I conceded on the framing thing a long time ago. These pictures are being taken for Pokémon researchers, not photographers or artists. When you view it like that and realize that it's up to you as the photographer to take your own artistic shots, it feels a lot better. Though they could've had a separate grading mode where maybe they bring in Todd to grade pictures as a photographer, not as a researcher. It would give it that much more replayability and teach players actual photography techniques.
I completely agree. I didn't feel that way in the first game, the first game felt much more like "Pokemon Photography: The Game". But New Snap really drives home the realism of the idea that you're on a research expedition, and the entire purpose of the photos is merely to document Pokemon on their appearance and behavior. It makes perfect sense that scientists would, primarily, want the subjects to be relatively centered, and as large as possible without any part of them cut off. The facing the camera bit is a bit odd, since you definitely miss certain features on Pokemon if you don't see all sides of them, but in a world where it's a video game and they wanted to add another category to rate you on, I can live with the idea that we are just laying the groundwork for future researchers, and trying to get these face-forward pictures for the sake of consistency, so scientists can look at a picture and know exactly what they are looking at based on what they know a Pokemon looks like from the front. Even if you have any argument against all of that, it's no doubt a million times easier to detect when something is centered, than it is to create an algorithm which can consider the full artistic merit of a photo. At best you could get the rule of thirds in there, maybe even detect the range of contrast between different parts of the photo, but it would no doubt lead to some odd ratings, not unlike in its current state. At the end of the day it just becomes really convoluted, when it's supposed to just be simple and fun.
Also, the centering was a big issue in the first game because it doubled your points and was pretty much a requirement to have any sort of competent score on a photo. If you didn't get that centered shot, your photo was basically considered worthless. It's much more forgiving in this game, to the point that you can even follow rule of thirds or turning photos that you think look better, and still get a decent rating on their position. You'll lose a few points but its not like the entire score rides on the Pokemon being in the exact center. As long as its not small and literally riding the edge of the frame, you're good.
The thing i am most happy and impressed about, is that they opted to go for the not so popular mons in the game, rather than the popular ones. Surely, there are still some popular choices in the game, but they are kinda under-represented, which i do like a lot.
They really disregarded whther they're popular or unpopular but focused on how visually or environmentally interesting they are. They really thought about their selection based on their vision.

@@lisabarnes924 The old courses from the previous game, besides the power station area, has too much overlap with existing levels in New Pokemon Snap. I doubt they would remake them.
I feel ths is the kind of game that really needs to have a demo for people to try out. For real, all games should have but this being such an unorthodox experience needs it the most.
It looks SO PRETTY. Im not a graphics guy at all, but as a fan of the pokemon series its crazy what Bandai Namco did with the switch in comparison to GameFreak
As a nature photographer this game is amazing! I loved the original. I'm constantly trying to get better photos of the pokemon. I love the album features.
I'd imagine that would take a huge ammount of manpower, money and experience making sandbox games, game freak has the first 2 but sadly lacks on the third one, bandai namco's relationship seems to be very strong with nintendo, maybe they and gamefreak can team up for the next pokemon generation, anyhow pokemon legends seems to be a step in the right direction.
@@omarreyes7626 To tell the truth Game Freak may not have the manpower because it seems Masuda wants direct monitoring of everything so it has to be small (which shouldn't be IMO) - if we have Bandai Namco on board I think he can still keep that to a degree and just let BN do the heavy lifting.
@@dairhatZelda Team has a different style to them, at least with Bandai Namco they already have Pokken and New Snap, has experience with Digimon, and has the assets already prepared - they seem like a good colloboration partner at the moment.
Yes it is. Played 12 hours this weekend, got to the end credits and still have lot more to do. Can see myself playing this for a long time trying to make my way up the photodex leaderboard. Also my 3 old daughter absolutely loves taking pictures with me! Think she's going to be a pokemon fan now.
The only thing I don't understand is evolution events being non-existent. Could you imagine the unique evolution pictures there could have been? And part of the fun of the original was figuring out the evolution puzzles.
Those were a highlight, for sure. I’d say hopefully they’ll be encouraged to do evolutions in a sequel, but idk if I’ll be alive 20 years from now to see a sequel lol
@@retloclive9118 I’m wondering how that could be done in a way that feels cohesive with the game. If they’re new levels, then it’ll make the old levels seem like a different game. If they’re adapted into existing levels, they might feel shoehorned in, like they don’t have their own proper focus.
Yeah while I feel it's compensated by the other new features (illumina and revisiting stages), it really is a shame. Just left me scratching my head like... why not?
What Alex is missing in this case is that the photos you're taking for the Professor are research materials and not necessarily "art" pieces. Thats why they want centered, properly sized specimen images. The re-snapping exists so you can essentially "Photoshop" your artistic photos for your gallery AFTER turning in your academic photograph homework. XD But yeah... theres a reason Oak was always critical about your pokemon not being properly in frame. lol
I think the reason a lot of people aren’t impressed with the concept of taking pictures of Pokémon, is because now we all have cameras on us at all times. Back in the 90s if a family had a camera, it was one camera for the whole family, that came out on special occasions only. If you were a teen you might buy a disposable Kodak for the school dance. It was in the mid to late 2000s everyone started having digital cameras, but even then those were only carried around for special occasions or parties. Now our cameras on us 24/7. The special moments of taking a photograph are gone.
Agree. Also there are plenty of people who don't take alot of pics and I feel they won't get as much out of the game. I'm a photographer and I'm constantly trying to get a better shot of every single pokemon. I don't mind the grinding because I can always improve a shot.
Find it funny the amount of comments like 'so it's just a rail shooter?', 'so it's just taking photos (shooting)' 'how is that worth $60?' It's such a bizarre fallacy. How is Smash $60 it's just fighting? How is Mario Kart $60 its just driving around? 'This game has the gameplay of its genre' is not a valid criticism. It's a new game that cost money to make and clearly had a lot of effort put into it. Lots of content, beautiful courses, a wealth of editing tools, a social hub, achievements etc. The industry standard for new games is $60. It's fine to say a genre isn't for you but to say it's inherently worth less because it's not an RPG or whatever is bizarre to me.
@@PrestoJacobson that was an example of a stupid criticism, yes. Smash is as much 'just fighting' as any other fighting game; as Snap is as much 'just shooting' as any other shooter game. Pointing out a game's genre is not a valid criticism.

