Almost entirely black wolf pack in northern Minnesota

This wolf pack is almost entirely black wolves, which is quite rare for Minnesota! Of course, this is not to say it does not happen, but rather that it is definitely not the norm. For reference, black wolves make up 1.5-2% of wolves in Minnesota based on data in the state from 1980 to 2020.
There is some indication that black wolves in Minnesota have increased in prevalence a bit over the past 70 years or so. In the Superior National Forest, only 4 out of 580 wolves that were legally hunted or trapped by three conservation officers before 1960 were black. By the late 1960s, black wolves made up 3.6 percent of wolves in the same area. Whether this indicates a biologically meaningful or even a statewide trend is hard to say but definitely is intriguing.
Notably, the pack in the video is not in our study area-the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem-but just outside of it! A member of the public shared the footage with us and we thought it quite exceptional given the prevalence of black wolves. The most black wolves in a pack we have documented is 1. I.e., we have never captured anything like this!
On a different note, we will be relatively quiet on social media until after the holidays. We are taking some time away to be with family, relax, and disconnect! We will be back to posting regularly come 2022! Thanks again for everyone’s interest in our work and Happy Holidays to everyone from all of us at the Voyageurs Wolf Project!

they're absolutely gorgeous! thank you for sharing this footage! I love that the black wolves still have noticeable patterns in their fur, I always imagined black wolves as entirely black (and seeing black timber wolves without noticeable fur patterns in a zoo last summer didn't help) so this completely throws that misconception out of the window, thank you for that ^^
@jungblud59
@jungblud59 2 года назад
Black wolves are actually not timber wolves, they're dark phase, or black phase gray wolves. But I agree, they are beautiful animals. I've got a pack of gray wolves living in the area where I have my cabin in northeast Wisconsin, I saw a dark phase (not entirely black) once several hundred yards from the cabin, another time I saw a black phase, entirely black, it was most stunning! October of 2020 I was actually lucky enough to record them howling from 3 or 4 different directions.

@@jungblud59 I may be wrong cuz I'm definitely no expert on animals but I think you can get a black wolf of any breed. Could the black coat come in the form of a mutation? Like albino. Or maybe like a black jaguar. My guess is a black coat can come passed down from the gene pool and also can come from a random genetic mutation in any random breeding ? But again, I'm no expert by any means.
@jungblud59
@jungblud59 2 года назад
@@swappedoutZ71 I've never considered myself expert on animals either, but I have studied animals quite a bit on my own. I'm sure you are probably correct that any wolf can have a black coat, it just makes sense,, although I've never heard or seen any evidence of it. That doesn't imply that I don't think it has happened, I personally just haven't seen it. The Latin name of the gray wolf is canis lupus, the Latin name of Timberwolves is canis lupus lycaon. I've read that Timberwolves are the same species as gray wolves, I've also read that Timberwolves are a subspecies of gray wolf. I have the tendency to believe that they are a subspecies because of the sub specie name canis lupus lycaon. It is believed that the black coloration in the modern grey wolves is a hereditary factor as you said, but, it also dates back to when Europeans were bringing dogs over to North America many of them black, and sometimes they got loose, turned feral and started interbreeding with the gray wolves, which is where people believe the black fur pigment came from originally.
@stinky3717
@stinky3717 2 года назад
Hi! I think the “patterns” you’re noticing are just areas where the undercoat of the wolf is beginning to clump and shed. I could be wrong, but I’ve owned two black German Shepherds in my life and in the springtime this is exactly how their coats looked. Kinda scruffy, and the clumps of undercoat may seem like a dusty grey or brown color. I’m pretty sure that’s just dirt and other debris collecting in their old undercoat
@snowflakeserpert6834
@snowflakeserpert6834 2 года назад
@@swappedoutZ71 I'm not sure if that mutation is the case here, but there is a black-color mutation that appears in many animals, melanism. It's an overabundance of melanin, the pigment in an animal, which is the complete opposite of albinism.

Most of the black wolves you see in the west and midwest can be traced back to a singular black wolf that was offspring of some of the relocated wolves that went to Yellowstone. One male and now that black gene is more common than the normal coat in some areas.

It's like they move as if they were soldiers. A scout out in front, followed by a pair of troops almost together. A third troop moves up to a flank, and is leapfrogged by a fourth troop that takes the opposite flank. The third trooper then follows behind, covering the rear. They all paused at the edge of the little clearing to have a look around before they disappeared into the brush, too. Relaxed, yet coordinated movement like that is probably instinctual for them. They make it look effortless though. EDIT: damn they're tall!

