I got to sit in with Larry Coryell once at a seminar in Chicago. He was so much fun to play with, very helpful, very complementary, no ego-tripping or putdowns of my playing. I thought his face might split from smiling when I told him I liked comping better than soloing! That seemed to get him even more fired up. He also stayed much longer than he was supposed to; he had a gig at the Jazz Showcase that night, but since he stayed to answer all questions, he said he "didn't need a nap after all!".

Larry Coryell, of all the fusion guitarists, could really play in the prefusion style... he was so good at emulating this that it stands out... he didn't use his fusion shredding way... but he didn't promote himself in a planned way, so he was very difficult to follow or undestand

3'40 he goes Barney Kessell Mode, very apropiate, since Barney was kind of a precursor of Coryell's contrasting stylistic aproach

Thank you Mr Leduc ! Haven't yet heard of Larry Coyrell. Pleasant surprise. Love the single note part at the entry of the piece. Very 'sneaky' , makes me think of the spy-movies... Great sound.

Around measure 82-85, it sounds like he's channeling Wes's version of Yesterdays. These are wonderful resources, thank you so much, I can't wait to get home and play. I'm so raw in transcribing but I just put up a vid on my page of Emily Remler doing Triste, so I'm going to try and write that out. Do you learn first or just write out? Just curious what your process is for doing this. Also I hope you do get to Emily at some point.

hello guys, can you please give me any tips on learning such long pieces? is there a sense in trying to learn it note by note?
3 года назад
Usually I'm using these type of tunes more as studying purpose. I'm learning and analyzing sections one by one and then try to incorporate the ideas I like in my own improvisation. At that speed it's also fun to play along the tune. It's up to you, there are as much ways to use it than there are individuals. I would personally not try to learn it by heart note for note but I'm sure it would be a nice exercise too.

@ thank you for your answer! I agree, that's a hundred percent correct approach you're talking about, in the end - learning another man's improvisation sounds kind of wrong in its very essence :D thank you again for these videos!
