So happy you have eaten. I was feeling very stressed for you. That was no doubt a pivotal point in your journey. With a constant food source, incredible skill set and strength of mind, I hope you’ve got this now. Although Gina is also an amazing person and in a similar position to you.

In our household you’re referred to as ‘MacGyver’ for obvious reasons. Love the way you’ve gone about it on the show- and cheers for these episode breakdowns, they are very insightful!

That was really interesting what you said about coping strategies. We didn't realise just how important the mental side of things was until we saw the show.

Hey Mike, i liked your smoker setup.. but they cut through you making it. Can you talk more about how you made it?
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
I hung the eel fillets and the frame (skeleton) vertically into the smoker from the top (with wire through the skin). Then kept the fire going just enough so smoke was visible coming out the top of of the bark cylinder. After 6-8 hours the fillets were golden and tasted great with a beautiful smokey flavour.

Hey Mike! Thanks for sharing more of your story and time on Alone. I was curious about your transition to fishing at night - does this mean fishing is categorised separately to hunting, given hunting wasn't permitted at night per Aus alone's regulations? Probably just semantics, but I presumed "hunting" to be an umbrella term for any capturing of animals. If not, it looks like you're the first person in three weeks to attempt night-time fishing, and it clearly is a good change of strategy given (I believe) eels are active at night. Then again, aware we only get a tiny snap shot and soundbite of all the contestants' activities, so this is all conjecture!
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
Yes. Land hunting is regulated by different agencies compared to anything in the water, which is managed by fisheries.

There are places in Tasmania it can take an hour to move 50 metres. Horizontal scrub is no joke. 🤣 Gotta heckle ya Mikey, it would be un-Australian not to.

Hi Mike, loving the series. I just can't work out how all your equipment for filming stays charged up. Do you have a huge supply of batteries?
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
We had a larger battery that we could recharge the small camera batteries from. This was occasionally swapped out with fresh batteries like when they did med checks.
@trishi1322
@trishi1322 Год назад
@@OutbackMike thank you, I wonder every episode - I had visions of production team sneaking in during the night to swap out batteries :) Hope you were able to safely store the smoked Eel. I grew up in the bush in Tassie and when we camped, we would have possums running all over us at night trying to raid our food supplies!!

It’s devastating to lose a fish at the last moment even recreationally, can’t imagine when you are 20 days starving, so glad you got some, that must’ve been some sort of elation. Did you think about just pinning them through the head to the ground with a knife or sharp stick when you didn’t have a net, that’s what I was thinking when watching.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
Yes but I was standing on a narrow ledge and wanted to get it across somewhere flatter to do what you’re talking about. Yeah it’s more stressful losing a fish in that situation for sure!

Hi Mike. An eagle eyed friend saw an anomaly in Episode 6 3:12 in. Is that the huon pine dredger on left of screen or a houseboat? Probs stock footage but was funny for us who live here.

I've been wondering it there's actually not much wildlife in Tasmania, or at least in your area. It seems there aren't any rodents or shellfish, there don't seem to be a lot birds or land creatures around compared to other seasons of Alone in different locations.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
Yeah. There a certainly a lot of places with more animals…..and fish!

Do you have an agreement with SBS for these episodes on your channel? I don't think they will help your channel. Just FYI.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
Thanks. It’s possible. It’s all a learning game. I ask SBS to look over everything to make sure I don’t accidentally give away spoilers unintentionally in advance. Like the general public I see the Eps for the first time as they come out on TV.

I have been pondering the fishing events and knew, as you said, that everyone would have been flat out trying to catch some. The editing gives the impression of you all not fishing so much until a certain time. Now about skill sets. I still think there is a lot of skill needed to catch fish rather than just the fish suddenly being on the bite. Did you take into account variables such as where in the water column were the fish feeding? Would a float have allowed the bait to do two things: 1. Sought fish feeding higher up in the water column and 2. Kept a caught fish from diving down into the snags? A large enough float (dry disk of wood) would have prevented them diving. Trout are not too fussy about what's floating around. I wonder if drop lines of a short length may have achieved the same result.
@OutbackMike
@OutbackMike Год назад
Yes. I tried all those things.

If I knew the future and that it would not bring in food then I wouldn’t have build it. If I hadn’t built it I would always wonder if it would have worked.
