Summary of allowable defects 25:00
Remember: A CGC 9.8 is a "nearly perfect collectible with negligible signs of manufacturing or handling defects."
This video is all about what defects CGC will allow and still award the grade of 9.8. It’s important to note that CGC has not published it’s grading criteria anywhere. Any information about this out there is strictly anecdotal from collectors that have hand on experience through often many PAINFUL submissions. So the information in this video is from my personal experience, because as you can see, I have A LOT of CGC 9.8 slabs, I’ve done A LOT of CGC submissions myself and I’ve bought a lot of 9.8’s over the years so I have a really good idea of what CGC will consistently allow in a 9.8. So the books that we’re going to look at are books that I’ve submitted with a prescreen, books I’ve submitted without a prescreen, books I’ve bought from other people, books from across many different submissions, books that were submitted a few months ago, and books that were submitted years ago. The reason I mention this, and the reason it’s important is that these aren’t just defects that passed in a single submission where CGC was having an off day. That still wouldn’t really make sense because 3 people evaluate the book before it gets its final grade. But nonetheless, these are from submissions over a span of years so that we know it is consistent, reliable data. In order for a defect to make it onto my list of an “allowable defect in a 9.8” I’m going to need to see at least 5 examples from books in at least 2 different submissions.
I can offer at least 10% off (sometimes quite a bit more) any books listed on my eBay store! Just send me a DM on Instagram or email me @ comicallycorrectcomics@gmail.com

I still feel there’s some inconsistency with the grading. I’ve sent in books that get 9.2, 9.4 and 9.6 with what you’ve shown as 9.8s. Looking at the graders notes, there was hardly anything letting me know why this received the grades they got. So it’s really hard to understand what’s correct and what’s not.

This was excellent. I learned so much about grading in this 1 recording than in the last 10 years. I didn't completely understand how cgc determined a book is a 9.8 'til now. Thanks for putting this one out.

Great rundown video. The subjective nature of grading is tough but you definitely help make it a little more scientific. Like many, I've had 9.8s that look like 10.0s in every way. Maybe someday I'll get a 9.9 or 10.

You took good time and care on the details, which is commendable. I used to submit sports cards to PSA, SGC, and BGS decades ago. You are correct on declaring the subjectivity of the process. It does come down to the persons grading the item. I have a few 70's issues I plan on submitting to CGC, but simply for keeping in my personal collection. I'm gladly subbing to your channel. I have seen 9.8s that are not centered, have a lot of spin tics, have binding that is misaligned and yet I can find a 9.6 that has no evidence of this. At the end I'm gonna buy the 9.6, it's half the price and looks better
@spinnerrackstudios

Interesting video. The color rubs you showed at the end of the video are unacceptable at 9.8 in my opinion. I have 9.6's that befuddle me as to why they are not 9.8's and vice versa. Quite honestly, why people chase 9.8's and pay exorbitant prices for them is beyond me, because the difference between a 9.8 and 9.6 is so negligible that it borders on silliness, especially when considering the inherent subjectivity of grading.

This was very helpful for finding key back issues on eBay. I always ask for plenty of pictures that cover the whole comic book. I don't just settle for auction photos already uploaded, per your advice from another video. I'd rather pay the 9.8 slab than get a raw copy and throw money away. But now, I know what to look for. I've always passed on copies with that spine color rub, but now I know that it is negligible. Although I've seen 9.6 slabs that I swear looked like a 9.8. Given it doesn't have interior issues, I wonder why the "judgement" of the book can differ so much with a 9.8 that can look like a 9.4.

Great video the two defects that I personally don't consider ever achieving a 9.8 is multiple spine ticks/color break and color Rub I consider those a 9.6 or lower, if I'm paying a lot of money to get that 9.8 book I always buy from someone on eBay that allows returns as if I get a 9.8 book that I paid 200, $300 or more for and it has either those defects I'm returning the book I don't consider it personally a 9.8 on the flipside I've gotten a lot of 9.8 books that are virtually Flawless and should be higher grades so at the end of the day there's low 9.8 grades and high 9.8 grades it's all what you're comfortable with what you collect if you're a 9.8 collector. Another great note a lot of books that were graded pre-2008 9.4 and 9.6 we're graded very strict back in the day I actually purchased some I've seen in person at conventions and have cracked open resubmitted and got it back graded 9.8

It’s not how they come off the press, they are put together in a bindery, usually on a stitcher. We used to run dc and Archie comics where I used to work. It’s usually from dull blades and machines running too fast, too slow, or jamming up.
@Supertomscustoms

CGC removed their more detailed grading criteria (which was basically Overstreet) a couple years ago because they didn’t want to have to explain themselves when they make mistakes. When they’re looking at anything over an 9.0 it should no longer be subjective. A spine tick is a spine tick. 1/16” is 1/16”. There should be nothing to debate.

I agree with @ThereCanBeOnlyVaughn I had a 9.8 Ultimate Fallout #4 with several spine ticks I felt was a 9.6 or less, and I had a 9.6 Darth Vader #3 Larocca Variant with virtually no visible flaws that I was sure would come back 9.8. There was no notes given on either. A CGC grader has also said they spend less than 1 minute on each book, so they're not exactly pouring over every detail, and I kind of doubt their claim that 3 people always look at each book...They're only human, I don't expect them to be perfect all the time, but their 3-person redundancy is meant to be a net for errors, and sometimes it seems like more slips through than is reasonable. Although admittedly, there is also a natural negative bias here, in the sense that I (and most collectors) probably focus much more on perceived errors than successes, so that the exact level of CGC's inconsistency is hard to determine. Your video still seems like a good general guideline for what might be allowed in a 9.8, so thanks for making it. I have another idea for a video, if you haven't done it: find some 9.9's or 10.0 if possible and the nicest 9.8's and see if you can find any difference. I bet no one has ever resubmitted a 9.9 (lol), but if they did, I'd bet a large amount it would come back 9.8. Given that there are 9.8's you can find with virtually no visible defect, I have doubts CGC can consistently grade a 9.9-10.0 without knocking it to a 9.8. I could be wrong, but that's how I feel.

First, a couple of critiques: How can we say they have the industry standard for grading.... when we don't know their grading criteria?? lol. They are the industry standard in terms of brand recognition, but calling them the standard for grading cannot be done until we have a transparent grading criteria made public. You stated the Thor 4 probably would not hit a 9.8 if it was coupled with any other defects, simply because it had the waves, yet right before that you showed the MTU 141, that had multiple spine ticks, waves, AND that front corner crinkle. According to everything else you showed off and the standards that you are assuming, that MTU 141 should be no higher than a 9.6. Now that I'm done giving you a hard time (lol), really great job on the vid man. You've done your homework and presented your findings in a very sound way. Still, I think it's a shame that WE have to play detective in order to find out what CGC's grading process is. Ultimately, I'm not as optimistic as you are with their consistency, and as they continue to grow, I absolutely do believe that transparency will be needed in order for them to sustain themselves. Great work man. Just found your channel as well, so keep on putting in the good work!

Yes, 14! 2 of the spine ticks are very large, over 1/4" and the other approaches 1/2", the rest are all around 1/8th". I have a cgc 9.6 of the same book that looks far better with no notes from graders. I am baffled why the one copy is a 9.8. Total inconsistency of grading standards and it is very frustrating.