@@alexpotts6520 I've definitely seen people complaining about the basic idea of the core gameplay not being their cup of tea. It's silly. I've also seen criticisms about the amount of content, though I am personally satisfied.
I personally would’ve preferred a couple more stages and maybe 100 more Pokémon to earn the full price, but I gotta say this is pure Pokémon soul food. Feeling like you’re in the Pokémon world and just in this rich wilderness of the Pokémon universe is therapeutic and comforting
This game is by far one of the best looking games on the switch! I have never played the original one but this one is really fun! The short answer is yes it's worth it!
This game was more than I expected and wanted and I'm here for it. I enjoy the game so much, especially with a full time job and full life taking hold of me, I can sit down and still enjoy this game and get curious enough to replay the levels. This game makes pokemon feel as though they are real creatures and even has you feel a bit of nostalgia to the og one and yet, holds it's own place. I am glad it came out, and I've been so out of the loop, it surprised me when I saw it in store to get it. This game is worth it in my opinion, but as all games, is not made for everyone.
It’s nice to see a reviewer that appreciates the game. I just got tired of hearing complaints that you have to take photos of a Pokémon four times or that the quality didn’t matter for progression
My only complaint is that you can only ReSnap a photo after completing that route. So if I'm in editing and find out I need to change the brightness its gg
Loving the game, except the annoying thing is mainly how inconsistent the star ratings seem to be. Kills the experience a little bit for me from time to time. I'll have numerous photos with different star ratings but they all look exactly the same.
Is it weird that I am trying to span out my initial playthrough? Like Im doing a few expeditions a day. I think I'm subconsciously trying prolong the game itself. I can easily see the replay ability in this game but somehow want it to last forever.

