That would be nice. The Constitution limits the Federal government to provide only a few basic services ( Article 1 section 8): the military, post office, roads, courts and jails. In total the spending for mandated services is about $ 800 Billion per year. Feds spend $4.7 Trillion now. All that money is taken from we the people and some is borrowed from people that aren't even born yet. Government does nothing well except waste money.

It's not just low-income earners, either. It really depends on how much income is even taxable (e.g. some pensions and retirement plans, most military allowances, etc.) I don't agree that the poorest Americans should be taxed, but taxes need to start lower down on the financial ladder and rise a lot more steeply on the upper rungs.

The standard deduction should be $50,000. The personal exemption of $3500 that they got rid of was enacted in 1913. It's original intent was to protect a now inflation adjusted $78,000 of a person's income so they could pay living expenses. Thus, the person would only be taxed after their personal bills and living expenses were paid. Therefore, a standard deduction of $50,000-$70,000 would keep up the same purpose of the recently repealed personal exemption.

Retirees have been paying in on the money they contributed to Social Security. That portion doesn't need to pay because they are living off of previously taxed income. If they have IRAs, for example, that contribute significantly to their income, they pay taxes on that. Just saying that for those who wish to complain about that sector erroneously. Would be nice to be able to earn enough to pay Federal taxes.
@TheGeorgiaGent
@TheGeorgiaGent 6 лет назад
B uppy Correct. Double taxation. Ssme also can be said for everything else. Housing, gas, utilities, etc, are all taxed after federal income and state taxes. So, we pay the taxes, and get taxed again when we spend the money left over after paying taxes. It's cancerous. Oh..that S.S. contribution was spent on another gov't program decades ago.
@b_uppy
@b_uppy 6 лет назад
TheGeorgiaGent Yes. I get ticked off when I hear someone saying that there isn't enough money in Social Security to keep it going and the payee is the one that has to pay further by postponing retirement, etc. The source of the problem is the politicians' greedy raids on the program that wasn't supposed to be touched by them when the program was enacted. One of the purveyors of this notion has since desisted but not without causing harm...
@garrettstevensen2467
@garrettstevensen2467 5 лет назад
Quote: "If they have IRAs, for example, that contribute significantly to their income, they pay taxes on that." 100% factually incorrect statement. A Roth IRA is not subject to income taxes. One could argue that the retiree already paid taxes on the earnings previously, but again, that is a completely irrelevant argument if a person only makes a few thousand annually, and doesn't have to pay income taxes on that small/minor income. I personally know people who have done this for decades.

I really do not understand, why most of people think that those who do not pay federal portion of tax pay no tax at all?! People pay state tax, sales tax, local tax, Medicare tax, social security tax, etc. Also, why most of people think that only poor, lazy, or disabled people do not pay tax? Example: a median household income in the U.S. for 2016 is $59,039. Family of 5 (2 parents and 3 children) would have to pay tax from $26,039 after all deductibles. Tax would be around $3,000. Take into account a child tax credit 3x$1,000 = $3,000. Net federal tax payment is $0. Do you consider this family to be poor, disable, or lazy?

1 out of every 10 workers is an illegal here in the USA. Labor is a commodity. The more workers, the less pay per hour. Both major political parties have helped create our mess.
@ethanlculver
@ethanlculver 5 лет назад
Dave forgets an important perspective here. The wealth gap has increased to very unhealthy level in America. At some point of inequality, society collapses and the underclass will revolt. We don't want to go there. No one should want to go there. The rich have continued to become richer and the middle class has shrunk in the past few decades. Taxes have been slashed for the rich and corporations. You see percentages like 25%, 33%, but wealthy individuals can evade that tax in so many different ways, so those numbers aren't even accurate. I'm not saying just "tax the wealthy more" is the answer, but we do have a problem, and you need to admit that, and we need to figure out how to solve that problem. The reason why the rich are getting so much richer and destabilizing society isn't because poor people are paying zero in taxes. That's hogwash!

I somewhat agree with Dave on this one. However, when you look at the tax code, a family of four, using the standard deduction, making around $50k pays little or no taxes due the standard deductions the qualify for. Up to two years ago, if you itemized and had more deductions you could still not pay taxes with a higher income. The new tax laws changed this somewhat. Dave, who obviously makes a lot more money can claim these same deductions and probably a lot more than are available to the 50% that don’t. I, personally, make more than $50 k a year and pay what is required and live quite comfortably. The real question is would you rather live on $50k a year and pay no taxes or make a $1.0M a year and pay $350k in taxes and live on $650k?

