Finished moving the last pieces into the new apartment, so content will back to the usual pace real soon. Also, stream tomorrow over @ www.twitch.tv/optimum_tech, probably around 8pm PST.
G'day from Sydney. Hella cool stream. Do you have your secret sauce on OBS settings documented? Or is that a "I could tell you, but then I'd have to eliminate you" kinda question?
It's called being thorough. Can you imagine the REEEEEEE! that would ensue here if he didn't? Even the creators of the cooler has probably thought of this, when they included mounting brackets for 120mm fans.
@@Kenny_Ded no, actually, I can't see the REEEEE. This cooler should stand on its own merits with the included fan. Where would it end if we swapped various parts to make a new part look better. Your argument is a dead duck. Quack.
tonebonetones “Where would it end if we swapped various parts to make a new part look better” Hello, welcome to SFF enthusiast building, I see youre new here! It’s okay, I’ll help you out. Our first stop is r/sffpc on reddit where you’ll see pictures upon pictures of people swapping various parts trying to find the best cooling set up in the most minimal design. Rule #1, it never ends.
@@aa65064 obviously, you cant get to it otherwise? but then it also defeats the purpose unless you are going for only low profile and dont care about anything outside of one dimension. I also was implying that it couldnt possibly be the "LP Noctua killer" for that reason. In any capacity.
PSA: The only B450/X470 board it fits is Asus Strix, if you remove the M.2 heatsink. Luckily, Alpenfohn released alternative mounting kits that should allow it to be mounted on ASRock and Gigabyte boards. They can be found at british Overclockers and german Caseking for couple of pounds/euro. PSA 2: There are 2 versions of this cooler. The older V1 version is not being made anymore due to some manufacturing issues...you can recognize it by its matte black coating. The fixed V2 version is what's currently being sold and it has this "gunmetal/nickel black" shinier coating... It's also the best cooler you can fit in the chinese K39 v2 case (and a couple of similar Taobao cases), which allows you to make a killer gaming system in a 4-5-4.7 liter case with an RTX 2070 ITX GPU...
I'm using it on a b450 aorus itx board. So I guess I have the new mounting brackets? fun fact: i didn't and it broke one of the chokes off of my motherboard and i had to replace it
I'm coming from using a Noctua NH-L12S, 70mm inside my Loque Ghost S1 II. I bent the heat pipes to cram it into the Ghost and it still lightly touches the side panel. So I just installed the Alpenfohn Black Ridge in my Loque Ghost S1 II and it's simply amazing. I replaced the stock Alpenfohn Black Ridge 92mm fan with a slim Noctua 92mm (Noctua A-Series NF-A9x14) and installed slim Noctua 120mm (Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM) on the top of the CPU cooler (both fans blowing onto the motherboard) and I still have about an 8-millimeter gap between the top-mounted slim 120mm fan the side panel. It looks as if I might even be able to install a full-sized 120mm fan rather than the slim 120mm fan. My normal CPU temps with the Noctua NH-L12S ranged between 45 to 65 degrees with an aggressively very low fan curve (lowest fan speed until 45 degrees, 50% fan speed at 65 degrees). Using the exact same fan curve but with the Alpenfohn Black Ridge and the two Noctua fans, my temps now range from 35 to 52. Thank you so much for making this video! I couldn't be happier with this product. It's more compact, works better, and yes I agree with you, it's a damn good looking heatsink.
My experience with black ridge. -Crap compability, & actually cracked components on my board. (Aorus b450) - Worst mounting system I have ever seen, Jesus scrap the horrible am3 - It was literally as silver as my noctua cooler, false marketing renders 🤷 + Decently quiet. Would never recommend it in a milion years over literally anything else.
I would love to see some dB normalized comparisons of those low profile coolers. I think this is a better way of directly comparing the coolers/Fans. Thanks for the awesome sff videos still 😁
@@Waldreth And will it be enough to cool an Intel i9-9900K with provided cooler on ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac ? If so, and it perfectly fits the mobo inside the Louqe ghost S1, then that's what I want!
io shrouds are a plage that must be eradicated. But people, please learn how to manage electronics so electrical engineers can trust you not to put your hand right on the electronics because you handle them like sandwiches instead of holding them by the edges like you're supposed to. I mean, look at me boy Optimum Tech here, holding his motherboard with his fingers right over ESD-sensitive electronics for 9 minutes while sitting on a chair. With this level of ignorance, it's no wonder electrical engineers are covering components in plastic in the form of io shrouds, GPU backplates, memory heatsinks, etc. This is a case where collective ignorance is making products more expensive and less effective. ELECTRONICS ARE NOT SANDWICHES! DON'T HOLD THEM LIKE SANDWICHES!
The mounting of the Black Ridge on AM4 is horrible to say the least. The poor mainboard was bending. Luckily I had the Noctua L9 backplate available...