I live in Western Oregon, Lane County in the Southern Willamette Valley. Last summer on the 4th of July, I was driving on remote roads in the densely forested, extremely rugged Oregon Coast Range near the Smith River and I am 100% positive I saw an all black wolf. It was on the road a way ahead of me, paused, turned to look at my car, then like a ghost, disappeared into the underbrush and splashed across the Smith River. There is a known wolf pack, a small one that has established itself in the southeast corner of Lane County near the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. I think that this wolf came from that pack, and somehow ranged across Interstate 5 to the southwest area of Lane County. I reported the siting and the precise location to ODFW. There hasn't been wolves in the Oregon Coast range for a long, long time, but perhaps they are finding a way to reestablish a presence there.

They are not confined to the borders on the map. They move freely, and they can travel farther than you can imagine, devastating any ungulate population in their path. Snare a wolf, save a moose, deer, or elk. 😉

@@eatem Unlike us, they only kill to survive. They will not risk their well-being trying to take down strong, healthy prey, unless absolutely necessary. @eatem
@eatem 2 года назад
@@lauraheddin6973 I regret to inform you that you have fallen victim to misinformation. Wolves kill for sport. For fun. They will wipe out entire herds of ungulates. I have seen it happen where I live, more than once. They devastate the ungulate population, and move on to a new area. I agree that humans are in part to blame for this, as we have created easy long distant travel via logging or forestry access roads. If wolves are left unchecked, they can (and do) destroy ungulate population. Again, I've seen mountains with healthy deer populations absolutely decimated, and I know what wolf sign looks like. We, as humans, are also part of nature. It is our duty ensure that wolf populations don't explode. We are a predatory species. Predator animals (all of them) keep each other in check. Wolves will even kill wolves. They will eat their wounded. I will stop "educating" you now, as it's likely a waste of time. These are facts, feel free to check them and get back to me.

@@eatem EDITED!!! Sorry. My granddaughter changed and sent my response when I set my phone down...😆 We are both guilty of speaking in generalizations. There are no absolutes with this species. We are both wrong, and we are both right. The truth probably lies in the middle. I, too, am very well educated on wolves, as well as you. I have studied them in the wild. I have raised them, before it was illegal to do so. (yes, I am old) My husband and I have spent most of our time in the wilderness. I get most of my information in the wilds, not online. Yes, wolf packs do fight and kill other packs, over territory, etc.. They kill the injured and diseased within their pack, to keep the pack strong and to keep disease and parasites from spreading to other pack members. There are reasons for their kills, and it is not "just for fun". People don't always understand why they kill, but good research does. There is something that I would like to ask you. Did you actually see the wolves take down the kills? Most of the time, like I said before, they attack the weak or injured. They will also steal kills, causing other predators to kill more. There are some wolves that do seem to kill for fun, but they are usually not a member of a pack. We could go back and forth like this, but for what? We are both right.

The prevalence of more black wolves in Minnesota goes hand in hand with an increase in the Wolf population in general over the last 20 years I imagine.

The way I have always heard it is that there is more likely to be a prevalence of Black Wolves in Old Growth forests with thick canopies and very little sunlight. Basically, their coats help camouflage them from the animals they are trying to eat.

Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️!!!!!!! Protect their habitat. Xmas Eve I came home late to twinkling stars and the yipping and howling of coyotes. Was such a beautiful sound to hear. Three years ago, people went around and hunted them all down, wiped them out practically. My heart broke seeing trucks filled with their bodies and their pups shot on the highways. Wolves and Yotes are NOT a problem, humans are. No respect for nature. Thank you for sharing ❤️

💯 You are absolutely correct!!! Wolves are necessary for a healthy ecosystem. People call them killers, but they only kill what they need to survive, and target the old, weak, diseased, injured, etc., which improves the herd(prey). What do humans do? They trophy hunt!!!😖😤😠😡🤬 which weakens the herd!!! 🐾🐾❤🐺❤🐺❤🐾🐾

What an incredible sight you managed to capture. Wolves are so misunderstood and persecuted when really they deserve our admiration and respect.

How many/what kind of dogs would one need to effectively fend off a pack of wolves? Wolves kill domestic dogs with ease.

Look up a breed of livestock Guardian dog called the Manga Dog that has been protected sheep & Goats from Bears& wolves for Two thousand years Turkey & has been known as the wolf Ctusher like All Dogs in the Livestock Guardian Breeds has been known as wolf killers& also a reason to leave the the livestock alone like what Shepherds in Germany used the German Shepherd for. 😉🐺
