotment. Whatever floats your boat mate.. all the best x
The back of your jumper with all the foliage stuck to you. 😂. I come back with mud and straw all over me. I won't tell you where I sometimes find straw when I come home to get changed. 😄
No need to blanche beans at all .Ive been freezing direct for years and they still taste as good a year later 🙂I only grow Cobra and Cosse Violetta as we love them .Borletti you dry the beans preferably on the plant but just dry them in a warm place .Add to soups and stews like Greek Gigantes .Chard cop the stalks and then chop the leaves .Fry the stalks ,then add the leaves and then add eggs beaten .Lovely tasty omelette .I add cheese 😋
Hello, Graeme! Don't throw your dried peppers away. Take them off the plants and continue to let them dry all the way, Remove the stems and some of the seeds if you think they'll make them too hot. Grind the dried peppers for seasonings. If you really enjoy the flavors, use the dried seeds to grow more next year.
Which they would devise a way to channel rain of a poly tunnel. Seems such a waste for the water not to be collected into a water butt when there is so much surface area to harvest…. Gonna put my thinking cap on🤩
Yes, I agree with all the lovely comments below. And very happy with your clever use of music. Not too much and you don’t have in the background while you are talking which I find annoying with other RU-vidrs. But your use is well balanced and jolly happy music ❤
I pod the gigantes and put them straight into freezer bags. The beans must be fully fresh to do that. If they are starting to dry, they must be left to fully dry. Great harvest. Lovely update. We dig a trench and throw in the bean vines to die down then cover it ready for growing next years crop. I dont know how to preserve the borlotti.
Forget to mention. With the wilted pepper plants, you might be able to salvage them by watering heavy and see if they perk up so you can get the rest of pepper harvest. I've had mine wilted down like that and sometimes the watering works to bring them back fairly quickly. I know what it's like to have too many things going on to keep up with everything.
Don’t dump the carrot tops they are edible. I dry mine in an air drier 80degrees until they crumble in your hands into powder. Pop them in a herb bottle and use in stews etc during winter
Your beloved beans need to harden up and go crisp, same as Greek gigantis, don't burn bean foliage, chop n drop in your beds as they are full of nitron
Great haul there Graeme. Lots of lovely Sunday dinners. I grow Greek Gigantes and usually leave them on the plants to dry before picking but if the weather is against that I pick them off once the lovely big beans have formed and lay them out in the potting shed to dry off. Once that's done, I pod them and leave the beans to dry out completely before storing in jars. As for cooking I soak a handful or so overnight, drain, add fresh water (no salt - you can season once cooked) and boil them up until tender. Throw them in some soup or make a tasty sauce to go with them. Yum, a lovely creamy bean. We remove the plants at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil to regrow the following year, mow the stems and leaves and put in the compost bin.
Think leaving beans on to dry is a popular option. U can make huge pot stew with all vegetable and don't have to cook for days or keep feeding the pot.
Chop the beans at ground level, then add the rest to your compost heap. The roots will add nitrogen to the soil and improve it for next year. Keep making these videos as they are a joy to watch.
I wouldn't go near weed membrane. If you are covering with wood chips and beds you will initially suppress the weeds anyway. Then the paths just need topping off to continue to suppress. Weeds will find their way into the wood chips so you will get weeds regardless. Weed membrane will break up or snag over time and will find it's way into the top layer as I had and you will continue to pull strands of membrane for years to come. Loving the garden content by the way.
Weed membrane is anything but weed free .Just whack a thick layer of heavy duty plastic and cut holes to plant or just use woodchip .Its far easier to just hoe woodchip and top up as needed .
Thanks for this, Is weed membrane pretty useless then? A couple of people have said this… I think it’s either black plastic or just a tonne of Woodchip..
@@graemeslosttheplot The weeds grow in to the membrane very quickly Graeme and then it's hell to remove.Ive just spent days ripping it up after one year ! Just as effective to put a thick layer of woodchip down .Ive used heavy duty plastic on some beds and that's lasted . For fruit or squash I wouldn't worry about raised beds ,
Weed membrane breaks plastic pieces if your going down that root black plastic is better look at Temu ive had good stuff from there my latest purchase was a brush cutter as always happy gardening Richardx

Graeme I bought a sheet of super therm poly tunnel plastic from first Tunnels. Tbh it cost me as much a whole tunnel like the cheap one you are referring to. There is an online tool on their website that helps you to measure how much you need. Also remember that you will need the UV tape to go over the bars on the top of the tunnel to protect it from the Sun. My frame like yours is still a strong as before and I have had it seven years, I have bought two separate covers for it each costing about £60. This time I am using the proper stuff and although it may cost a bit as so far stood up to all the storms and all the bad weather. We’ve had all the last two seasons with no issues.. I would recommend this.
Oh that’s great! Thanks for the tip I’ll check them out! It’s super annoying but I guess it’s why you pay big money as the expensive ones last for years, some people on the plot invested heavily but their tunnels are going strong even after 10 years or so!!
Hey thanks, glad you enjoy them! It’s been a while since I’ve gone back to my roots and done an allotment video (if you pardon the pun), I really enjoyed making this one, I’ve found a nice balance with work and getting down the plot now so I’m going to do one a week every week.
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s been a while since I’ve done an allotment video, forgot how much I enjoy doing them! I’m aiming for one a week so lots more to come over autumn and winter! The glasses were a complete impulse purchase but I love them 😂
