We received some new info from HP after CES about the Omen Transcend 14: The $2000 price is for the configuration we had at CES and the actual starting price is $1499. Also, the construction is aluminum with a sandblasted anodized finish.
The funny thing is, they're still making good margin on that price when using soldered RAM. I don't mean they're overcharging, but that it's *still* at a quarter the price of competitors a good money maker for HP. Just puts into perspective how extortionate Apple and Dell are. 50 is reasonable.
And it's good RAM too at that. Insane speeds. 32GB of this and you will probably never need to upgrade in the life of this laptop. I doubt you will ever need more RAM on a 14" thin and light anyway. This is soldered RAM that finally doesn't get me mad.
@@azenyr It's the best RAM you can currently get i believe, they obviously optimized the trace lengths to get that speed. At any rate it's easily superior to what apple is charging 4x the price for. They're using the same BGA's they did in 2021/2020
There has to be at least one artist at Linus media group who could chime in with *some* sort of info on the touch screen/tablet mode/pen support other than "I don't care" It's a 2-in-1, completely bypassing the tablet mode is like reviewing a gaming rig and saying "it's got a graphics card or something, I don't know. It will definitely run League of Legends."
They've never really covered tablets much TBH, so this is just an extension of that. On one hand, I suppose it could be worth having someone to specialize in covering those sorts of devices; on the other hand, that segment just seems to move at a glacial pace compared to the rest of the industry.
@@RyTrapp0 I don't think it's fair to say that digital art has moved at a glacial pace, it's just been separate for a long time with companies like wacom. I can see that kind of stuff being too specialized. But when main stream 2-in-1s are starting to enter into that space, being shipped with pens and advertised for digital art, I think it's worth touching on. Obviously this video had limited access and only one person to look at specs and do a brief first impression, I'm just complaining in the comments that I would like to see more said about those kind of art features when companies present them. I know LTT group reads their comments.
At what point do we just have magnetic connectors already? I often think that people overreact when design flaws come up with products and many claim that it's 'planned obsolescence'(I mean, that is a thing, just not like many seem to think), I whole heartedly believe that 'Hanlon's Razor' is the answer more often than not. But I'll be damned if laptop charging ports aren't planned obsolescence, we can't get an ounce of R&D in THIS area lmao. DC barrel jacks are the work of the devil
Holy shit that omen has a 90W RTX 4070 despite being so thin blows my mind. I guess we need a follow up testing for that one. Anyways damn that's one hella crazy thing!
Other 14" gaming laptops (at least in the same price segment) have 100+ W TGP for GPU, and they're not much thicker (like 1-3mm at best) so I wouldn't consider impressive. They're more likely limited on this Omen because of that 140W charger (Power Deliver 3.1 only)
Pretty hype for some 14 gaming laptops with dgpu that is pure USB c pd for power. I liked my g14 but the power brick charger does make the overall backpack space more than you'd think. Can't wait to see how it compares with other 4060 4070 laptops.
When I had a G14 I set up an 90W power limit profile in G-Helper for 100W type-C gaming. 25W CPU limit and 65W GPU limit with the screen capped at 60hz to save some power on the panel. Sure, not as fast as the full 85W CPU and 105W GPU, but it was still better than the iGPU-only I had set up on battery with a 15W cap (basically converts to 6900HS to 6800U).
HP just upgraded their quality. Love that... But still HP, remove any software... Please... I had to downgrade my HP to W10 because there was one driver feature bugged in W11... And my laptop came out 1 year before W11... (and that issue is related to tablet mode for a 2in1 laptop and also modern standby... For this laptop it is a nightmare on W11... Also their AMD support... Really a nightmare...)
Nice to see they've gone back to removable wifi card on the Spectre x360. We dropped Spectre (and HP) from our org after using them for 5 years... because they soldered in the wifi cards on the last models we used. Manufactured e-waste stuck in wifi 5 land.
And...I don't understand what comments like these add to the discussion of these products. Something will always be too expensive for someone. So? Do we have to hear this stupid comment every damn time? Tech is always expensive new. It's not even discussion on value vs cost or anything less brain dead than "dur dur it's expensive...dur dur" .
