Hi brother the root to this is faith and trusting the lord I myself married with six children I experienced a case of depression but with the depression I still knew it was the devil trying to attach me I was overwhelmed sad confused and didn’t Understand it wasn’t my husband or kids who brought me out it was the lord I myself felt everything was a burden but something then allow me to slip if that makes since . It’s been about five years and depression is lifted off me . Depression is so common in the black community but ironically, feeling like asking for help being a burden is also common. It’s sad and i pray that Ms Leah gets through it
She did have to say that because mental illness is stigmatized in the black community (which makes no sense if you think about the history of black people in America) it's important that she mentioned that because many POC don't feel as though we should or can ask for help, especially black women - because of stereotypes that surround us. Think about when shootings happen (mostly white men) the media quickly looks to their mental health and when POC are victims or in the rare case that shootings happen that POC may commit - we're labeled as thugs and terrorists - our mental health is not a concern. & you’re essentially doing the same thing by trying to silence that recognition.
Depression in the black community, men and women, is a common issue, that most of us sweep under the rug. I remember my aunt telling me, "depression isn't real. People went through a lot back in the day and no one was depressed." I just shook my head. As a parent, I speak to my sons about their feelings constantly. I myself, know how it feels to suffer from depression. It is a constant battle. Not just a one treatment and you're cured thing.

I really, really applaud him for taking an active role is helping his wife heal from her depression and suicidal thoughts. This is a sign of a man that wants to be a real husband, and who really has the perspective of: this is a partnership. Oh my goodness this touched my heart. Kia Roane you are sooooo,..... right. With society making women feel like a label comes along with any change in behavior we as women don’t share our tuff or dark moments. We dismiss them or act like we are just tired when we as human beings need help. Yes, we are women but our vaginas seem to create this default to being just EMOTIONAL, DRAMACTIC OR ANGRY beings. It’s sad because then we suffer in silence and that only leads to our families getting the short end of the stick.

Amen! And this goes for men too! So many people in general are suffering from depression, and not many people know the signs...and if they do, they ignore it or dismiss the person. Intentional and nonintentional. Just like you said...some woman get pinned with an "angry" label, and men get the same label. In my opinion, i think men who have depression have it harder, because it can be looked at as "weakness" and in this society, ESPECIALLY in the black/hispanic community, it his a no-no. Not to make it a race thing, but there are a lot of things a person of color deal with that are magnified and nonexistant in other races that would break the strongest person, yet we are "taught" to keep pushing, and are told "ur grandma did it, and great grandfather did it, so did so-and-so, so there's no excuse". And when they are physically and mentally unable to do so, they're labled as "weak" and "overly-emotional". Mental health is real and needs to be talked about more! I've been that wife... I was put on medication that was making it more complicated to deal with the already crippling depression I was experiencing. I remember calling my husband every morning for a couple weeks crying in the parking lot at my work bc my anxiety was so bad I felt like I couldn't go in. Finally one morning, I told him I couldn't do it anymore, I was scared of my own thoughts and was afraid of what I would do if I was left alone. A lot of people would like to believe that suicide is this irrational, selfish choice but really, I didn't feel in control of myself. My husband insisted I call my doctor, and my doctor got on the phone immediately and sent me to the ER. I was enrolled in a PHP (partial hospitalization program) which allowed me to be at the hospital during the day and with my family at night which was the absolute best thing I ever did. Over the course of those 6 weeks, my medication was completely changed and I've done well... however depression for me often rears its ugly head as a little voice telling me to give up, and often times its hard to ignore. It is SOOOO important for us to have people like you and my husband who can listen and as you said pay attention and recognize when something isn't quite right. Often times, my husband recognizes the change in my mood and/or behavior even before I do and it takes him going "what's wrong" for me to recognize, "oh yeah, there is something wrong" so i can reach into the bag of tools I've been taught to use so I can cope with whatever it is that is stirring up those negative emotions. I hope you know how important someone like you is for your wife and how much we (as the sufferers) appreciate you guys. "Burden" is tough to get over... but just remember that it's part of the depression that makes us feel that way-that we aren't important enough to bother anyone and why would they care anyway?- and it's why so many suffer in silence until it's too late. You, sir, are a wonderful example of being a support person. Thank you for sharing this experience and for being there for your wife when she needed you most... prayers for your wife and family 🙏💕
Thank you for sharing. I’ve been that wife too. I went through inpatient hospitalization. My husband visited me, when he picked me up to take me home, all of his belongings were gone. He had moved out because he didn’t understand mental illness and said I wasn’t the woman he married. My world was crushed. I went through PHP next, but I couldn’t heal with the pain I was going through on top of everything else. Three years later and I still here, if you’re experiencing difficult times, I promise, it gets better. I still battle with depression and guilt and feeling like I’ll never be loved again since I haven’t had a relationship since him, but I know that God has a plan for me. Peace and Love.

