The Alpenfohn Black Ridge is supposed to be the best low profile CPU cooler available right now in 2022. But other than CPU cooling performance, the Black Ridge price and availability are two things we need to talk about. Then there's also performance vs Noctua L9 and Thermalright AXP-90 that might give the Black Ridge an edge since some fan mods with 120mm and 92mm fans can be done.

I don't know about other people but the thought of having to browse and filter hundreds of part options,check for clearances, make endless spreadsheets and to be able to build the best smallest 3d workstation gets me pumped up! But also a bit sad since I just updated my full tower ATX rig to a 5900x :))

Noiseless Flipped Noctua Fan works with a small spacer between fan and heatsink - this reduces the noisy turbulence between the fan and the fins. This shaved off some dbAs and worked best for me. I used a thin 3D-printed ring, but you probably could replace that with the thinnest ring of a Noctua NA-FD1 fan duct kit. I would love to see the temp/dbA results of that in the comparison.

since this is basically an is-47k, i can say you likely had the fan rubbing up against the heatsink a bit when you flipped the fan. adding a tiny spacer in between the heatsink and fan should help, happened to me when i flipped my fan. and the performance in that config is great.
@lordhighbinary2006
@lordhighbinary2006 2 года назад
A side note: Using the Noctua 92mm in a pull configuration does raise the noise, but ends up quieter then the stock fan by a lot, while giving you better thermals. You do give up some noise, but depending on your use case, it might be more worth it. Unless you can go with a slim 120mm underneath in a pull configuration, but as many have mentioned you'll need VLP memory for that, which is hard to find. Also you are limited to slower speeds and lower timings for VLP ram as well (so those looking for a gaming IGPU setup, this would not be optimal.)
@mikeymaiku

i found some on aliexpress,didnt take very long either for ADATA 3200mhz, 8gb sticks only as thats the only capacity you can get the vlp in, and they were... 45(CAD) a peice... would accept the much looser timings but thats due to the nature of the ram and SFF.
@lordhighbinary2006
@lordhighbinary2006 Год назад
@@mikeymaiku wow, those use to be way more expensive. The other issue if you haven’t noticed is the CAS latency. (Usually between 19 and 21, vs normal sticks that are 17 or less). I’ve not seen higher then 3200mhz either, but 3200-3600 is the sweet spot regrading performance IMHO

This is similar in principal to system i built. I have this mITX case that looks sort of the the NZXT H1, and i noticed that the Noctua C14S comes right up to the case fan fan bracket, so i bought some slim 120mm fans that exhaust out of the case and even though the C14S isnt really a great cooler for hot CPUs. My OC'd 5700G (2466 UCLK, MCLK, FCLK, 4933CL17-17-17-28) only gets to 78-80c even though it is pushing past 95w and the orientation of the heat sink is probably the least optimal way to mount it(had to have the heat pipes oriented with the bend facing up)

I seriously considered it for my mini itx build since i had a max clearence of 47mm. In the end a 5 degrees lower temperature was cool compared to the lh9a, but i was not willing to accept the compromises. I got a lh9a (chromax) for 20€ used, a black ridge was 45€ MORE if you consider the extra noctua fan. Than i could get 16 gb 4400mhz ram for 110€, going low profile could mean payng 180€ more or loose speed down to 3200mhz. Not considering there was some uncertainty about the compatibility with my selected mobo heatsinks. So yeah, 5 degrees less is cool, but not worth it in my opinion.
@lordhighbinary2006
@lordhighbinary2006 2 года назад
I've found that it's significantly lower if you use it in a pull configuration (and a 92mm Noctua). I will say: if you create a duct for the Noctua (lh9a/i) it will drop the temps even more, negating some of the bonuses of using the BR in a pull configuration with a Noctua fan. What I haven't tried though is creating a duct for the Black Ridge (won't do much for a push configuration though, only pull). Would be interesting to see. Again, the BR is more then just 5deg, as I find it not to spike the temps as much as the lh9a on higher wattage processors, but in pull mode only. And NOT with the stock fan. Which would drive up the price even more. Higher wattage processors is where I see the lh9a/i start to fail, especially on highly variable load. Note: the lh9a/i is still an great cpu cooler for the price, put a duct on it and it goes from good, to amazing. I just find the BR to be better (modded, not stock). Take that with a grain of salt though.
@druidobianco9734
@druidobianco9734 2 года назад
@@lordhighbinary2006 thanksfor the suggestion, a duct seems a pretty useful upgrade. Of course the max potential of the blackridge is shownwithmost powerful cpus, i consciously choose a 65w tdp cpu to pair with the l9a, for higher tdps the blackridge seems the better choice
@lordhighbinary2006
@lordhighbinary2006 2 года назад
@@druidobianco9734 There are a few 3d print designs floating around. Or you can make one with cardboard and/or foam. Noctua did make the NA-FD1, which is a fan duct kit (multiple thicknesses of foam gaskets) which works quite well, if you can't be bothered to make your own.