I wish to see a HP Omen 14 vs Asus Zenbook gaming battle showdown. Heck maybe drop in the Alien and others to see a smart formfactor gaming laptop battle this year!
i understand soldered ram now because it means 1. it can be thin and 2. it can be fast. love the webcam. love the haptic trackpad butttttttttttt where's the amd apu?!?!?!?!? surely that would work great in this. and hp/amd had a great partnership with the envy lines.
How did crab rave sound on the spectre? Did you check? The speakers are a weak point on the 2023 spectre, but it's otherwise really good (compared to the old diamond cut models).
I hate that HP locks down drivers for the keyboard and fingerprint reader. I really like my spectre 14 but it gets hot on windows so I run lunux now. Why can't I have a working keyword HP? Also, they removed an option to charge the battery to 80% some time ago. I paid good money for the laptop and I want that feature.
Don't ever trust battery life claims from HP. Their battery life tests are almost aways done in complete idle at the desktop with wifi OFF and brightness at 250 nits (kinda low). Any modern laptop can get amazing battery like that... real use expect like 50% of what they claim, at best, on any HP laptop.
From whatever videos I have seen Zeyphrus G14 looks the best. Some youtuber tested G14 OLED screen can touch 800 nits peak HDR brightness can't remember the window size though. It has great speakers also and full RGB keyboard. When are you showing us ?
Haptic touchpad, variable refresh rate, and that spectacular webcam are all pretty nice upgrades over the last model! However, I'm a bit worried about the battery life for the Spectre considering it ONLY comes with an OLED. But considering the Zenbook 14X OLED is getting about the same battery life as the Macbook Air, I would assume it would be pretty good. Wish it would come in actual silver though. Also, HP probably is reporting accurate battery specs for its higher end models, but in my experience, they have been reporting double or even triple the real battery life on its models like the Pavilion or lower. Also also, the 16" starts at $1598.99 US.
Hp pavilion Plus 14 (68 Wh) with #AMD 7840U has 10 to 11 hours of BATTERY. Hp spectre x360 14 (68 Wh) with #Intel Core ULTRA 7 155H has 14 to 15 hours of BATTERY. 😱 Intel laptops BATTERY life is as good as MacBook M2/M3 even though Intel is using Tiles/Chiplet. Impressive🤯 💪
currently have the 2021 model of spectre x360 and i use it with an egpu, the 16 gb of ram has been such a bottleneck so if i can get the 3:2 form factor with 32 gb of ram then im sold on a new hp
HP finally ditching Intel Arc discrete graphics and moving back to Nvidia on the Spectre is a good move (that's what stopped me from recommending it before), and with Dell's questionable choices for the XPS I think the Spectre is a really good alternative premium Windows laptop.
they ditching the intel Iris X, the new meteorlake apus have the intel Arch insted of the Iris which is more than 2x stronger. The Spectre 14 has Arch only.
@@Antal46 Yep. In 2023s model though the HP Spectre maxed out with an Arc A370M which was quite bad compared to the 40-series Nvidia cards, and that's why I never considered it. This year they have an RTX 4050 option which is a far better option.
I have the late 2019 model, and I absolutely love it! I've been seeing a few looks at the new 2024 16" model, and IT LOSES THE NUM PAD!!! WHY!!! I use mine almost every day. The side speakers look dumb and you're losing functionality. I was really looking forward to this revision and can't fathom why they would remove a num pad on a productivity focused laptop!
The new RAM speeds are insane! 7467mhz is industry leading. Keep in mind the M3 Pro RAM speed is 6400mhz. Team Windows/Linux: Apple said their RAM was twice as fast, so we took that personally.
Do more 15 or 16-inchers have vapor chambers this year? Cuz I swear with the help of a vapor chamber the larger SKUs could sustain 115-125W to the GPU with an 85-99Wh battery while keeping the weight down to 2kg or less.
I've had my Omen 17 for several years now and sitting away from it right now I cannot even remember if it has a trackpad. I know it must but honestly have not used it in years.
