Thanks for the gentle insightful comment on PTSD. As a retired MH clinician it's great to see open discussion. I love living in lutruwita and takayna is a beautiful and precious place. The area you are camped on was intentionally flooded hence all the dead trees. I hoped people watching would be made aware of that during the series. The actual forest is stunning.

Thanks for another insightful recap! Chris has certainly done a lot to raise awareness on PTSD.

Enjoying the recaps Mike. Good to get your perspective on each of the other contestants. All the stuff we don’t see in a 30min episode.

Hi Mike, We're loving the behind-the-scenes insights and now have family and friends using SBS on demand to start watching the series and your RU-vid videos. We're enjoying watching the recaps as much as Alone Australia. Thanks, Anne & Pete

I am a hiker and use trekking polls when walking. In hindsight walking in slippery mud, one should use a walking stick makes it easier, quicker and safer. A few US alone contestants did the same walking with an axe over shoulder where your arms cant assist in balance, and if you do fall you are too busy worrying about your axe so your are not avoiding obstacles on the fall.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
A pole for balance can certainly be handy. We usually had one hand full holding a tripod so I often used it for balance.

Great videos Mike! If you’re allowed to talk about it, it would be really interesting to learn more about the filming requirements imposed on you by the producer. Were you required to record a certain amount of footage per day? Were you asked to film (or not film) particular actions? Could you be kicked off the show if you didn’t meet their requirements? Would be awesome to hear more in a future vid!

Thanks for the recap, I know the Bunnings gloves you're talking about - I use the cheap yellow ones around the yard but I have a pair of PETZL gloves (I think they call them belay gloves for rope work) when I need something more robust and reliable. Cost me like $90 though.

Fantastic Mike. Just watched ep 9 and fascinated by the escapades of the last 3. I wonder if Michael will be next to go. Would you have considered an outrigger on your brilliant kayak? I had to breathe a sigh of relief when you caught that brown trout and said “I better get this away from the water’s edge” as I find myself telling the screen to each contestant “quick, move away from the fricken water with that newly caught and slippery fish”.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
I can’t answer the outrigger question yet sorry. Yeah. It was always so tricky to get them in. The bank was steep and slippery and it was so snaggy.

Enjoying these recaps. Interesting hearing about you taking gloves out with you. I've only just started doing this out bush and it does make a difference. What's your thoughts on cooking up eels? Would you think roasting on hot coals would make it more bareable to eat then boiled with water? Looking forward to seeing what you can catch out there.

I’ll cover this in future recaps.

Char-grilled is preferable..pretend you’re at a Japanese restaurant eating a rice bowl topped with grilled eel fillets that have been generously brushed with unagi sauce. If only..
@Lukeslittletribe
@Lukeslittletribe Год назад
@@missy4663 haha, I would much prefer char grilled on the coals, but in a survival situation you want to utilize as much as the fat and oils, so making a broth a drinking it all down, despite the gross taste, seems more efficient

Mike, at what point does eating become # 1 priority? When does your 'camel hump' you created beforehand cease to be effective? And how the heck do you satisfy the craving to eat, to masticate?
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
I think eating in that environment is the No.1 priority as soon as I’ve got a half decent shelter up. As far as cravings, I try to just push it from my mind. (Not often successful though😂)

Watching from outside AUstralia... can someone from down under please tell me how an obviously 100% white guy is aboriginal? Yeah, maybe a great great grandpa in 1832, but come on. He's whiter than my father, who's French.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
The way you phrased that would hurt a lot of people over here. It’s problematic and hurtful to classify how ‘Aboriginal’ someone is purely by their appearance. I’m better off not trying to explain it because I do would probably get it wrong. It’s more appropriate for an Aboriginal person to do it. They tend get a lot of hate when they do though which is why they are reticent to engage in hurtful conversations.
@naponroy
@naponroy Год назад
@@OutbackMike Well, it's kinda ridiculous. They hate they get is very likely from actual aboriginals. Australians used to be quite good at cutting down tall poppies and the like. An obvious white guy running around talking non-stop about being aboriginal probably earns the ire. My paternal grandmother's family came from Roman occupied Gaullic Burdigala (modern-day Bordeaux) and they emigrated in the 17th century, but if I went around claiming to be descendant of Julius Caesar or something, I'd expect a bit of push back.
@seanalexander9531
@seanalexander9531 Год назад
@@naponroy it's only ridiculous because you don't understand how it works, and you've formed an opinion with very little knowledge. Like Mike, I won't try to explain it but if you truly want to understand, you'd do some reading or reach out to some Australian Indigenous organisations and ask the question, hopefully more respectfully.
@naponroy
@naponroy Год назад
@@seanalexander9531 Nah, I get it. We have the same thing. Someone's great-great grandma was a half-blood indian, but somehow it's their whole identity today. Or those people who claim to be descendent from "the Kings of Scotland" or the like, despite their German Grandma and of 8 great, 16 great-great, 32 great-great grandparents they are more repreentative of their extended neighburhood than anything else. I gues the point is, you can identify as whatever you like, it doesn't mean everyone else is required to applaud your, uh, bravery.
@seanalexander9531
@seanalexander9531 Год назад
@@naponroy nah, you don't get it. There's a difference between me having a Scottish ancestor that I know little about and am not affected by what happened to them, and having my ancestors' country invaded, the people displaced, murdered, raped, removed from their families as children, and their descendants subjected to marginalisation and prejudice since then. It's called intergenerational trauma - it's very real and has had awful consequences in Australia. Did you listen to the contestant who had a grandparent who was part of the Stolen Generation? And what Mike talked about in recap episode 4? Let's recap - you asked a question that could have been genuine, Mike told you that your words would be very hurtful to Indigenous people in Australia, and without any more information you jumped to a bunch of conclusions and just dismissed generations of trauma. You're not interested in learning - you're just whining about something you know little about.