I did have to fudge the cooler (squash it a couple mm’s) to get it in the Skyreach Mini S4, but it wasn’t much effort on my part. Worth its $$$$ and scored it on sale here in Australia for about 40% off on sale 🥰👍🤯😇 the stars were all aligned for my purchase after a bit of a wait as they initially were sold out in many places and came on sale almost as soon as they went back in stock 👍😇🤯🫠🫠

I don't want to sound like I am nit picking but why wasn't it suggested to flip the fan if it was on top upside down to pull air through the heatsink right out of the case? Or a push-pull config for using both the fans on top and bottom? It would make sense that you wouldn't want 2 fans trying to push air into the fins that would cause turbulence.

The Ben Nevis lga1700 adapter that Alpenföhn sells looks suspiciously close in terms of set up to allow it to work with the black ridge, provided you can still use the back screws to mount it to the motherboard and set the Nevis’ top side spring screws beforehand. Make sure to check tdp amounts for whatever alder lake cpu you want to go with before trying though. The overclockable ones can be well above 120 watts, and might exceed the black ridge’s abilities.

@@arcticequine7084 12th gen is not a problem, you just have to tune it properly. If Black Ridge can handle 110W, then make that the power limit. 12th gen has diminishing returns at higher power draw anyway. Seeing how the 5800x3d runs hotter than the 5900x (unless you undervolt the 5800x3d), is it safe to assume the black ridge would work well with a 5900x at stock/undervolt? Currently using my 5900x with an ek 240 aio (idle temps are 48-54c/ gaming temps 64c-76c) in the t1 v2 and I mainly use it for gaming only. Haven’t touched video editing, rendering, streaming, benchmarks, etc but I at least plan to stream and do some light to medium video editing. I hate water coolers so I don’t have to worry about clutter and leakage but still want to have good temps/performance while air cooling. Awesome cooler, is it for everyone no, you need to do your build around it, correct mainboad, ram, case and riser. Possibly need to mod things. It's not for the first time builder. It for the fastest possible system in the smallest possible box like the geeek a30.

I don't understand why the Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1 (mentioned in another comment here) or it's other variant (which I own and love) the Noctua NH-L12S is not included in the round up. It is clearly the most similar cooler to the BR. I would be willing to wager that stock out of the box the BR with it's 6 heat pipes VS 4 in the Noctua L12 series, would at best manage a close tie offset by the superior stock fans that come with either of the Noctua variants. Only when you shell out even more to get a good Noctua or similar 120mm fan would the BR perform better and I'd bet not by nearly enough to win if performance/cost is a consideration (the Noctua L12 series is $55 US shipped and easily available on Amazon).

With this cooler I'd recommend using some sort of backplate because otherwise there is a real risk of bending your motherboard over time. For myself I purchased a Noctua mounting kit just to use their backplate. Some people have also reported slightly lower temps after using a Noctua backplate although I can't necessarily attest to that because I didn't bother measuring before and after.
@Phanbot01

I had to buy my Black ridge from Overclockers UK, totally worth the money if you do some research. It won't fit on all ITX motherboards and can only be paired with low profile memory. RGB sdram need not apply. I also swapped the stock fan with a Noctua fan, drops the fan noise significantly.
@MrLeonnius
@MrLeonnius 2 года назад
A backplate is mostly required to distribute the weight of a heavy cooler, right? Which is not the case here.
@HardwareCanucks

Its for more even mounting and to prevent motherboard damage as well.
