The only prerequisite for giving your best to someone should be love. If you are going to lead a relationship (which Myron also advocates), your partner is going to be a reflection of you. That isn't transactional, unless of course you go down the Dave Chappelle contract skit route.

The fact of the matter is people tend to match their partner's energy which is intrinsically transactional. If you're consistent in performing love/duty to your partner, you'll be afforded slack if you _temporarily_ can't uphold your end of the agreement (if you get sick, lose employment, have a few "off days," etc.) But not holding up your end long term and expecting your partner to continue doing all that they usually do for you "because they love you" is an unrealistic expectation. I guarantee you wouldn't stick around either if the shoe was on the other foot. This is also the case for all non-romantic relationships (with the exception of a parent's love/duty to their children, the only true form of unconditional love I can think of.)
