SITUATIONAL REINFORCEMENT:
🤔 So what, exactly, do I mean by this? I mean that unlike an assembly line, a “one size fits all” approach is likely to be detrimental to the learning experience, whether your learner is canine, human, or otherwise. We all bring a variety of factors to our learning encounters, including our environmental backgrounds, our learning histories/experiences, our particular talents with individual skills, our cultural and genetic factors, and our own attitudes regarding the learning process.
🤔 Slow is magic! Especially with dogs who may have missed out on positive early life training exposure and aren’t quite sure what is expected when a human directs them to perform behaviors they have little experience with, despite the promise of a treat. Letting the dog figure out what I’m asking for on her own time and terms is critical and MUCH better than insisting! (We call this “agency,” or choice.)
🤔 Not much is known about Lucy’s background. She’s about 2 years old; her human died while Lucy was pregnant; and she gave birth to 9 puppies outside without human help just before she was rescued by @milosdogrescueofsouthflorida. I can tell you as a professional trainer, she had little/no basic obedience manners training before she was rescued, but that’s OK. My primary job is showing dogs (and their people) how much fun and how rewarding training can be, no matter what’s in their past!
🤔 I’m definitely going to give Lucy time to figure out what I’m asking of her, and when she gets “stuck,” I’m going to help her out, give her hints, and reinforce her heavily when she does “get it.” I want her to become “addicted” to training, and view it as a fun, exciting game that she can’t wait to do, and feels challenged, fulfilled, and mentally stimulated by our daily training sessions!
🤔 Lucy is available for adoption and is eager to begin the next chapter in her life. She’s incredibly affectionate, is awesome with both dogs and humans, and can’t wait to make some lucky person/family proud with all she is capable of! She truly is the definition of a sweetheart 💖!