It's be great if you could do an apples to apples test between the low profile coolers. Your data has too many variables to be useful at the moment with variance in fan RPM. Might be worth having a standard 120mm fan at a certain RPM used to test out all the 120mm coolers and the same with the 92mm coolers just to give a raw baseline of the difference between the base heatsinks. Other than that great video/shots. (This was meant to be constructive rather than critical btw, just from an end user perspective I'd love to see which cooler unit actually performs best with fan/RPM/ambient being equal)
I love the windows in the background with the lights I also got the cooler with my DAN A4 for an additional 20 bucks and swapped to the noctua, it's so much quieter but I didn't change the fan direction Maybe I should try that
You need to always run it as an intake. You also need an airduct in the DAN A4, because although the distance to the side panel isn't far, the holes are too restrictive. The fan will suck recycled air from within the case without it. Just a simple taped on cardboard duct is enough. I've seen someone in the SFF forum drop 15° C with that.
Very important note here: the noctua NF-A9x14 used in the video is 0.21 Amps but you can only purchase the NF-A9x14 0.11 Amps from retailers. The 0.21A version only comes with noctua's heatsinks. The difference can be up to 10ºC, please up this to it can be known. Important EDIT: The 0.21A fan you are looking for (also in black) is Noctua NF-A9x14 HS-PWM
It can run 3900x stock with 2 noctua fan setup, better than cryorig c7g, and noctua l9x65. But temp will be high, around 90-ish and almost hit max (95°)
Thanks to your reviews i have become a sff lover. First i have built a fractal design node 304 super budget itx case. Then i have tried NZXT Manta and it was too big didnt like it, now i am using InWIn A1 Plus and it is absolutely perfect for my need. You always try premium cases such as dan case or ncase or loque but i think it is time to try inwin a1 plus. I will also looking for a loque but way expensive and try to find a bargain or second hand or else it is too much. Keep doing what you do mate, cheers from Sweden.
Hello there @Optimum Tech! Amazing review! Love your work. Inspired me to get my own Dan A4. Noise would be the main concern for this build, so which would be quieter? Black Ridge or Asetek 645LT?
I think something very important to note with this cooler is that it can block the top pci-e slot requiring your gpu to use a riser cable. Of course this isn't an issue with the Dan A4 it's designed for, but say you get the cooler in preparation for moving to a smaller case further down the line, you may not be able to use the cooler until you also have the case.
When you do get the M1 V6 and the Crosshair VIII Impact can you do a fit test, I'm worried the m.2 drive daughterboard won't fit along with the 240mm radiator and fans
Looks great. I'm just hoping noctua releases a slim 92mm fan in chromax like the one on the new chromax l9i. I would love to use that fan instead of the stock one to keep that sleek color scheme.
I just ordered VLP ram and a black ridge cooler! Super excited. I also ordered a VERY old set of VLP server ram to harvest the black heat spreaders for keeping my purple Adata ram cool. Wish me luck! All the parts are coming from different parts of the world, hopefully I will be able to make a truly beautiful set up in my black K39 case.
Great review as always. 2 suggestions for future videos: 1) NCase M1 V6 review (I'm sure you're planning on it) and 2) A video/tutorial on modding a FlexATX PSU with a Noctua 40mm fan for the Velka 3.
Do you think motherboard manufacturers or aftermarket companies offering custom fin design VRM cooling solutions would help solve this? A super beefy version of this (with fin cutouts for Ram clearance) designed only for a pull configuration would make this thing an "everything killer" and would be a cool solution when AMD moves APU's 7nm + Navi graphics, as motherboard designers might not need the exra PCIE x16 slot, or that slot could be used with an IO card to add extra PCIE devices and NVME.
Would you say this thing is capable of handling a Ryzen 9 5950X @ 120W PPT? I plan on getting a Dr Zaber Sentry 2.0 Case, and the max clearance for it is 47mm. As such, I'm torn between getting either this thing, or the ID-COOLING IS-47K. I'm torn on which one to go with here.
looks interesting at first... but not so interesting after all, at least for my louqe ghost. The L9x65 offers pretty similar performance without the issue of fitting in biffy MB like the Aorus X570i. Could be great with the combo of A9x14 + A12x25 for temps, but I will get the same issue of noise as with the L9x65, as the fan is too close of the side panel and makes a jet wisthle noise... For aircooling the louqe ghost, the best solution for now is a slightly bent L12S, and if the fan doesnt fit like on the X570i, you swap it for a A9x14, so you get a custom made L12 non S. And you can use the original fan as a case fan.
About a year ago i was set on going for a SFF high end build but later reconsidered after realizing what a PITA SFF is and the amount of compromise especially when space isn't an issue. Opting to keep a mid tower build will let me reuse parts like the DH-15 and PSU as well, still cool seeing whats possible when you use every inch of space available.
