FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

It's super easy to critique sitting and watching the video but actually doing it is really confusing and everyone needs to practice and figure it out. Very difficult stuff and I thought you did an excellent job for your first time in a new airplane. You’re killing it.

Hi Flight Chops, I popped in a few times on your blog, and mentioned all the Stearman time I had. I see you're getting serious about flying. I did airobatics in my Stearman only as far as it would fly upside down, until it ran out of fuel. The inverted spin is nothing like the Pitts, you couldn't hold the stick far enough forward, because it wanted to through you out of the cockpit. I had to roll it inverted, kick rudder and put my other foot on the stick and push, while holding the side tubing. It was more like a gyration than a spin. Have fun, but be safe and always check around for any other planes. Bob

Thanks for taking us along for a ride in the Pitts, looking forward to the Landing episode! I noticed the landscape looks the same in all directions - except for the roads. It would be easy to get lost in terrain like that, especially if you are focussed on technique and not maintaining an awareness of where you are.

Years ago, when 'Tricky Dick' was earning his moniker, I flew a Decathlon crosscountry for several hours to Phoenix. Navigation was easy: I simply followed Interstate 10 from Palm Springs…through the skylight. (The plane had been modified with a Christensen inverted oil system and temporary inverted fuel system.) Regrettably, there were no GoPros available then, and my camera plane lost sight of my plane not long after rolling inverted, so I don't have much to show for the effort. I'm delighted to see how you're using GoPros and other film and audio technology in your flying, and will use your ideas in my flying (but without the use of a skylight). You're doing a splendid job! Bon vols, John #BoseA2

Thanks for ANOTHER great video!! I'm a nonpilot with no desires to actually become a pilot (sissy), but have always been fascinated with planes. Through your videos, I can get as close to flying without actually flying (again, no desire to be a pilot). I have always wondered what it would be like to pilot a plane, and through your videos I am able to witness and feel the thrills of what it's like with none of the danger (to me). You're videos always delight (again, still no desire to be a pilot, but can't wait till your next video)!

I've only ever flown in a simulator but, whenever I fly upside down I don't think in my head that I'm upside down. Instead I think I'm rightside up and the earth is above me. Then you can fly and turn somewhat normally. Just a little mental trick.

If you liked this (and you looked like you did :)), you should definately try glider aerobatics as well if you ever have the chance. For me it feels just more pure, subtle and immersive mainly because you don't have this roaring engine in front and you don't need to wear anything on top of your head (by the way - looks like #BoseA20 without any additional straps served the purpose there) but I agree, that powered aerobatics is hell lot of fun too :) Take care and I'm keeping fingers crossed for your IR and ME training, cause I'm in the same boat right now :)

Really? That would be great if that would help mine. Presume you get it from your local chemist? (Pharmacist).What sort of amounts or dosage? I've always struggled with motion sickness, car then planes although I found the more I flew the better I was but still its very frustrating. It has I think put me off unusual attitudes, not the fear of being upside down but more fear I'm going to throw up!
@bazwabat1
@bazwabat1 6 лет назад
You did well to keep at it. I actually had to use a bag during my introductory flight! But I was usually ok unless it was really bumpy or hot or got any negative G on. Blind flying was a bit of a killer at times!

@Mythricia1988 6 лет назад
Wow, I am glad I stumbled onto this comment chain. I have really awful motion sickness (Including cars), and I went for a glider plane intro flight recently. It was fine until we started doing thermals, then it was time-out for me. I'll have to look into this too! I don't think it was disorientation (I have no problem with really busy/chaotic motion if my body itself is stationary), I think it was the G's.

@TheWhiteOwl23

Usually if YOU are at the controls, it helps a little bit since most movement is what you are doing, so you can anticipate what is happening. So if you start feeling ill all you have to do is fly straight and level while being at the controls. Other than that you will get used to it over time, eventually. Oh and if the plane has fresh airflow from a vent or A/C, blast that in your face, nothing sobers me up more than cold fresh air.

#BoseA20 Hey Steve, this is rad! I can't believe I'm just discovering you now. I grew up in Burlington Ontario and currently living at the St. Andrews dorms and flying that same Citabria, ZKC. In fact I was training while this video was uploaded but I don't remember this day. Currently home studying for CPL exams but will be training with Luke for some aerobatics as soon as I get back. Currently I run an ancient headset with no active noise cancelling. I'm definitely well in need of an upgrade but am torn between active and passive noise cancelling. My main worry is that with active I won't be able to hear crucial noises such as the stall horn or a change in engine sound. It seems most pilots prefer active, and my instructor even uses #BoseA20 's. I still can't help but wonder, does my concern make sense?

A transparent cover to check for the unobstructed elevator push-rod control continuity to the stick. Any foreign object getting there (e.g., whatever falls out from passengers' pockets during aerobatic manouvers, phones, keys, Swiss Army knives), would risk jamming the elevator control, essentially leading to a crash. .Check NTSB Identification: DEN03FA034 for Yak/52 accidents for the same reasons.

As usual, trully great video. This time I was even more happy as I got to see you trying to sort out those rudder inputs during ailerons rolls... I have been trying to master it for the last 2 years now, here in the south of France with a very special air club I am part of, which dedicated to aerobatics (voltige in french :p) training and competition practice. You can check it out here www.midipyreneesvoltige.net/ (sorry only in french). We fly a Mudry CAP 10C for the training and then advanced practice is on Extra 200 and 330 (which you already now :) ). I hope one day you cross the Atlantic and see how it is done here!
