An exciting new addition to the historical fashion collection, an early 1820s printed cotton day dress. It is a great example of the transitional dressmaking of the early 19th century combining 18th-century techniques with new styles and technology.

Gorgeous piece- that print is fabulous ! It is amazing to me the use of pins in historical dress….something so foreign to us today. Do you ever see localized textile damage from all that daily pinning?

Yes! You can see it in this piece. It is normally clusters of pin holes. On this specific piece it is rather subtle, which is interesting- maybe it wasn’t worn a lot for some reason?

An interesting look at early dresses and their construction. Thank you.

Some dresses that I left hanging in a closet for a few years faded much the same way your dress did. Those dresses were not left hanging in the sunlight,. so I suspected that chemicals in the plaster and paint that was inside the closet may have 'outgassed' , or whatever you would call that process, destroying the color.

I thought it was going to go for more… I told my friends that I “accidentally won”. No regrets though.

@@costumeandconservation I forgot to set an alarm to bid and I was so sad it went for so little and I missed out on it - but also now I'm no longer sad because it went to you!

Would it be more correct to call this gown a garment, not a costume? Given it was a real person's everyday item of clothing - rather than costume - which would imply they would put it on to look like someone else/ different fashion period. 🤔

The term “costume” is used as a catch-all term for dress/garment in the field. We tend to use “fancy dress” when taking about Halloween/ theatrical costumes. It’s a bit confusing. The terminology originated in the UK were a lot of the early dress history scholarship took place.
