Well, let me tell you this, as a customer :). I had some cabinetry fitted about three years ago. I only finished painting the room, and fitters came to get my cabinetry sorted. All morning they worked without extraction vacuum. I offered them my small Karcher but they pointed out that they have extraction with them. I thought it is strange not to use extraction, especially as they were cutting Corian worktops but it is their health... However once they left I got massively upset. My freshly painted walls were all covered in the dust. And this was especially visible on my dark navy blue feature wall. It cost me 4 hours of vacuuming walls from the dust plus I gathered it is better not to breath in this shite. Extraction protects you and environment you work in. It is a good idea to use it :).

I use the disposable bags for my Festool CT36, but I don't throw them out, I just shake the dust out of the hole. The bags are about $100 Canadian for a 5 pack, so I save several hundred a year.
@troyclayton
@troyclayton 5 лет назад
Dust extractors are where it's at. I even have a shroud that lets me hand sand with collection. Festool plastic is too delicate for tools of that price, in my opinion. It's my only complaint about the brand, and it's kept me from buying anything of theirs- as great as they work. edit: Not to mention the time my boss told me to just put a bag on the sander, while I was setting up the extractor. It set the fire alarm off, which was tied into their home security system. Good times. Always extract. We don't use any treated timbers in interior construction here in the US (at least in New England). I'm not sure it's a good idea.

I dig it and would get it (because everyone is pretty much selling it)...but I haven't yet and will probably go with something more affordable to start. I don't know that I need a Ferrari of mobile vacuums to start...but if I was to get some larger, more permanent setup for a garage/shop, then I could see something more "Ferrari" like - cheers

@@rgbking488 another option could be the scaled down Festool CT 15. Essentially a midi scaled down in features and minus the Bluetooth option. Only thing with the 15 is that it doesn't come with an antistatic hose and so I'd source one even going with something like a Cen-tec antistatic hose to avoid the 130 USD price tag for a hose.

As a cabinet maker, after getting my Festool ct26 and making all my tools hook up to it, I will never be able to work with out it. I work beside people who don't have dust extraction and it makes you realise how good it really is having dust extraction. Also for the "throwaway" festool bags I made my own version of the lifetime bag clip from two different sizes of water pipe that slide over each other, I cut the bag open empty it and seal it up with my diy clip and I use a bag for around a year before throwing it out.

and whats the bet all that lovely cancer causing stuff ends up in land fill and into the water table eventually. Nz and Aus have no real treatment, recycling or other such industries as they don't make profit. the majority of recycling goes into landfill too. @BDJappe
@BDJappe 5 лет назад
I got the Festool cyclone trap / pre-filter. (Should work on your model, also on Makita’s vacuum systems with the systainer clamps on top) It’s Festool so it’s arguably overpriced for what it is, but at the same time it saves me money on bags. Especially if you have a lot of router work. You still need to replace the bags once in a while. Not because they are full but because the ultra-fine dust leaves a coating on the inside, clogging up the airflow.

Ryobi 30L Vacuum for $180 from Bunnings will do exactly the same as a Festool for fraction of the price. Wet and dry as well with 240 take off. Mine sucks up brick and Gyprock dust and is normally attached to wall chasers. It has only just died after 5 years of use. Grab one mate for a second vacuum for cleaning up. Keep your Festool attached to your tools and don't be too proud not to buy a cheap Ryobi 🤔

I worked in the building industry in the UK in the 60s when there were no H&S people. On one job 4 men died in a 6 month period. Numerous people, including myself, were injured, many seriously, on that job and others I worked on. The reason many of your colleagues have not be maimed or killed is because of workplace H&S. It's easy to scoff when you work in a safer environment. We didn't scoff at the idea of H&S on our sites. We demanded change in the name of friends killed or maimed.

Dave I fully appreciate where you're coming from. I agree they should make a site safer but when they turn up and almost tell you how to do your job is when they wind everyone up
@joey10-49
@joey10-49 5 лет назад
Dave, no one would want to work on any site that didn't have adequate health and safety but it's no longer about that to these big developers, it's simply about them putting so many unnecessary rules in place that they can deny any liability. For example this summer when the mercury hit 30 degrees 95 percent of these big developments would demand that everyone wear long sleeve shirts, gloves, pants and all aspects of PPE. Should a man hanging doors in that heat be wearing, glasses, ear defenders and steel toe boots? Yes! Of course he should. Should that man be told by someone who sits in an air conditioned office all day that he should be wearing so much clothing he will suffer from heat exhaustion that he can't have any bare skin incase something is spilt and the company could get sued? No! That's the gripe people have, it's just not about health and safety any more it's about big business's putting unreasonable demands on people to cover there own back.

@ron1martens
@ron1martens 5 лет назад
Nevyn starmix impulse are exactly the same as metabo and I think Ramset vacuums. The shape is exactly the same. I do not understand why more carpenters don't use dust extraction. They certainly keep the area clean and free from the fine dust which is not good for anyone. Also cutting treated timber.

@nevyn6071 5 лет назад
@@ron1martens The other brands are starmix vacuums rebranded.
@ron1martens
@ron1martens 5 лет назад
Nevyn interesting how it works. Somehow they ( manufacturers) work together. As you know metabo and hikoki have amalgamated. The metabo cordless planer is the same as the hikoki and previous hitachi cordless planer. Ramset jackhammer is also a carbon copy of Bosch or vice versa. So I'm curious to know where it all started like you mentioned. Perhaps patent lifted. The festool it a different design to starmix. One thing I had a festool and they don't lose much suction when the filters get clogged with fine dust. Gyprock sanding. Until my festool was stolen. Both these vacuums become heavy and bulky so a smaller vacuum may be more ideal for timber cutting and leave the bigger machines for brick or concrete grinding and gyprock sanding.
@nevyn6071

@@ron1martens a small vacuum with a compact cyclone is the ideal solution. Festool and makita are both toying with it.