I think the starter selection is genius. You get the nostalgic gen 1 Pokémon for the people who played Pokémon Snap back in the day. Then you get the more recent 3ds/switch starter Pokémon for the people who may actually get this game as first timers
@@sackthebastard I really think they could. Have you ever played Ni No Kuni? It was published by Bandai Namco and developed by Level 5. I loved it and it felt like everything I wish the Pokémon series was. It has evolutions, real-time turn-based combat, amazing visuals, great voice acting, and an amazing story. If you love Pokémon, it's definitely worth checking out. :)
This game is such a delight to play normally. If you're going for completion, however, it's a nightmare without a guide. So many requests are just too cryptic to figure out by yourself. Honestly, most of them are.
@@chr1s415 Just a gift from the professor for example, maybe you can get special Pokemon based on the Illumina Pokemon, where if you have New Snap in the save file, you get that as a gift.
@@zjzr08 in order for that to work they will need to add snap to be compatible with pokemon home. It's just better off they give us a pokemon through mystery gift. Probably a meganium but we Probably won't get anything like that.
@@chr1s415 Not necessarily, you could do it like with Pokemon Ranger where you can use a code, or as I said a save file triggering something to SwSh, just like the Let's Go bonus for Dynamax Pikachu and Eevee.

I’m really enjoying this game, it’s so cute ❤️ The only complaint I have as a fan of the original is that the new map music doesn’t hold a candle to the N64 game. It would be amazing if they added the old music to the new maps as a DLC or something
Yes thank you Alex for addressing rule of thirds! I have the game and I am an avid photographer. Finally someone addresses this. Yes I am a little annoyed by the way the game handles what makes a good photo but then I tell myself, this game is aimed at everyone so I can understand why this is the case. Still fun.

I think the game is amazing the only thing for me is the music I think that department could have been a bit better and mire cheering. Also remember the photos are for a scientific report and not for artistic purposes...
This is a game I can never see the appeal of or justify the purchase to try it out, but I am happy for everyone who does enjoy it, and I do enjoy seeing all the great pictures

tbf and honest the environment feels like a Wii game geometry, pokemons look ok? i guess, but this game should have gone super surrealist with the maps , like they got way too close to the limitations of n64 in terms of geometry and decoration or robustness on the plants and things around the map. It looks like a 3ds repurposed game just like pokemon sword and shield.
can we walk/explore around the place and take pictures of pokemon in different angles in this game? like in zelda botw camera way. Im thinking if i buy this game or not.
You’re on a fixed track, but you get a 360 view. Some stages also have alternate pathways you can unlock that will let you branch out, and then most stages have a night version. The angles can be quite varied since Pokémon move and your proximity to them changes as you move along the track. (You can edit photos after the fact and adjust angles further but I haven’t bothered playing around with that feature yet.) 👍
I think it’s important to know guys that we’re adults! We can’t talk to kids on the playground to find out secrets, we just go online. We think of games differently than as kids. I like playing this game but this is made for a younger age group in my opinion. I think it’s important to understand the audience and to understand where we personally fit in within that audience.
IMO. This game proves that Bugsnax could work on Switch. I hope its not Sony Exclusive though. I still hold out hope that it may get ported. It was such a charming adventure
I kept hearing people complain about there not being many levels before I played the game. So going in I was expecting a short game. Turns out they were all wrong. There are more than enough courses. I never felt like “damn can’t believe it’s over already.” It’s like three times longer than the original so idk why people complained about it.
The professor over here is just trying to get some nice, clear pictures of as many Pokemon to study as he can, and all of a sudden his assistant he's not paying is talking about the rule of thirds and making his pictures more dramatic and pretty or about expressing himself through his pictures.
Unlike Balan Wonderworld, New Pokémon Snap truly didn’t need a follow-up video, since Jon’s review already did it propoer justice. But hey, I’m definitely not complaining! More content is more content.👌🏽
it's not meant to be rating is the photo is pretty or visually appealing, the photos are meant to be documentary. clear, centered photos are ideal to document a species.
I wished my favorite Pokémon would be in this game. BN did animate the Pokémon rather cutely. It's frustratiting that apparently aside of Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander and Eevee every other starter is each time a gamble when anything Pokémon gets released. I understand that with all Pokémon outside the starters it is difficult but can't they at least use every starter Pokémon still? TPC sucks nowadays Guess I got to take photos of Totodile in Poképark Wii. XD
Kind of... unnoticeable. Not bad but it's mixed really quietly and is generally overridden by the game's sound effects. They went for atmospheric rather than catchy, which isn't my cup of tea if I'm honest.
It's not Catchy. It's not atmospheric. It's crap. More generic background noise than anything else. It's pretty sad how bad the music is compared to the n64 game. Not enough people are bothered by this. It's life replacing Halo CEs soundtrack with elevator music.
Probably the least good part. It's not bad, it's just not there. Tbh, I don't notice that much because the visuals are stunning, but the tracks don't have as much effort as the visuals for sure.