As Amalah said in the last video, "Mom, you're a super hero." and the superheroes always end up defeating. I went through some serious periods of depression a few years ago, which helped me: - change life (country, job, environment, ...) - meditation - hypnosis - improve my living space: I start practicing sport again, I changed completely what i eat, i stay away from everything that pulled me down. - love for my family. Today I am much better, it can happen to me to have bad thoughts but they are brief and do not lead me anymore in a serious depression. Sorry for my mistakes i speak French. love from Guadeloupe.

When I had to switch from one antidepressant to a new one, it took me three months to stop feeling like I did not want to live. I had to stay up all night and sit on my hands and pray. I had a husband who understood and he kept an eye on me. The Depression was crushing and deadly. 3 months and 1 day later it finally kicked in and I could lay down and sleep. My husband passed away three months ago on our kitchen floor. My hands were on his chest and I told him I loved him and he could only mouth I love and he died. Now I have no one. There is no one to watch over me and there is no one to cry with and there's no one to bring me a cup of tea and worst of all, there's no one to give all my love to. God bless you and your family. I thank the Lord Almighty you were there for your wife. So many times there is no one there and that's when we lose people. Love, Carly

It takes a very strong person to speak on this serious condition a spouse is going through. It takes an even stronger person to say out loud I'm hurting and I need help. The fact that she was voicing to you the way she really feels and her inner most deep thoughts and concerns is a clear sign that Your Wife, best friend and mother of your children is not without hope. I was going through the same thing. Fitness helped me a TON. Fitness clears my head, it’s my therapy and I wish that other people knew how much of a blessing it’s been to me. When you’re feeling down it feels IMPOSSIBLE to get out of it. Praying for her, have faith!!! She is lucky to have a supportive husband. Not everyone has that
Some Random Mom yeah I definitely agree. I was in a bad place a few months ago and I realized that exercise helps. I’m trying now to lose some weight not only to rebuild my confidence in myself but to find somewhere to empty a lot of pent up emotion. Even though it doesn’t make the burden go away, it lightens it for sure.
Chantelle Brown yesss yesss the pent up emotion and lightening everything is exactly what it does for me as well. I now make working out just as important as it is for me to eat food to stay alive. Oh and coffee.....unfortunately I’m a coffee addict, but fortunately it helps my mood a lot.
This hits home so hard for me. I'm dealing with this very same thing. My wife has been battling depression for years and it has really gotten bad now. I'm just trying to do all I can to make sure she makes it. It's so hard, but I won't give up on her.

I've been dealing with depression since I was 16 and I'm 40 now. I've attempted suicide 5 times, been in the hospital and seen several therapists. I have 4 beautiful children and I know they're the only reason I'm still alive. I have a very supportive boyfriend and I know this isn't easy for him to deal with because I'm also an Epileptic. Everyday is a battle, like I'm fighting for my life and I know I would damage my children if I took my own life. Leah, I know what you're going through and how you feel. You have 2 beautiful angels to live for and they need their Momma, especially girls. Mr. Cross, I think you're a wonderful husband and father and just continue to be a support for her. I had my last suicide attempt March of last year and almost succeeded. Depression is no joke it takes away your inner self to the point you don't want to live but when I came out of I left my home state and went to Louisiana there I saw life and I realize that I have to fight to live, fight this depression, and make changes. I don't take medication cause to me they only make you worst instead I go on my walk I use to exercise and meditate as well as pray and today I'm proud of what I'm doing life gets frustrating but I hang on to my positive thoughts.

My brother didn't make it and I believe he thought no one would miss him, that he would be forgotten but I talk about him almost everyday. It'll be 2 years and it doesn't seem real still. I had a friend that unfortunately took her life. I realized after blaming myself for months after that the person have to want to live. If they don’t , there is nothing those who loved them can do. . . . My prayer is that she finds something to live for. Something bigger than her children and family. Sorry to hear about your friend. I've been on both sides of this situation. It's not that we don't want to live. People use a type of rational with that feeling of deep loss which has no rational at that time. When you walk into a dark room you may feel afraid because of the unknowns that darkness could have. But the type of darkness that a suicidal person experiences isn't afraid of any unknowns. At that point fear doesn't exist. Nor does like, hate or love. We feel the darkness that others can only see. It literally swallows us up and the pain is so deep that it seems as though it's found a depth that's longer than the length of our actual insides or bodies and it can't be touched or reached by any hand no matter how long. I always ask people, would you stop to talk to a crazy, erratic mad person on the streets to try and reason with them? The answer is always no. Then i ask why? And they all understand that the mind of the crazy or erratic person is unable to process regular logic at that moment. We understand the so called crazy ones simply because they have showed society that they are not behaving according to what society accepts as normal behaviour anymore. The problem is that in the mind of a depressed person we are battling between being socially acceptable in our behaviour while our minds are driving us crazy in an emotionally painful way that no one could see or hear but us. The false thoughts become real. Not too sure if I'm doing a good job at describing it. But i will say this much, creating helped me a great deal. The songs just started coming out of me and each time they did i felt better. Leah is a great wife with a great husband. They both need our love and support. Having some type of creative outlet may help. Who knows

