Also Known as Alpine Butterfly Loop Revisited Quick Tie Version - Alpine Loop Lineman's Rider Lineman's Loop Knot
Geoffry Budworth: This is a European mountaineering classic middleman's tie on.
The Alpine Butterfly Loop is one of the best loop knots that is tied in the bight of a rope. The loop is particularly strong and will hold from any point from where it is being pulled.
Due to the symmetry of the Alpine knot, it is easy to inspect for security.
This knot was originally used by Linemen and especially telephone engineers. "It is absolutely secure and will hold from any point from which it is drawn." (Burger).

@@KnottingKnots Oh, I the knots that I do know can be counted on my fingers, so I consider myself a toddler when it comes to knotting ;) However, these knots have each improved my daily routines already, so maybe "Practical Knotter" would become a fitting description in time... Practical, I use some of these in camping and around the house items. My friends on our recent camping trip with very impressed with a blake hitch used for an adjustable hammock ridgeline, a marlin spike hitch for a hammock strap that didn't come with existing loops, and prussiks for moving a tarp around to keep rain off our camp fire.

I also found that on the last hand wrap if you lay it in the second position instead of the right position, you won't need to pull the middle line under the right line and save a step. You'd then wrap the right line over the left and through. This also applies for making a double loop alpine butterfly.

Johnny Debt, It's not that you really want to go over the side of a cliff (but with climbers you never know). If you *need* to go over the side of a cliff, and wish to not go splat as a result... Here's an example from my long ago days as a climber: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91Nc31eMw6L.jpg That isn't me in the picture, but it's something everyone who's ever climbed in Boulder, Colorado has done. It is truly exhilarating. BTW MrGattor33, "rappelling" is spelled like this. Repelling is something certain chemicals do to insects. 😉

Hi Johnny, great video. My scout leader told me its used in mountaineering (“alpine” climbing?) in a situation where the group has to rope together, e.g. in poor visibility so the group doesn’t separate. If a third person wants to join the line between an existing pair, they can create this loop in the middle and join the line without anyone else having to untie. The created loop could either be used as a hand hold, or for attaching to a climbing harness with a carabiner.

This was the first way i learned the alpine butterfly As someone mentioned, similar to Farmers Loop method which is virtually unforgettable once learned ....L-R-L-R. The farmers loop is my go to in a truckers hitch because you can make it directional to one way or the other depending on which way you tuck it first In addition, a future vid could be on the Alpine Butterfly Bend. Right up there with the Zeppelin Bend but with tag ends coming out the same side

I work in construction, and we use several types of knots, on the job. It's always sad when I see someone trying to use a bad knot, or not knowing the better knot for certain applications. Yes, I know what you are saying. There will be situations where you may need a loop in the bight of a rope, so that would be the go to knot. Also if you have a damaged piece of rope you could make it so that the damaged piece of the rope becomes the loop. This way your rope will still be strong, but the damaged part does not take any weight. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

I use something called "float line" also called "Floating Safety Rope" that I use for practising with. It is a braided line and not too slippery and is 6mm in diameter. The problem you have if you are just starting out, is that not all ropes are the same. Some are too soft and floppy whilst others are like wrestling with thick wire.

I almost always have a short piece of 550 cordage in my pocket... typically 1½ to 2 feet long. This, along with the constrictor and the double-constrictor, are my "fidget" knots. I tie the Alpine Butterfly knot a bit differently. The 3rd wrap around my hand goes _between_ the 1st and 2nd wraps where they cross my palm. (Those first 2 wraps will then form an "X" on the backside of my hand) Then I grab the rightmost wrap, pull some slack, and send it over the other two, towards my thumb, and under... like you're doing @2:31. After pulling out any slack, a proper yank on the "loose" ends will set the knot. Hope that's as clear as mud. BTW, I just found where I picked up that technique: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8BZWFTpkkIw.html
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 6 лет назад
There is always some clarity in mud?? Not ;-) My fidget knots are, like you the constrictor, the marlin spike hitch and I always end up doing a cowboy or bowline from that, the Evenk hitch and the adjustable grip hitch.

You can use the same method to tie two lines together. It would be nice if you were to put up a video showing how to do that. Essentially, loop around your hand and hold the bitter end between two middle fingers. Then take the bitter end of the other line between the two fingers and loop that one around. FInally pull the two bitter ends over around and through the two lines on your palm, just like you do the loop end in the video above. Voila, an alpine loop that joins two lines.

Sir, I noticed by accident that this method of tying the alpine butterfly loop can also be used to tie a bottle sling knot. After you wrap the cord arround your hand three times, then move the left wrap between the middle and the right wraps, then pull the new left wrap over both the others and back up underneath them (sliding along your palm) , you can then convert the knot into a jug sling instead of the butterfly knot. All you have to do is to NOT pull knot tight. Instead, pull the wrappings away from your hand - leaving a byte at the top and a circle in the middle. You may have to dress the circle a bit. Then turn the knot over and push the circle down on top of a bottle and dress the knot carefully to tighten on the bottle. I can make a video if that will help. It seems to grip very tightly if dressed properly and is a lot easier to tie than the normal instructions.

I what area do you plan to head towards? If this is the way that you are going to go, you must be looking at many different bushcraft and related sites. If there is one knot that I can recommend to you, it is the Marlin Spike Hitch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3r2UjaV8SVg.html this one knot can do so much! I do also plan to update this video as I have found more. I would really love for you to stay in touch with me. I think of you as going on an adventure, not sure if you think of it that way?

Which is better... Alpine or Artillery loop???

The Alpine is renowned amongst climbers as the go to midline loop due to is security. What are your plans for a mid line loop?

The perfect tie method when your nice and cosy at home in the warm. Half way up an ice wall with frozen gloved fingers... not quite so useful.
