We (detectorists) are basically unpaid volunteer garbage collectors. We remove pounds of trash from parks and beaches. Why anyone would stop us is beyond me. 😂🤷

The last time I detected on that sand pit a couple years ago, someone automatically thought that I was doing paid work for the city. At least some people recognize the benefit!

In my state they don't want you to remove super old artifacts. In most state owned parks and other places near me, you can only hunt for modern coins and jewelry. But people breaking rules all the time are what messes it up for everyone else

I have had people call the bylaw office and police on a few occasions. The best day was when a uniformed bylaw officer stood about 20 feet away during the first days of Covid while I was digging in a park. I didn’t notice him at first but he really surprised me. I thought that I was busted . He said “ I have been watching you for two weeks now and I have one question to ask!” I thought that he was going to ask me who gave me permission but his question was ,”Are you finding anything?” He really put me at ease and gave me confidence to remain where I was.

Welcome Aboard! Thanks! I've only had a couple uncomfortable interactions with people like that and they always seem to be inappropriately exerting authority they don't actually have. My interactions with personnel who actually have real municipal authority like Park Rangers, Police or City Parks Employees have always been quite pleasant and they've never caused me any grief. This just shows why we shouldn't let private companies run their own parks..

Here in Rockford, IL the hobby of metal detecting is pretty well dead now. The best parks and areas that were good for MD are cleaned out over the years. It used to be free of permits back in the 70's but then the city added a $3 permit per year to go into city parks ,etc.. Since then permits have gone up every year. Now they want $30 per year to go into city areas that are pretty well cleaned out of artifacts. They also made a lot of the used to be good areas restricted for MD. I can understand golf courses but a lot of the other areas like Sports Cores that are now restricted make no sense. Sad thing is there are no good beaches in this area either. Bummer!

It's a 'park' that a development company built on top of an old parking lot blacktop a few years ago. They own the entire flat area surrounding it but have thus far really dragged their feet in building anything that the city needs. They promised a long time ago as part of the land deal that they would provide the neighborhood with a park as part of their development, and after years of sitting around doing absolutely nothing with the space, they finally slapped this weird gated park together. The sand pit is just a giant box about 2 feet deep filled with sand, has a volleyball court on one end and a seating area on the other; the logs replicate how our beaches look in Vancouver, we have large logs all over the beaches for seating. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

@ScoopyJoe Год назад
Yeah I think perhaps the maintenance guy misrepresented what I was doing when he'd initially spoken to her before he approached me, once it was clear that it was quite absurd to suggest no one should dig in the sand pit she backed off pretty quickly. This park has a bit of a contentious history with nearby residents, as it is technically privately owned by a development company. However the park exists as part of a development promise the company made to the city for their free use of the land, so I think it sets a disturbing precedent that private development companies can use city space to build seemingly 'public' parks and arbitrarily control their access like a private business would on a whim. Thanks for watching!

City/Park Property is PUBLIC PROPERTY, paid for by PUBLIC taxes....Therefore owned by the PUBLIC....😮🤯
@ScoopyJoe
@ScoopyJoe 14 дней назад
Normally yes, unfortunately this park is in a bit of a grey zone. It's owned by a property development company and was put in place as part of a deal they had with the city. So while the city is responsible for it existing, it technically belongs to the developer. I've complained about this park's policies directly to the city before (they have a mechanized gate that locks the entire park down at 10pm for instance), but the city told me they can't do anything because it's not technically one of their parks.

I think to be safe for when/if there is a next time, I would look up any city ordinances covering digging. Just because the guy cleans or rakes the sand in itself, makes him no authority or an enforcement personnel. Who's to know if he calls yet again as to who might be on the other end of his call - his friend or family member??? Where I live, we cannot dig in State or Federal parks. However, all city parks are fair game. Enjoy the hunt and see you on the next one 💯🤞💥👍😎🌞☕☕☕
@ScoopyJoe
@ScoopyJoe Год назад
I've checked with the city, there are no ordinances against metal detecting anywhere! You only cannot 'damage' the grass turf in parks, everything else is fair game. This park is owned by a major development company so it's 'private' even though it's a publicly accessible city park, a really bad precedent being set by the big development corporations to control more public city land I think.