If u keep at it you will. As a seasoned carpenter it worth. Throwing dust thru a 100 year old house while clients are home isn’t good. Charge more and protect your lungs and ears. Less tedious cleanup.

I'm a carpenter from Switzerland.. You work is great, your relaxed and you have fun with your team.. But you don't work with Bosch stuff ? In Switzerland is Bosch, Festool, Würth and Hilti your first choice. But Dewalt and Milwaukee is not very represented.

Nice job. I just got a Makita guide rail for my router for repeatable grooves/dadoes like fake shiplap. Might get a small cordless Bosch dust extractor and a large cordless starmix batrix (also sold as metabo) class m. Scoring plywood is something I also forgot yesterday. Especially crap ply

Socialism and big brother. I hate that. But I agree that dust extraction should be mandatory. What I’ve found is sub contractors who keep the job site clean…. That use dust extraction…. That plan the job site for organization….. well, these folks turn out higher quality work. I build new homes and I check for cleanliness every day. Here are the biggest advantages of the dust extraction and job site cleanliness. In order of impact to the overall build. 1) customer confidence in your work… we have much happier customers and they are more forgiving when something does go wrong. 2) easier to work on a clean site 3) helps keep work van cleaner and clothing is less dusty…you spread less dust to the surrounding areas and even your home. 4) cost. These expensive quality tools save us time, improve quality, and gain is additional work. My grandfather, Born 1889 liked to say this: Be the first to work and last to leave… be the most productive worker and when everything falls apart, you’ll be the last laid off and the first rehired.

2:20 Absolutely ridiculous. Here in Souther California we have untrained illegal immigrant labor who depress wages and speak no English. They are doing all the building and renovation. They would have just laughed at the inspector over threat of being tossed off site.

As a woodworker I've wondered why chippys don't put a 20-200L bucket/drum with airtight lid piped inline with their vacuum saving heaps of vac bags and change time. it stays onsite nightly and won't be stolen.

Love the channel, but be careful about flying the drone in built up places - lots of rules about not being allowed to fly over other peoples properties or flying over roads, or flying within 5km of an Airport (which is pretty much all of Auckland city). One of these days they're going to crack down on You Tubers.

We just bought at work the first vac. U showed and its expensive as hell and we didn't even buy all the accessories. We only purchased the wall sanding attachment. Its a good vac. It was purchased with covid money my work gets for keeping people working. Otherwise we never would have gotten it and I would be sanding 3 floors of walls.

I remember working on building sites in the mid/late 1980s in the UK and back then H&S was just started to be taken seriously due to the 1,000s of people that where getting killed on building sites etc and now day what happened back then would never be allowed today and today sites are a total different experience

Hey scott Quick question for you, is your vacuum an l class or m class?? I have a vacuum already but its just non big brand. Does the job, i keep it clean but i want a festool with the blue tooth because i use mostly battery,mitre saw track saw etc. Would the l class be alright for this work and cleaning at the end or the m class? Thanks Shane in ireland/cavan

How is that Rockwool stuff any different than asbestos though?
@ashleyw1393
@ashleyw1393 5 лет назад
Woodworking Complex if you mean in the context of how dangerous they are, quite simple. Rockwool fibres are much larger and rougher than asbestos and don’t become embedded in the lungs like asbestos can do.

Rockwool is fiberglass; asbestos is asbestos. The fiberglass is biosoluble - meaning your body readily dissolves and eliminates any fibers.

I don’t understand why so many Europeans/non American builders use festool. Is it cheaper there? Cause it’s outrageously expensive in the states, and especially considering they’re all just hunks of plastic with less than spectacular engineering

Could you show and tell about your scoring tool. It looks like a good one. Do you get many customers wanting the rebate style? I have yet to see that here in the UK. Frank (CarpenterOne3) does some nice tooling ideas. His shooting & edit needs refinement. But the ideas matter.

Gotta have dust extraction or use wet cutting if you're cutting brick or concrete . Nothing fucks me off more than the inconsiderate pricks that let off clouds of concrete/brick dust because they're too lazy to wet-cut. This type of ignorance is way too common in NZ jobsites.

I wondered how long the bags last as the capacity is 15L which isn't a lot? I'd use a bag every few days of work at 15L my existing vacuum is a shop back and its 40L.

Do you guys use MDF in New Zealand? you would have worked with it a lot in Scotland. It is cancerous as hell which is one of the main reasons I believe health and safety are so strict with dust extraction here. I know it is banned in the US but not sure about Australia

hi Scott ,small tip its much faster to do those "rabits" on your table saw ...2 small cuts and youre done ,advantyage is youre not changing all that wood in dust ,i always set up 1 cut run all my board thet set other cut run all again...(its realy easy on those dewalts ....mine is same as yours but run on batteries...) i tried with router ....even with spiral bit take longer than table saw best regards
@BDJappe
@BDJappe 5 лет назад
marek mroz I think for the board He’s installing @9:45 , you’re gonna want to use a router.. For me, my garage sealing is low, so that limits me. Can’t put bigger boards vertically on the tablesaw. However, in an better situation, you have a very good point my friend. I would do it just because I hate the noise my router makes :)
@ScottBrownCarpentry

I use that method from time to time.Super quick! My table saw tends to leave scratch marks on the smoother sheets though, router this time 👍
