The “perishable skill” part is so true. My puppy is about to turn 5 and this past week he’s been listening way less than when he was 3 months. It just means going back to the basics and rehearsing those more.

Towards the end of 4 months almost5 my goldendoodles behavior started changing and i have become Frustrated with him so this is timely and I absolutely believe in crating still and leashing him and staying firm in boundaries

We have been experiencing a sudden burst of jumping up from our 13 month German shepherd just this week. Great to know how it is related to age and will work on teaching him not to again.

How is it now? My German shepherd just started this phase and is now starting to test boundries. She is mainly ignoring me inside the house, jumping on the couch and refusing to get off, she is also refusing to go outside when I tell her to. She stops in the kitchen and just sits there 🤦‍♀️ It feels like I'm losing a battle with her. I got really frustrated one day and it rubbed off on her unfortunately. But I've recently adjusted my training and have began working on things that make her follow me more and am starting to work on boundries again, but it's hard. It feels like we backtracked and I'm just hoping we can get through it successfully.

My dog is now 1 year old. I have been training him since 3 months old. He has always been reactive to other dogs but now past 3 weeks suddenly he is being reactive towards people. I am at a loss and have no idea what to do. I am clearly not being a good leader for my dog.

So great to see this. Our 7-month old flat-coated retriever is still on a house line and in obedience classes learning over and over. Smart dog, but still learning. It’s good to see that the learning goes on. I love the phrase “perishable skills.” That feels perfect for the situation. Thanks.

My 8 month of female Rottweiler has started this alllllll. It’s been terrible 😮 can’t even take her out or have guests over she’s not aggressive at all she’s to playful and naughty. But now that I’ve seen this I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and now it’s crunch time and training time all over again

I really needed this video now. My 7.5 month old puppy started to not listen to me outside and her focus is so bad right now and I felt kinda frustrated and also like a failure. Seems like we are butting the long line back on to make both of us less frustrated!

Excellent teachings here I relate to it I found my dog pushing boundaries when off leash she would not come when called she trying see how far she could go before I followed her to get her come back. I had not used food for a year to reward and all sudden last week when I used slice ham she immediately came when I called her. Great vid here for people seeing their dog pushing boundaries

You’re right. Araya was doing great off line on my property. Yesterday, she regressed. I went after her, pointed to our deck and said “home”. Several times. She did go up on the deck, shut the gate and wouldn’t let her on the property for the rest of the day. She still had “her yard” but now, going back to carrying treats!

My mini golden doodle puppy is about 3 months old & I taught her the word Treat so if it’s something I need her to do or not do really quick I can holler TREAT & she will drop what’s in her mouth or come running or stay or anything really quick for me for a Treat and it has helped a lot & of course I don’t do it all the time just when I have to.

I do have to say that we had really well behaved dogs when I was a kid. But we had one that when you used a coarse tone with her or hurt her feelings, then left the house, you would come home to find an item of yours that she had chewed and left in the middle of the living room. We had 4 people at home, but she always chose an item of the person who had been coarse with her or hurt her feelings! It happened rarely, but I think she knew what she was doing!❤❤❤❤

She is very strong. She is still on a lead. Pulling, barking, especially after I say stop really frustrated me. My frustration is especially strong when I work with her to not jump or climb on people and they let her anyway. They claim she is so cute and loving. Well, that cute and loving pup is now 7 months, weighs 60 pounds and these same people complain when she climbs all over them. Sorry, on a rant. When people counter my commands and my dog listens because it is what she wants to do I can’t stand it.

Hear! Hear! I have a boxer x approaching 5mths. People will actually leave the walking path, walk across a decent stretch of lawn, where I'm keeping him at minimum safe distance, in order to engage (try to) with him. On more than 1 occassion it has been a family of children and parents and one mother said they had one the same age at home but couldnt take it out due to reactivity, jumping etc, they were waiting for it to grow out of these things. : / edit: training ppl is harder than training dogs.

I find that so difficult too. My dog has always been hyper excited about people ever since the first day I met him, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the people close to me that I can train with have no patience and just give in when he barks at or wants to jump on them. It doesn’t matter what I tell them. So the only options I have right now is that he greets people in the most chaotic way possible or he doesn’t get to greet others at all. Truly exhausting. And makes me sad for his sake, it’s not the kind of owner I want to be for him. 😔

Even if people let your dog jump on them, you still had the option to stop the jumping and correct it. Training is about consistency

Don’t give the food until they demonstrate good behavior. I use leave it command when they stay still even when the food is front of them then I give the okay to eat.

Is it possible that I may have been spoiling my dog with too much attention after just adopting him? He is a 3 month old lab pup and at all times that I am awake he is too, never resting unless I also try and sleep. That is good for at night since he actually sleeps all the way through but when I get off of work and need to do some other things around the apartment I have a hard time with how clingy he is. Now I understand he is a puppy so he will obviously have a lot of energy so I walk him about 5-6 times a day with most of those being shorter walks just to go potty and I also engage him in play inside the apartment, but even after all of that he still just won't shut his cute little eyes for a nap despite clearly wanting to do so. My sister suggested I am somewhat conditioning him to think that he will always have my full attention and that I should practice ignoring him just a little bit for short periods of time where I feel that he should rest. It seemed to work yesterday after about 30 minutes of catching him biting on the base boards or putting him back down after trying to jump on my computer chair. He is my first puppy that I have owned solo and just wishing to teach him the best.

It sounds like you need to crate train him - having a small safe cosy place without diistractions will help him settle down to sleep
@schlootle
@schlootle Год назад
@@LucyAliceMoss i don't think I've done the best job crate training him. He sleeps pretty good in it at night and I think he does fine when I crate him when I leave for work but he never wants to hang out in there when I'm home. I leave the door open, feed him in there sit next to it and give him treats when he goes inside. He doesn't refuse to go in but immediately tries to leave when I begin to close the crate. I was adverse to crating him when I'm home since he is kept in there for a long while during the night and when I'm gone for work. But if it is normal to do so then I may try to introduce it to him

Crate train them or a puppy pen! It's hard for them to regulate themselves at that age.

Just to clarify, so if my puppy ignores me when I call his name and he’s on a long line, what do I do? Do I pull him towards me and then give him a treat?
@bethmorano1452
@bethmorano1452 Год назад
I’ve had this question as well. I learned from my lab owner friends that when you call your puppy and they ignore you, you never treat them if you have to go to them or you need to pull them to you. You will praise them or treat them when they do the right thing. They learn real fast that doing so will earn them love and a treat. I have made my mistakes and just remember, you don’t want to make them come to you out of fear. When they are older like my 7 month old, it’s the same. She is always on a lead outside. She knows a lot of commands and if she fails to obey consistently, sometimes I call off the outside time and we go back inside. Never in anger. If you can’t change the behavior, change the environment whether it is going inside, going in the crate for a time out or going outside to run off destructive energy. Believe me, I have made mistakes but my lab and I love each other, we forgive each other and tomorrow is another day.

yes pull them to you quickly so they correlate that to being called. treat them when they do it on their own.