However, it's rare that both make the same amount. It's usually one spouse makes a larger income. Especially if they are in the middle of having children. Also based on the number I could find from the BLS it was closer to 60%.

WTH Dave? I've paid at least some tax every year that I've worked since I was 14. And the first few years were just summer jobs while still in school. I didn't pay much, but it was my fair share back then. I'm like you, everyone should pay their fair share, even if it is just .01 cent. Of course, I believe that healthcare didn't go crazy until the government got into it with medicare & medicaid, and college costs didn't go crazy until the government started giving student loans. All the people wanting everything for free need a little history (Soviet Union / Cuba) or some current events (Venezuela) to see what happens when you socialize everything. I know liberals all want us to be the Nordic countries, but they aren't socialists - They are market economies with Welfare benefits for everyone. That system is doable, but with even crazier taxes than the US has. If you want everything free, remember it still has to be paid for, and there aren't enough rich folks to fund it all, in other words more taxes for everyone.

The fact that 50% of Americans don't pay income taxes is just a sign of how fragile the US economy is at the moment. The reason why so many Americans don't pay income taxes is because US government view these people as "low income", The government makes an exception for these people and allows them to pay zero federal income taxes so they can put that extra money back into the economy. The United States would not be where it stands today if it was run off of " Donations " and quite frankly the United States has some of the most lax tax laws out of any developed country in the world. If you have to pay taxes you don't want too, That's cool and all, Just go live in another country, good luck finding one as developed as the United States with less taxes.

There are so many sides to this issue and you did a fair job of assessing them. I know it must hurt to look at your tax bill and literally be paying millions of dollars into the government. However, thank God, you do have millions of dollars to pay in. I also agree that if you are working a full time job and still barely affording food, you probably should not be paying taxes. Where I start to get upset is when I have an employee come to me (after I have given them a raise) and ask to work less hours because they no longer qualify for their food stamps or other benefits. We shouldn't be giving people incentive to be lazy. I cannot get behind that at all.

It’s due to the poverty in America that nobody talks about. The struggling hard working class people who don’t make enough to support their family and are forced to take less pay in order to get the government assistance. Not everyone on government assistance wants to use it but many are forced because the extra $2 in pay can’t support the family however denies them any help they need. Either take less pay or work multiple jobs to maintain is how they see it.
@juliephelps7616
@juliephelps7616 6 лет назад
Shannon Johnson I saw my grandmother be denied so you are not saying nothing new. I have been on both sides myself. I received help for 6 months for my daughter after I divorced. My mother raised me to work hard, earn your way in life she would say. If I had done what many do, take a lower paying job I could have had my daycare paid for instead of the 200 per month and received Medicaid instead of paying my insurance cost for my daughter. So again where is the incentive for the ones who are on assistance to do more for their self. By working for 7.00 per hour at the time instead of the 4.25 minimum wage I got the privilege of paying daycare myself, plus the 75.00 per month in extra health insurance for my daughter, so in the end I earned less than minimum wage, no help with food stamps, daycare, medical or prescriptions, because I earned 15 dollars per month over the limit. And if I dared ask for less hours or declined to work the extra hours forced on us by the company I worked for, which we did not get time and a half because if an obsecure agriculture loophole I would have been fired. So I see both sides, personally I feel all benefits should have to be reported as a source if income because those who have to pay do not receive a break on their taxes like healthcare premiums, but those who receive it for free are basically getting a raise on their annual income due to the stipend they receive in assistance.

@@willoughbykrenzteinburg You and Thomas Jensen are both correct in your individual perspectives. It was Irvin (Irwin Schiff ?)who studied the matter intensely and revealed through his writings the scam that was foisted on the American people, the bogus nature of the "income tax" and the illegal enforcement tactics that were and have been employed to collect it. Willoughby, you are correct in your pragmatic assessment that there is no point to die for a lost cause. It's too late, it has been in force for much too long and cannot be undone. The founding fathers bound and chained the government with excise, imposts and duties as legitimate funding to perform certain enumerated duties and only those duties. The government broke out of those binders and grew into a "monster" and that monster is now dependent on every source it has had, plus the deficit spending it has pursued. We are now faced with a world economy that has grown to unsustainable limits, has grown to those limits on credit and is a bubble so large and so fragile that it could burst at any moment. The prospects of such an occurance are truly frightening. The govt. put Schiff in prison and kept him confined until he died, as a dramatic example to anyone who dares to follow!
