Almost missed flight to Montreal

70 mins prior to my Baku to Montreal flight, Qatar Airways tells me I can't board the plane because I didn’t have a Canadian Visa. so reluctantly I headed back to my Baku hotel hoping to take the following day's flight, BUT WAIT! A miracle occurred and suddenly I was on my back to the airport hoping like hell the checkin crew would reverse their decision. Join me by pressing PLAY, on another epic transcontinental adventure.
Despite all my travels following the Formula 1 schedule and my understanding of F1 logistics I’m still occasionally challenged by the procedures and processes of international travel. Although I did managed to snag myself a seat on the amazing Qatar Airways Q suite en route to the 2022 Montreal GP which was absolutely delightful. Apparently though I wasn't the only one who almost missed my flight to Montreal, I also saw that Charles Leclerc actually missed his flight to the long awaited Canadian GP.

Hey Kym! The hôtel Le Germain facade was repainted a few years ago during the Montreal Mural festival. Lucky for you, the festival this year is going on right now during Grand Prix weekend! The festival allows for graffiti artists to paint whole buildings in unique graffiti art, and is around the St-Laurent metro area, pretty close to the hôtel. It could make for some interesting shots!

As a Canadian, I'm surprised Visas are required between us and Australia. Pretty amazing they were able to process your Visa in about an hour! ...and a belated Welcome to Montreal!

Welcome to Montreal ! I’m a big F1 fan since I was 12…. Now 53. French Canadian. Saw the years of Senna on the circuit, Prost, Mansell, Hill…. Etc….Hopefully our hospitality and welcome will enhance your work experience and visit. Yes Le Germain Hôtel has been totally overhauled and redone. Boutique Hôtel. Merci beaucoup et bienvenue à Montréal, Québec. This is where as you know our Canadian Senna…. Gilles Villeneuve, our F1 hero is still quite alive in our F1 hearts… Cheers. Welcome to Canada Kym! Would love to be at the race. But alas, I am 5 hrs by plane to the west and busy farming. Been a fan of F1 for 30 years, only 1 race live (Hungary 2015). Enjoy your videos, and photography! Keep up the good work. PS. Try the poutine!

The airport bus you rode on are usually called Mobile Lounges. Montreal had a bunch of them at the former international airport, Mirabel. But they saved a few for Dorval (Trudeau) airport when Mirabel closed to passengers. These were used at a few different airports around the world... I've ridden them in Montreal, Washington Dulles, Jeddah and Paris CDG. But I think that Montreal and Washington are the only remaining airports that use them.

Great video Kym 👍. Was in Baku many years ago (1999?) on business and can’t believe how everything has developed there both from watching the F1 GPs in the last two or three years and seeing your videos. The people are great. What struck me about your flights was how much the airlines have raised their game in the last few years. The product is getting better all the time- business class is now so much better than just an armchair and legroom.

Hello Kym, hope a gorgeous Sunday made up for the wet days. I was so shocked to see you walk past me and my family on Saturday ... it took me a second to call out your name but it was raining a lot and you and your camera were in some serious rain gear heading for shelter. (I was in general admission inside the track near the final chicane). Your videos always bring a smile (because you are always smiling?) and I appreciate your candor. Keep it up, you are inspiring many photographers out here!

Really enjoying your travel clips but as a Canuck I am confused about your need for a Visa to go to Canada. I looked into this and Aussies don't need a Visa for up to 6 months of business or pleasure travel. Keep up the awesome work man: it is the only way I'll ever see business or first class on a flight!!

It’s not a visa, it’s a Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

They’re slowly being phased out. Everyone not flying United has an underground walkway to the main terminal. Subway to downtown coming before year’s end, too!

It’s wonderful how things work out at times. You paid almost double what your taxi fare would have been out of the goodness of your heart and in turn, your visa came through and you were able to catch your flight. I don’t believe in coincidences

Welcome to Canada. Amazingly, I've never been to the airport in Montreal and I live in Toronto. When I go to Montreal I either drive or take the train. I could suggest some great restaurants but I'm sure some Montreal people will help you out. The track in Montreal is basically right in the middle of the city. What a great location! I 've been to maybe 10 races in Montreal back in the day in the late 80s and 90s and 1 in 2001. Aussies need VISAs for Canada? That's silly. I don't understand that. Anyways, enjoy!! The weather will be nice for the weekend. 20-23c.

Greetings from a fan of F1 and of your videos here on the westcoast of Canada. As some of the comments below, if you can, look for a meal at Au Pied du Cochon. I had a wonderful meal there over 10 years ago, ordered the fois gras sundae and duck in a can. Yes, they cook a duck and can it, then they open the can at tableside and out comes the hot fowl on your plate. Love your stories and how pleasant you sound even though you must have been stressed with getting on the flight and fighting with the taxi scammer in the previous video.

Welcome to Montreal! It’s supposed to rain this Friday but nice for the weekend. Le Germain is a nice hotel. Hope you have a nice time here despite all the construction! Qatar Airways used to give pyjama for business class passengers, at least they did before Covid. I guess not anymore!

Love these (and all your other) video's. I would like to know the prices for these luxury flights/different less luxury options, but you not mentioning them I suspect your not willing/possible to include that info. If willing/possible, I hope you some times wil/can include it. The luxury you receive make me think the extra price is more often worth it than not, especially for the long flights but also the extras like lounges etc.

They have those same :Passenger Transfer Vehicle or Passenger Transport Vehicle (PTV) (mobile lounge) at Dulles Airport outside Washington DC. Damn thing is ugly.

Kym, the transporter from the plane to the airport in Montreal, is very similar to the moving lounges at the Washington Dulles Airport. Here is a link with some basic info on them: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_lounge

Oh my goodness! Some of Charles bad luck might have rubbed off on you. He actually missed his flight. As an American, l don’t know much about commonwealth countries but l thought anyone can travel from one to another without a visa. Can someone explain this to me? Whoa that woman was so nice to escort you! I’ve had a few moments of running through airports and barely making my flights, but l can’t imagine traveling with filming equipment. I love food review videos! You always give us what we want to see. Of course food is one of the best parts of traveling.

In broad terms: Of all the airport reality videos I've seen I wish I wish people would understand preparation for their flight starts about 2 hours before the plane takes off. There is weather to consider, luggage check in, the weight and balance of the aircraft that needs calculating, catering and so much more. When a flight has closed it isn't that easy to get one last person on it.