Great video, thanks for this! I'm looking into upgrading my Dan A4 case and buying a Ryzen 5 7600 (65w TDP) CPU together with Strix B650E-I mobo and i'm now considering this Alpenfohn kooler combined with the Noctua A9x14 fan. Did you mount the fan as intake (sucking air towards the CPU) or as outtake (blowing air from the CPU to outside case)? One other remark.. did this leave sufficient space to use the PCI slot on the motherboard and what backplate did you use to mount the cooler? Awesome stuff!
Yes, didn't see a camera angle that would confirm you can use the slot? The camera kept cutting off a complete view of the space available. Looks blocked. Since designed for Dan A4, must use riser cable?
For most motherboards, it does cover the slot. The CPU cooler was designed with risers in mind. You will have to do some research to see which ones are exceptions. - -'
After looking for half a day I found this two RAMs on Kingston's website: 16GB Module - DDR4 2400MHz Server Premier www.kingston.com/unitedstates/us/memory/search?partId=KSM24RS4L%2F16MEI 16GB Module - DDR4 2666MHz Server Premier www.kingston.com/unitedstates/us/memory/search?partId=KSM26RD8L%2F16MEI Additionally Kingston released a PCN (Product Change Notice) for both RAMs as of 02/03/2020: "Due to supply changes and to reflect market conditions, a DRAM speed grade allowance (2666MHz to 3200MHz) is authorized for Server Premier parts using the same DRAM die revision of Micron E: MT40A1G8SA-075:E to MT40A1G8SA-062E:E Micron E 3200 grade (062) DRAM to be allowed to substitute 2666/2400 (075) grade. Faster DRAM grade is backwards compatible, no BOM change or requalification required." [sic!] I hope this'll help.
Hello, i have a dream with somewhat out dated parts. I have a z270i asus rog strix, with a 7700k. I want to put this cooler in my node202w/o cpu dust filter, with 120 on the bottom and the 140cryorig xl 13mm fan ontop supported on the case instead of heatsink. Only problem is finding vlp dimm that are compatible with my system. Any recommendations?
Gear vid! I was looking for this! Can you please recommend good motherboard and smallest case for this fan based on new Razer CPU? My new PC is for music production so I do not need graphic card. Just the HDMI out on motherboard. I am planning to build nmalles and most quiet PC possible. Any advice is helpful. Thanks!
The Velka 3 using a power brick and an MSI gaming plus ac b450i motherboard may be a good choice? In that configuration you may even be able to utilise a sound card as long as it’s single slot.
can you compare this cooler to the ID-Cooling IS-60? I'm looking to build a sliger sm550 with one of these similar coolers. getting mixed answers online.
I bought the alpenfon black ridge, but when I flip the fan around, it makes a very annoying high pitch whine and is NOT usable in that configuration. Any solutions?
Will this really not be able to cool a 3900x even if i to set the total power of the 3900x on the ryzen master? Or given that my case clearance would allow me to add another slim fan at the top? Will the orientation also be Top [Intake] & Bottom [Intake]?
Can we see that chart updated with competitors with noctua fan swaps? like the cryorig C7 graphene with a noctua fan, Ranjitek Pallas 120 with noctua fan etc.
I thought this was a pretty cool review. I have moved to water cooling for all of my newest builds but seeing an awesome air cooler like this makes me consider doing an air cooled rig next time because those temps are perfectly acceptable if your using certain CPUs
waiting on my mine im setting it up with 2 noctua fans for my ghost. im going to try putting the 2500 rpm 92mm fan on one of the low noise adapters noctua has, it says it lowers its rpm by about 30%, to match the 1850 rpm of the 120mm fan more evenly then connecting both those with a y cable to the cpu header. that should balance the noise and airflow
ouch im in planing on trying to find "best posible cooler for ghost s1 That is air cooled for 3900x cus i already have that cpu and i dont really wanna switch
i got my black ridge v2 today. idle temp around 42 celcius, prime 95 full load 95 celcius. b450i strix, ryzen 5 3600. i use a noctua a9x14, intake setup. my memory is lpx 3200c16 x 2.
@@ericwang3579 ah really do u underclocking r5 3600 using black ridge v2? which case do u use? I already got my r5 3600 today and go trough update bios for my motherboard to suit this new ryzen...
I also have the B450 I Gaming motherboard from Asus. Do I have to remove the heatsink from the M.2 slot? And does the SSD still work without the heatsink? Would love to use the Black Ridge Cooler tho
So the correct orientation of the bottom fan is blowing downwards toward the motherboard. But what is the correct orientation of the top fan? Should it be blowing upwards or downards?
The dual fan setup, do other coolers support this? Might be a nice selling point and perhaps the better option for a silent configuration (2 slow spinning fans vs 1 fast spinning).
Based on his data, I'd conclude they would be about equal with only a lower fan configuration. However, because of the lower height of this Alpenfohn, it becomes possible to add in a second fan which I might expect to dramatically improve cooling performance, albeit at the expense of some increase in noise.