Be honest, you might “use” the DV7 sometimes but what computer do you actually use? Because this comment implies you use your dv7 as your main computer which… yeah no way. I call bs.
@@BahhBahhBrownSheep outside my phone it's the dv7, it's literally on my coffee table right now. To be fair i am in the process of piecing together a PC right now. The dv7 still works great, specifically mines the dv7-6b56nr, upgraded to Windows 10 with the only casualty being I lost my fingerprint reader. Still get 3 hours out of the battery.
All Brands are using the new Intel Core Ultra on their 2024 products , Ryzen in the other hand didnt get that attention, maybe their mobile APU is way far from what intel has been offered bcs the 780m is a hell of an iGPU
Given MTL's delays, I wonder if most of these designs were already ready to launch for Q3 2023 and manufacturers simply have to get them out now. If it was just as easy as flipping a switch, I'd also suspect that many OEMs would've massively gone Ryzen by now. Unfortunately (for consumers), it's not that easy. I at least would prefer Hawk Point and even Phoenix any time over MTL. Be that as it may, 2024 will show how much of a stranglehold Intel still has over OEMs. As soon as Strix launches, we'll either see widespread adoption or we'll see the same MTL designs get refreshes. That's when we'll know if it's about the superior design or if Intel's simply stuffing the channels again.
@@danieloberhofer9035 Me too, i would prefer Ryzen over Intel all the time...at least 3 years ago when Vega7/8 laptops were cheap as dirt, i dont feel the same since laptop brands start using OLED and fancy CNC materiels..... well i dont have the right to talk since i live in closed country where the imporation services sucks the only way to buy dollar currency is the black market
The problem with pixel voltage for VRR technologies is nothing new. If MSI has adjusted it for a few fixed frame rates, why doesn't any manufacturer bother to adjust it manually from at least 38 - 120/165hz and eliminate the VRR flickering? All manufacturers are probably waiting for LG Display and Samsung Display so that they can solve the problem on the hardware level themselves.
The diagonal port can actually be quite useful, I have an older spectre model and charging it while working on the couch or in bed with the cable a bit out of the way is great. As for the keyboard - most 13/14 inchers do not have it as the keyboard will be quite crammed, but it's good on a 15-16 inch ones
Damn i got to know about the spectre from this video and i didn't know such a good laptop existed on the windows side and that from hp? It's truly funny. I want to know if there's any previous owners of the spectre in the comments is the laptop good are there any issues?
Does the HP omen have the haptic touchpad? Also thank you for being the 1st reviewer i have seen that mention that the omen 14 doesnt have a touchscreen.
Hyper X headphone bundle... Does this mean that built-in speakers are not as good? I love listening to audiobooks and podcasts in bed before I fall asleep. Any headphones in this situation are uncomfortable. This could be a dealbreaker to me if the built-in speakers are below average. Could you, please, clarify this in your future review?
People who were thinking of abandoning windows to get an apple silicone Mac have a lifeline now. Nice to see the MacBooks no longer have a monopoly on well rounded hardware (build quality, screen, speakers, sensible io, sensible and quick specs).
If you're getting a laptop for future use, save yourself the trouble and get the 32GB version. Storage was never really a big problem even for soldered down models (at a minimum of 512GB) because you can always add an extra SD card or external USB drive. (Or cloud storage)
lol if you think soldered storage is okay, you’re insane. Especially if you also think an SD card or cloud based storage is convenient or fast enough. Frankly I’m really disappointed you got any likes on this opinion.
@@BahhBahhBrownSheep I don't like soldered down storage either, but sometimes you're out of luck. Cloud based storage is convenient though. At least for me it is. I was just listing down some solutions. The best would be to buy a laptop where everything was swapable.
I got a spectre 14, the screen looks amazing and the touchpad is awesome. So far I love it, except the keyboard because it's a bit worse than what I have on my dead lenovo yoga 7 and because it is not really ISO (European) layout it is some kind of a mix but it looks like most brands doing this now so I wont return it.