One has gotta want to live and that comes from finding something to live for, something bigger than you, bigger than family, bigger than daily bread, bigger than our looks and people acceptance, bigger than the routines of mere existence. It’s called PURPOSE and it’s God that gives that. He made us for a reason bigger than ourselves and our needs/wants and when we find what it is, then LIFE HAS A MEANING. You can’t dare die because you’re fulfilling the intent of the Manufacturer (God). And all we need do is believe in Him as our Saviour, ASK that He shows us what His purpose for us is, and then get in our Bibles and read!!!! There’s Life in there! All our prayers are with Leah & your family. I was just where Leah was 2 years ago. I was committed for 18 months in a psychiatric center. I was heavily medicated for 4 weeks but after that it was the best treatment for me. If my husband didn't see the red flags, I wouldn't be here today. It will take time but it will get better.
I love this bc I'm very religious, but I'm also a neuroscientist, and God won't help with this. Depression is very real, and they did the most intelligent thing: go get help by trained professionals
@@lizagates6252 God has freed many from depression on His own - many testimonies :) In my research, I found its Leviathan eg Book of Job ie pride. Also lack of love from the (earthly) father, even mother at times. So yes, mummy and daddy issues. Jesus is our savior, "sozo" in Greek which means to be made whole, in spirit, soul, and body. 1 Thess 5:23 He wishes that we come to him first but understands that we may rely on man and pharmakia first. Depression and Anxiety Attacks can be so much for a person to deal with and being that you are so young I know it can be very stressful on you. But, stay strong and hopeful that overtime you will get much better. Do you have a support group that you attend weekly or monthly? It's good to surround yourself with supportive people who have your best of interest in helping you stay focused on your road to recovery. Pick people who are positive and uplifting spirit who are will to be helpful to you. Keep your spirit up and try to stay hopeful that things will get better in due time. As a therapist, you did the right thing! Its hard so hard but you did the right thing! This is going to be ongoing help, but do not beat yourself up! Take care of yourself and your girls. To your wife, she is a warrior. Depression is difficult, but she is going to be okay! She just needs to find the right meds and counseling. Prayer is great for support and will lift her spirits. You did the right thing and she was brave enough to tell truly how she was feeling.

If I was there, I would babysit free of charge, and clean if you needed it so you would have enough time to visit Leah and help her, I don't know what else I could do except pray but I know God is already with you and has already planned a way of escape from this situation and any future ones! I woke up this morning praying for Leah and this beautiful family. And this scripture, 1 Corinthians 2:5 "So that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power". I declare life into Leah right now in the name of Jesus. Psalms 118:17 Leah, will not die, but live and proclaim what the LORD has done. God's grace, mercy and HIS faithfulness will continue to manifest in La Guardia Cross family. Stay faithful, and closer to Christ than ever. I declare victory, joy and peace into the lives of people who feel hopeless and helpless.
We need more people to be transparent about their experiences on mental health issues. Everyone needs to step up and talk to those family, friends, and spouses who need help and support.

Ive battled depression as a single mother for over 11 years. I don't have a hero husband or support system. I couldn't do inpatient cause who would watch my daughter? Please let her know that she is stronger than she thinks!!! She can do this. You love her, you are her husband. You are by her side now its time for her so do the work. Exercise has been my saving grace . She could try that. And Cognitive behavioral therapy. She has to change that wallpaper in her mind. From im unworthy to im worthy.
Tnc874 I'm so glad you are sharing things with them that help you! I'm also praying for more support for you. Being a single mom is sooo hard. One thing that helped me was having a pen pal. I know that sounds weird, but knowing I could sit down and write an actual letter to a real person that was going to read it and write me back was so encouraging. It made me feel less alone. Even though they were across the world lol😊

I pray that the right kind of medication is prescribed for Leah to help her maneuver through life while dealing with depression...but more importantly my prayer is that God would do a supernatural healing in her life because she needs it. Depression and feeling like there's no way out is all too real and it needs to be taken seriously and I am so glad that you did. Marriage and raising kids is work and my prayer for you is that God continues to strengthen you as a husband and father because your position is a tough one to be in. oh, did this story help me. I came out of inpatient a couple weeks ago for self harm. they upped my dose of Seroquel. yesterday was my first day of IOP, (outpatient) and it was awesome :') I love you guys 😊

This one touched me in such a personal way as I have dealt with depression for about 20 years and even attempted suicide last week. This disease is the worst thing to ever happen to me, and I can only imagine was Leah and yourself are going through. I pray that your family makes it through this awful time and that your wife gets all the help that she needs. ❤
