At 3:45am, we are the only crew leaving onto Lake Michigan out of Ludington. Well, we see lights on the S.S. Badger but that's it. Cruising at night is special, especially when the weather is like glass. We hope you enjoy this fantastic day on Lake Michigan to Saugatuck.
Thanks for watching!
Cheers from the Loop,
Jennifer and Elliot

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
Thank you for following us along our journey!

We sail the great lakes all season, and you are right to check and be obsessive about weather! It can turn in half an hour!!

As a lifelong resident of Ann Arbor mich I honestly say that for cruising there is nothing better than the Great Lakes. Nothing in the water to eat you. Easy on the boat. No crazy tides or currents. All you have to do is watch the weather. About 30 yrs ago I got caught on Lake Erie in a storm on my 19 foot fishing boat. Made my hair turn white. Nowadays we have better equipment. Much safer.

Watching the weather is very smart . If more people did that there would be less problems on the lakes !

Smart thing watching the weather often. I didn't one day and ended up in 12' waves on the beam. Was a long trip for about 6 miles trying to keep the waves on our bow. A narrow channel with rocks just under the surface on one side and just over on the other. We wanted to go back, but the channel was too narrow in those waves. You guys were in that channel in Georgian bay and know that can get your adrenaline working overtime. Nope, smart boaters is what you are. If new boaters watch your videos and take your habits and precautions, they will be safe and enjoy their boating days. Look what you've done with a used single engine boat.6 months of super nice boating so far.

I love the sunrise but 4:something in the morning is way too early. Checking the weather regularly is a good thing, it can save your life.

I love the commentary about the weather and checking the parameters! I love the parameters themselves. I am showing wife (Admiral) Debbie your vids and that your worst trip was the Pamlico Sound. Every season when a trip beckons and the weather is slightly not perfect, I get her reminder of the trip we took from Ocracoke to the Oriental 10 years ago now - our worst trip. Lake Michigan looks very intimidating on the map, but I truly appreciate how you break down each leg and where you are in the weather season. Looking forward to your transiting Chicago vid when that comes sometime ahead. Hope Starlink has been everything you wanted! Love the sound of the Lehman in the background. Such awesome motor. I love the comment about "we do this for pleasure, we are pleasure boaters" (Sorry for writing a novel, first coffee!) Happy travels!

haha thanks Ben! Sounds like we have had similar bad days, but as long as we learn from those bad days then we can have many more good ones!

Thank you so much for putting these vidios out. I know they are a lot of work ..I've tried and well let's say not good . I stubbled on to your u tube channel one day and then went backg to the beginning andhave watched everyone. My Sweetheart will absolutely not do the loop so i will resect her thoughts and wishes. I also follow Stay Cool. I find everyone unintentionally covers different things on and about the loop even if you are in the same anchorages at the same time the loop is still different for each boat/ crew. But woven together by watching different channels it a absolute Beautiful tapestry. Thank you so very much for sharing the awesome trip it truly helps me relax at the end of the day.. And at lunch.

Thanks Scott!! That's one of the best parts of RU-vid, we all get to experience things we may not be able to for whatever reason. Cheers

I am glad that you are obsessed with checking the weather! Glad you have been having great cruising weather. Be even more glad once you are off of that lake, and back in protected waterways. Any chance you will be able to film the storms over the next 5 days? (Film it from the flybridge of your boat, while you are safe at your friend's Bruce & Cindy dock.)

Saugatuck is a great destination. Highly recommended: take "chain ferry" across the river to Mount Baldhead. Take stairs up for a fantastic view of Saugatuck/Kalamazoo Lake and then down to Oval beach (rated one of the top 25 beaches in the world by Conde Nast). Fun and popular day anchorage right inside the channel from Lake Michigan where people with smaller craft beach their boats and party. Saugatuck Douglas also has a ridiculously cheap "interurban" shuttle bus that was extremely useful when we were there. The Ravines is a fantastic golf course for anyone who wanted to add a round to our stay. (Interurban shuttle took us out there) Tower Marina in Douglas was good to us. Sergeant Marina was the only on-water gas we found locally and very pricey. So fuel elsewhere if you have a choice.

Great tips all-around! The chain ferry unfortunately was closed for the season when we arrived!

The West Michigan lake towns are great to visit. Grand Haven is our favorite but we actually just got back from Saugatuk ourselves. Hope you all had a good time even with the bad weather. It was our first time and we really liked it. It can get pricey though. We were going to rent one of those "donut boats" that you see in the video at 16:22 but the minimum rental was $269 for two hours.

Enjoyed another wonderful video! I'm a local boater and we spend most of our time on Green Bay. Looking to venture farther as time goes on. What programs, apps or websites do you use for weather and maybe more specifically wind? I have found most of the apps I have used stink. Have not found a reliable source for wind speed and direction.
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo Год назад
On Lake Michigan we use a combination of the NOAA, Windy.app (the blue icon windy), and Predict Wind. Windy has done great for us for the now to 3 day forecast. Predict wind is good for the extended forecast!

Far too many people when they think of Michigan think Detroit....just like a lot of people think New York think New York City. Being from Ohio we are not allowed to like Michigan because it is always football season and talk about a rivalry lol. Go Bucks!
